QUIENYO Posted March 26, 2012 Posted March 26, 2012 I'm confused about the rave reviews that everyone seems to have concerning the Yo-Zuri Hybrid and the Ultra Soft version. I went out and bought 600yds of 8lb test of the ultra soft and 600yds of 6lb test of the standard. I put it on two spinning reels that I had grown tired of having line memory issues with. Its been three months and am trying to give away the remaining +/- 800yds. I have never had more line pukes or memory issues with a spinning set up as I have with both types of Yo-Zuri. I thought after re-spooling both reels a few weeks ago that maybe I had fed the line in the wrong rotation from the Yo-Zuri spool. I re-spooled with the reverse rotation three weeks ago. No change. Each time I brought one of the spinning set-ups, I ended up cutting the line multiple times each outing. I'm done with Yo-Zuri. Has anyone else had these issues with a spinning set-up? Quote
Super User BASSclary Posted March 26, 2012 Super User Posted March 26, 2012 You answer is in the post. " I put it on two spinning reels that I had grown tired of having line memory issues with." Its the spinning reels, not the line. Put in on a different reel. Quote
kjud29 Posted March 26, 2012 Posted March 26, 2012 its not the spinning reels, i had the exact same problem. bought 8lb test and put it on my reel and the memory is awful. I constantly got tangled(and no this was not my fault). I never got birds nests with my spinning reels until i bought this line. Yo-Zuri should refund everyone who bought the line Quote
Wildbillb Posted March 26, 2012 Posted March 26, 2012 I use yo-zuri hybrid ultra almost exclusively on my spinning set ups. I love the stuff. I have been using it since it came out. Been using the original yo-zuri for almost 10 years now. I have never had a complaint. When the stuff first came out I was fishing at least 5 days a week for 2-3 hours each night after work. Never ran into a problem. Still have not. Just curious how full are you filling your spools? Are you putting your line on in the right direction? Quote
Super User roadwarrior Posted March 27, 2012 Super User Posted March 27, 2012 Hmm... Been working great for me for a decade or so... I do use KVD Line & Lure Conditioner, but never have any of the issues you have described. I suspect that you spooled it incorrectly. If you "troll" the line, you will cure all of your problems regardless of how it was spooled. Quote
QUIENYO Posted March 27, 2012 Author Posted March 27, 2012 From all the reviews I have read, this stuff is supposed to be like magic in spinning reels. That is why I bought the 6&8 lb test. If it had performed at even an acceptable level, I would have bought a heavier test for use in my casting reels. I mean the stuff is cheap. Help me out with the direction of spooling. The first time I spooled it I had the yo Zuri spool flat on the floor in front of me with a piece of plastic through the center and my feet applying even presure on both ends of the plastic. The line was feeding from the side closest to my chair. When I re-spooled, I turned the spool 180 and was feeding line from the side of the spool farthest from my chair. Please tell me I mucked it up and if I spool in some other fashion that this stuff will morph into the best line I've ever used. In all seriousness, the stuff is so cheap compared to braid that I would love to use it in everything. But I don't do well with equipment that causes more hassle that it's worth. Quote
A-Rob Posted March 27, 2012 Posted March 27, 2012 sounds like it just aint for you if you are sick of memory issue, try braid with a yo-zuri leader (you have lot of leader material with 800 yards haha) Quote
QUIENYO Posted March 27, 2012 Author Posted March 27, 2012 Im not a big fan of using leaders. I think I'll see if I can trade with a buddy who is a true believer for some soft plastics. I'm pretty frustrated with the product. I was hoping someone would tell me it was operator error and I could make a correction. Oh well. Quote
Super User Darren. Posted March 27, 2012 Super User Posted March 27, 2012 I echo A-Rob's advice. Go with braid for the mainline and tie on the Hybrid as leader material. No more memory issues as braid just works better on spinning gear. It's what I use on all my spinning gear. Been testing out the 8 lb Hybrid in green and have been pleasantly surprised. It works great as a leader. I use a modified albright knot mostly with plenty of wraps up and down the line. The stuff is seriously hard to break even at 8 lb test. Give braid a shot, you'll have a ton of leader material till kingdom come! Quote
Super User Darren. Posted March 27, 2012 Super User Posted March 27, 2012 Im not a big fan of using leaders. Why is that? Just curious. I was leery when I first started out, but once I gained confidence in tying braid to leader knots I've not looked back. I've only had knots fail when I screwed up. So I learned and practiced tying them till now I'm 100% confident they'll hold. I've pulled up some serious junk off the bottom when hung up without breaking -- not to mention some big fish. Quote

