Pondboy46 Posted April 3, 2012 Posted April 3, 2012 I was fishing for channel cats in one of the ponds and they werent biting at all. I put a smaller hook on and tryed little pieces of hotdog hoping it would work. It turns out in 1 hour I brought in 26 bluegill and a couple bass. Try this next time you're bluegill fishing it works great. Quote
preach4bass Posted April 3, 2012 Posted April 3, 2012 Chicken hotdogs are one of my favorite baits for any kind of freshwater fishing. If you let them sit out for a few days, the "skin" gets hard and they will stay on the hook longer. They are great for catfish! Quote
Hyrule Bass Posted April 3, 2012 Posted April 3, 2012 the bottomline is, bluegill are voracious feeders and will hit almost anything, even if they cant fit it in their mouth... Quote
scrutch Posted April 3, 2012 Posted April 3, 2012 A a kid I used to throw shiny gold hook into a school of bluegills and watch them hit it. No bait, just hook. They ARE voracious. Quote
Brand0n Posted April 4, 2012 Posted April 4, 2012 have caught some massive bluegill in my local lake on chicken livers...mostly because they are about to go on bed...they wanna fatten up before their spawn. they sure are good fried tho mmmm mmmm Quote
Hyrule Bass Posted April 4, 2012 Posted April 4, 2012 id love to get on some great bluegill fishing with some huge bluegills. its been quite a few years, where my friend took me to this pond that had amazing bluegill. we caught a bucket full in an hour. no clue how much any of them weighed, but they had huge humps on their heads. that pond also had some great bass fishing Quote
Super User bigbill Posted April 4, 2012 Super User Posted April 4, 2012 Hotdogs for bait only if they get passed me....kidding. I think that any sandwich meat will work since most of them are salted anyhoo. I like chicken livers wrapped in bacon and baked in the oven yummy..... Quote

Global Moderator Bluebasser86 Posted April 4, 2012 Global Moderator Posted April 4, 2012 A small hook with 1 or 2 kernals of corn works well also and stays on the hook a little better than hotdogs. If you get an inch long grub and rip the tail off it works just as well and is more durable than natural baits too. Quote
Mountain Angler Posted April 5, 2012 Posted April 5, 2012 Worm and i like small bits of meat of any kind but they eat everything Quote
