What is your opinion of the best frog out there to use topwater. I am looking for the best action. Has anyone ever used Capt. Kens frog out of Florida?

Posted

both of my favorites are by snagproof, #1 is Ish's phat frog- cuz of the floating system (spros sink too much) and the perfect frog. I use a Spro pop frog when i want a different action. the spro works OK, the action is where i want it, but its stiff.

I really like the Deps Basarisky. You can pop it, or you can slow retreive it and it walks across the water leaving a nice wake. It sits nicely in the water - nose up at about 45 degrees with its butt underwater.

I had 2 of Capt Kens frogs and they work great. The hook up ratio is much better in my opinion. I lost both of them and they were like $30 a pop when I bought them. Its been a while since I had one but now they have a $10 version that I want to give a try when they frog bite starts this year.

Dep basarisky is a good one.

My personal favorite is the Transporter from paycheck baits. It's a popper/walking the dog bait. One of the more easier baits to walk the dog for me. I love the action it puts out. I have a lot of fun with this one.

I use Kopper's in heavy weeds and cover and Spros in more open areas. Both are excellent.

One of these days I'm gonna be able to grab one of those Deps Basarisky's.

I hardly ever miss a hook up on the Trophy Scum Frog. It's soft ad the back end sits down in the water.

Couldn't tell you how many fish I missed on Spros.

I have never heard this before....It could be a number of variables, but I doubt it's the frog.

booyah frogs are pretty good but doesnt make any flip flop type of noise but if u work it a lil it will do the job.. got mine at bass pro and there hollow btw.

compared to snag proof or scum frogs, spros aren't that soft, I feel i miss more bass on spros than other brands, especially the poppers, their butt is stiff which i don't like. Spros don't catch as much, but I dont catch big bass, for the most part it's only 1-2 pounders, with a 3 every month or two. I don't think the small bass hook up on frogs as well as larger fish.

I read about people missing fish, having poor hook up %, or this that and the other, kind of troubles with...insert frog brand here.... In all seriousness, what are you people doing?? Don't blame it on the frog, look in the mirror.

I have fished the Strike King KVD frog, the Spro, the Snag Proof Bobbys perfect frog, Scum frogs, the Manns super frog, the Sumo frog, the Tru Tungsten frog, and probably a few more I can't remember. I don't have hookup issues with any of them. If I do my part and don't jerk it away from a fish, and fish it on the right tackle, it's a bait , no matter what brand, that has one of the highest hookup %'s of any. Fish slap, swirl, and blow up on them all the time and miss them, thats just the nature of the game, not the frogs fault. Same thing with water getting inside the frog. I have never had one that was 100% completely sealed, but I have never had one sink, or take on water at an alarming rate either, and I have owned hundreds of them. A squeeze every couple casts is second nature, nothing too difficult about that. The reason I change frog brands have nothng to do with hook ups, some walk better, some fall apart faster, some cost too much, some don't cast as well as others, etc.... Snag Proof Bobbys Perfect frogs were my go to frog for a long time, till I got a one after another that fell apart right out of the package, or after only 1 or two fish. To Snag Proofs credit, they took care of me, but there replacements all fell apart just as fast. Thanks but no thanks. On to Spro. I used them for a few years, no real issues, had some that the paint peeled off faster than others, but they still caught fish, just localy they are about $10 a pop now, time for a cheaper option. Right now I am using the Strike King KVD frogs, about $3 cheaper than the Spros, walk better, skip under docks way better for some reason, are just as durable, and come in all the colors I need.

I have 2 of the KVD frogs and they both fill with water and sink.....not every few casts, that I could deal with; they sink after walking about 6 inches....total junk to me...the Koppers have been about the best for me, although it's been awhile since I had a good frog bite..

I'm pretty open minded when it comes to fishing, so this evening I'll leave the Trophy Scum Frogs at home and pack the Spros.

I've been fishing some sort of frog for more than half my life. My technique is sound. There just is a big difference between these two frogs.

Softness/Collapsibility aside, the biggest difference is the weight on the back of the TSF. Like I said, the back end sits down in the water. When a fish breaks the surface it already has half of the bait in it's mouth (the half with the hooks). With lighter and/or more evenly balanced frogs that sit flatter on the surface you'll get more "flying frogs" and misses. It's just what I've noticed after all these years. Personal experiences vary.

That is my opinion on everything SK...don't get me wrong, I do throw a few of their cranks, but only when I know pike or muskie are in the area.

Perfectly stated. It's pretty simple stuff. Get a 7'6" + H rod, 50 lb + braid, frog of choice, wait 2-3 seconds after strike, and set the hook as HARD as you can...

Spro 65, King Daddy and Popper are my favorites. The Scum Frog Popper, Mann's Super Frog and the New BooYah frog are also frogs I like to use from time to time, but the Spros are my first choice.

The tru tungsten frogs are pretty good, and I found them on sale for $4 at a popular fishing tackle site.

I love the Scum Frog.

It's very soft and doesn't take on any more water than the others.

I don't have to open up the hooks as much as I do a Spro