Oh well. road warrior believes it is user error by the sound of his post I fish straight braid for largies in stained or dirtier water so maybe you can skip the leader braid will get rid of all your line headaches tho....but I know guys that go straight mono/FC with no complaints either Quote

I broke off a couple times at the beginning when I was snap setting my hook sets. Once I got off the roids and did an appropriate hook set I had no issues and love the set up Quote
SDoolittle Posted March 27, 2012 Posted March 27, 2012 I'm not a fan of the stuff either. I haven't used it on a spinning reel, but I tried 12# Hybrid on a baitcaster, and I was not at all impressed. Even with a liberal dose of KVD Line & Lure, it was way too stiff and springy. There's no way I would want the stuff on a spinning reel. Maybe the Ultra Soft is better. I'll never know. Quote
QUIENYO Posted March 27, 2012 Author Posted March 27, 2012 I've got nothing against leaders. I've used flouro leaders in the past. I just feel like its more effort that it's worth. I'm not having too much trouble landing fish with strait braid, so I'm hesitant to change things up, especially when it over complicates my set up. I go with the double uni when i do use a leader, but that is a rare occasion. Quote

Sell your yo-zuri on ebay. Problem solved haha. I feel ya tho, I've definitely spent money on fishing gear that go thrown in "the box" in my basement. Quote
QUIENYO Posted March 27, 2012 Author Posted March 27, 2012 Roadwarrior, forgive my ignorance, what is trolling the line? Quote

If you want to experiment/practice, then do so. You can and will gain confidence trying other mainline to leader knots if you want to take the time. Otherwise join the club of those with BOXES of line-experimented-with-but-not-used. LOL. Quote
Super User Ratherbfishing Posted March 27, 2012 Super User Posted March 27, 2012 Hmmm, me thinks you got a different batch than I did. It's a little stiffer than Trilene XL but a lot stronger. I seldom have troubles with the spool I have. If you want to give yours away, PM me. : ) Quote
Super User Darren. Posted March 27, 2012 Super User Posted March 27, 2012 I believe Roadwarrior means letting line out behind your boat as you motor along. It helps get the twist out. If you're shore-bound, then tie off the line to a fence post, tree or such and walk off a good distance, give a nice stretch to the line -- not too hard -- and reel back in with constant tension on the line. Should help with the coils. Won't solve the issue, but should help. Quote
urp Posted March 27, 2012 Posted March 27, 2012 I think you missed roadwarrior's point about "trolling" your line. If you're not sure what that is, just remove all tackle and stream most of the line out behind the boat. That wil remove all kinks and coils no matter how you have spooled the reel. If you don't have a boat, find a stream and run the line down the rapids. Quote
SausageFingers Posted March 27, 2012 Posted March 27, 2012 I use Hybrid on all of my casting setups. I love the stuff. Quote
tmier Posted March 27, 2012 Posted March 27, 2012 I was going to buy some yozuri for my extra spinning spool. I wanted it for X-raps and other mid divers but now I'm thinking I should stick with a low test braid. Quote
lou304 Posted March 27, 2012 Posted March 27, 2012 I've been using the Ultra soft for a couple of years now and think its great. Just bought a 6lb spool last week for one of my Stradics. I'm kinda surprised no one brought this up, but its my experience that there are a lot of factors that contribute to line twist, few of which actually have to do with the line itself. did you spool it right? What types of baits are you using? Tubes, drop shotting, in-line spinners, spoons and other presentations are notorious for twisting line. Do you close your bail by hand or crank the handle to close it.That will cause some line twist. Just found this little piece on line: http://www.bishfish.co.nz/tips/linetwist.htm This might give you some insight. Quote
flippin and pitchin Posted March 27, 2012 Posted March 27, 2012 I have been using Yo Zuri 6 through 20 on spinning and baitcast for over two years. The 20 is somewhat stiff but not bad at all. The 6 and 8 on my spinning reels has been outstanding. I have experienced zero twist or coiling issues that is caused by the line. I fished a whole season with the same line on my tube rod. No issues. I can't explain why you have problems. I don't need a refund. I'm more than satisfied. My reels are Shimano Saros 3000 if that's a help. I always close the bail mannually. 1 Quote
dave Posted March 27, 2012 Posted March 27, 2012 6# ultra soft doing just fine. 12# and 15# on baitcasters doing just fine. Quote
