Im looking to pick up my first pistol in the next few months. While doing my research I find myself going back to the P95 as far as being reliable and within my budget. Can anyone here comment on them? It would be for HD and range time.

Thanks.

Good to know thanks. They do seem very popular...

Another that caught my eye is the sig 2022 but that's just out of my price range.

I've had a P95 for years now. My favorite handgun. Very accurate and has never jammed. Like it better than my Springfield XD

Top left. The XD is bottom right

guns.jpg Rugers customer service is great. I damaged the Alaskan firing too large a round(350 grain, 260 is the max they recommend. Oops.). I paid shipping one way and they took care of the rest.

Just a quick question.....why the P95 rather than the SR9 or the SR9c? About the same price point. The SR9c comes with a 10 round magazine and a 17 round magazine as well. The 17 round magazine transforms the handgrip into full size while the 10 round keeps it compact. I am 6'2" with large hands and both fit comfortably into my hand.

As for Ruger service. I had an issue with one of the Cam block pins on my gun being loose. It came from the factory that way. They paid for shipping both ways and had it repaired in 3 weeks. Everything has run great. No fail to fire or fail to eject at all with this gun. My wife also owns the same gun and my father-in-law purchased the same gun around the same time. We all love them. Just another option.

The p95 is cheaper and has been around longer. It seems issues are more common with the SRs than anything in the P series... I could be wrong though..

Can you fire one? Maybe rent one at the range? IMO a real nice gun for the money.

I held a buddies P95 and liked the feel of it. I also played with the cousins Glock 26 and that was really comfortable in my hand.

I should be able to swing some extra cash and the Sig 2022 is on top of my list now

I've read on other forums that people have been replacing their p95 with these and not looking back. However no one has them in stock in my area. I may have to wait until the coming gun show in early May.

Lots of my police buddies carried the P90 Ruger.  Usually, those in departments that did not issue a duty weapon and the officers had to buy their own. And as we all know, the pay wasn't going to suggest we buy a Sig (I did) so they went with the best alternative.

It was known a "best bang for the buck" in the departments.  Reliable, and very accurate for a .45 auto.

I've shot a few and found they shoot well.  I also had to carry concealed and found the P95 a "blocky" pistol.....it didn't fit the contours of the body well.  It simply "dug in" in tender places.  Now, if you are not carrying it concealed, but in open holster, it was fine.  It was a dependable duty weapon.

For that particular weapon, it was mostly "economics" that got it the nod.  Some departments were getting them really cheap.

For some, it became a "car gun" that fit between the seats.....a Glock 23 also was a great "car gun."  When placed between the driver seat and the center console in a black nylon holster, the Glock was almost invisible to everyone, but readily accessable if someone walked up and put a gun to your face.

The P95 is a 9mm, not a .45

The .45 version is the P90.

You are absolutely right, Stasher!  Thanks for the catch!  Got the numbers mixed up.  I edited my post so as not to confuse anyone!

Most of what I said applies to BOTH pistols since the frame is about the same.  The P90 is what the guys carried.  They found it more accurate than the P95.

Both are very reliable.  Most of the departments in this area have moved from the 9mm to .40's and .45's.

it is indeed a 9mm. apparently its the last of the p series offered by ruger.

so far i have around 400 rounds of miscellaneous ammo through it and only had a few ftf's when i first went to the range. i figured it was me being a new shooter and limp wristing. i ended up buying a set of those hand grip strengthener things and that improved my grip dramatically. i have one in the house and leave one in the car for those times im stuck in traffic.

overall im very pleased with it and its been very accurate out of the box.

I bought one for my wife about 6-8 years ago. She has only fired it about a dozen times and I have only  fired about 50 rounds through it. Have not had any problems and it is surprisingly accurate at least to 25 yards as that is the max I have fired with this weapon. Good gun for the money.................Al
