Pline Flouroclear And When To Re-Tie My Lures

So, two part question here.

This evening, around 7pm I decided to go up to the local lake and try some late evening fishing for about an hour. I was killing them, I had 5 in about 30 minutes in the 2-3 pound range. I was using a crawfish colored red eye shad and they couldn't resist it. I have had the same red eye shad tied on my line for about a week and used it on the last fishing trip. My father caught a easy 5-6 pounder on it and I caught a few smaller ones. I had no issues what so ever. I did however snag a underwater tree and almost drug the entire tree onto the bank before my lure popped free. This evening, just as I was calling it quits, I hooked up with what might have been the biggest bass I have caught out of that body of water I was fishing. ( Community pond/lake whatever you want to call it ) Probably would have been over 6 pounds. However, I am using 15 pound fluoroclear, and my line just popped. I couldn't tell if it popped at the knot, or popped a few feet up from the knot. I use a knot that Grisby recommends for fluorocarbon,

. Even though it isn't a true fluorocarbon line, i figured it couldn't hurt.

My first question would be.... how often to you guys re-tie your baits onto your line? Should I have taken bait off, trimmed some line, and re-tied it after snagging that tree? Perhaps it put too much stress on it which in turn caused it to break when I hooked that big fish a few days later. My second question would be, does anyone have any experience with pline fluorclear that has had any issues with it snapping or anything of that nature? I really like how the line performs on my bait casters but if it is a known issue I wouldn't risk it.

It could have just been bad luck, or completely my fault because I didn't think to re-tie my lure after putting all that stress on it. Anywho, thanks for your time and any help would be greatly appreciated! Thanks guys!

Have you backlashed that line before? Any line with fluoro in it is severely weakened after a bad backlash if it puts a kink in the line. That may have ben the problem.

You also didn't mention if you checked the line periodically for abrasion. That could have been a big factor. Every 100 casts or after every fish I run the line between my thumb and pointer finger to feel for any abrasion or nicks in the line. If so, I re-tie.

I also retie after every trip, no matter what. I just have a pet peev about it, I think the knot gets kinda stale after drying and being exposed to alot of sunlight

There's has been complaints about flouroclear popping off at the line, I myself included. In fact there's many on this site that don't like P-Line CX for that same reason

The knot got old or the line had a weak spot. I fish 20# floroclear using an ordinary clinch knot for offshore fish like sails and amberjack, no normal issues. A 6# fish on 15# line should never break and any knot should always hold, even with your drag on full max, which it shouldn't be anyway. If your line and knot are in good order you would be surprised on the size fish you can handle with 15# line.

When to retie: I retie after every big fish. I check the first few feet of the line after every other cast for abrasion; cut a few feet off an retie if needed. I retie after bad backlashes. I also retie if the knot doesn't look or feel right. And sometimes I retie just because I haven't retied in a while.

I check he line from the hook/jig/lure up a few feet often. If it's rough I retie. If mot rough I keep on fishing. If I am fishing in heavy cover water I check even more frequently.

fluorocarbon (especialy invisx) becomes brittle at the knot. I recommend retying atleast once per trip. Check your line alteast 2-4 feet up from the knot after every catch. Check for the slightest knick, fray, kink or whatever. If those things are present then retie. If not, then retie after you've caught 2 or 3 bass. It only takes 15 seconds to retie so do it.

x2 on this....also if you aren't careful when you tie the knot you can weaken up to 2 ft of the line...and I use to fish P-line CX and it was good for 2-6 trips then would break on dinks...I would personally change to a better line IMO
