Bass Dude Posted March 27, 2012 Posted March 27, 2012 I just curious if anyone on the forum owns a Steez rod and/or reel. Are they as great as they look??? For some reason I start drooling when I see them Quote
Super User SoFlaBassAddict Posted March 27, 2012 Super User Posted March 27, 2012 Try asking Steezy. He's got, oh, one or two. Quote
Super User Gone_Phishin Posted March 28, 2012 Super User Posted March 28, 2012 I own a Steez 100HLA, the 7'1" Compile-X, and the 6' casting rod. I feel the Steez line is not worth the MSRP, but that's just my opinion. Granted they are VERY nice, but overpriced. I purchased all of the above at discounted prices. The Compile-X now retails for $600, and that's absurd. While it is a very nice stick, it is not as sensitive as my Legend Elites, GLX, and NRX...and all of these sticks cost less than the Steez. If someone wants to spend six bills on a rod, IMHO custom is the only way to go. One could purchase a heck of a custom rod for $600. The reel is ridiculously refined, and a joy to cast. Is it worth $540? Not in my opinion. As I said, I purchased the above at discounted prices. I believe they are worth every penny that I paid for them, and am very happy with my purchases, but I would never pay retail. The 6'3" Steez is presently on my short list, but only if I find one at a very good used price. 1 Quote
Super User Hooligan Posted March 28, 2012 Super User Posted March 28, 2012 I have a couple of the rods; 7-1 Compile-X, and the 7-4 SVF. I'm fond enough of them that they've not made their way out of my arsenal. Quote
dmat Posted March 28, 2012 Posted March 28, 2012 I have a 2500 (NRX DSR822), 103HLA (NFC 665 HM) and 100HLA (Steez Flexlite) and just sold a JDM Exist 1003 The reels are the best I have ever used...just silky smooth. As another poster mentioned I don't know if I would pay full price for them. Two I got with giftcards and bought the other two used (like new.) The Flexlite is a really nice rod but it took a while for me to get used to the action...it is a bit different than the Loomis cranking series that I had fished for a long time. If I were going to buy another one it would be used off of one of the boards...you can get a pretty good price. Don Quote
bassinbrian Posted March 28, 2012 Posted March 28, 2012 I've got the 7'1" compile-x, 7' svf, 6'3" svf, 6'10" spx, 7' flexlite, 7'2" flexlite, 7'4" xbd and 2 steez 103's. Fantastic enthusiast level rods but the price increase(s) are also making me think going custom. Quote
jeb2 Posted March 28, 2012 Posted March 28, 2012 I have two Steez 103's, mounted on NRX's. They are okay reels, but really needed to be tuned before they became consistently useable. Before tuning, they'd get really upset by any changing of the wind speed and direction and have lots of backlashes. And I still have to adjust them more for that than any of my other reels. They do cast nicely though, especially with the upgraded bearings and polished spool ends, at least in ideal conditions. I have 100 spools for them as well, also tuned, and tend to prefer those overall. It's a shame a high end reel like that needs to be tuned, though. I will not be buying anymore of them. Just do not have the bang for the buck. My Core 50 with user installed upgraded bearings performs just as well, and is also on an NRX. Heck, my Premier's with stock bearings are smoother than the Steez's and come very close in performance to them. And are much easier to adjust. I was all hot about getting a Steez rod for a while. But read too many review's like Gone_Fishin's above and the Tackle Tour reviews of them to pull the trigger. Quote
riskkid 2 Posted March 28, 2012 Posted March 28, 2012 I have a Steez baitcaster, very nice but very expensive. At my level of expertise I really don't notice much difference from other nice but less expensive reels except for the weight. I won't be getting another one. Quote
Jason Penn Posted March 28, 2012 Posted March 28, 2012 i've had a few of the reels, and just sold off 3 of the rods. i do really miss the 7' mh svf & 7'1" comp x, but i didn't ever really get attached to the flexlites. the 7'1" comp x really was a special rod to me, and i will end up with 2 more of these when finances permit. i bought all of these rods used for a fair price, used them for a couple of years, and got most of my money back when selling. if i could purchase something used for $350 (random figure), use it for a couple of years, and still get $300, then it wasn't necessarily overpriced in my opinion. i don't think i would give $600 for a new one though. Pantera61 Posted March 29, 2012 Posted March 29, 2012 For what you would pay for a Steez you could get a Megabass or Evergreen rod, both much better in my experience. Quote
