I agree with "flippin and pitching"

I fish them all the time for smallies....I do well with them or a sexy shad type color on smallies

Dark/dirty water/cloudy day type conditions for largies

I am usually throwing Chart/Blue back instead (confidence thing), but you would throw firetiger in the same situations - dingier water and/or deep water (15-20 ft.)

Pike love the color. I usually only use them in muddy water on my lipless crankbaits and flat raps.

LOL, they are downright stupid for firetiger, especially in perch waters. I don't buy anything in FT anymore, and laugh, calling them pike food.

You don't need to be in perch water, we don't have any perch down here, and the pike (jackfish to us) will mug them. I use the firetiger color, but mostly in dirty water, or offshore with a ratltrap or deep diver. Never in the spring, in clear water, over shallow grass; you are just asking for it. I may just go against this advice this week, tho, my local lake holds some bigger pike (for us) in one area, and the state record is not huge (5.75lbs).

I don't ever use Firetiger... When Im in dirty water I fish colors like chartreuse black back, orange craw, or sometimes a red craw color. Nothing against it really, other than it is like prime rib to pike and I have no confidence in that color at all. I don't even have a single Firetiger bait in my tackle boxes.

But these are the same colors found on a Firetiger??

Traveler2586, you are correct, some of those colors are found on Firetiger. In my humble opinion, I think Firetiger needs to be renamed Pike Candy. I don't have an issue with anyone who uses firetiger and uses it with success. But I don't use it, I have no confidence in that color at all. I haven't caught a single bass on firetiger. I also haven't caught a single pike on Chart black back and orange craw. Michigan lakes are full of toothed creatures... I have strong confidence in colors that aren't pike candy.

LOL, I guess I've been lucky. I don't know that I've ever fished where there are pike. But, we have the Northern Snakehead; I don't know which would be worse, are pike slimy?

I don't think there is a single lake with in an hour of my house that doesn't have pike in them. They are everywhere! Yes, Pike are very slimy, and I think their slime stinks worse than most fish. Gets on the carpet of my boat and seems like it takes a whole fishing season to get rid of the smell.

stained and muddy waters

At dusk / before dawn in low light situations

When nothing else is working.......

Your "southern pike" (pickerel) are nothing like our northerns. Here's a dink:

(not caught on firetiger, but chartreuse and black Lucky Craft Flat Mini DR. No idea how I got it back, LMAO)

Y'all can keep those big, toothy jackfish! This time of year, they are a menace to us Southern folk who don't use steel leaders on our lures. They do put up one hell of a fight, though. I caught a big one a few years ago, and thought it would go 6 pounds. Then I took it out of the water and it weighed 3.5. No fish that long should only weigh 3.5.

Here is a decent sized Northern:

I actually know this guy's father and know the story behind this record fish. He had a smaller pike on the line and this huge one bit onto it. I am surprised he was able to land this beast.

Not to turn this into a pike thread, but the worst feeling in the world is when you are throwing a lucky craft plug and you get a nice THUNK, only to set the hook on nothing...Terrible feeling that we have to deal with every time we are on the water.

Try getting on a deep, suspending crankbait pattern, and feeding an entire 3600 box full of Slim Shad to the local pike population. Everytime I go by that spot, my wallet cries just a little bit.

J, I am sorry for your loss of slim shads...they will be missed.

that is when I get out my Matzuo baits ;)

What's funny is every time I did a certain thing, I'd catch a pike. Why I kept doing it is a mystery. I caught about 15 northerns that day, ranging from 8-12 lbs. It was fun, probably not worth all those baits, though.
