I am loosing lures on tree stumps from shore. I just caught a nice lunker and the next day out i thow the trap in the same area and snag on a stump loosing the bait. I have lost probably 7-8 this year on similar situations. Any help on getting a lure back from shore short of swimming out to it. (which i almost did had i not had to go somewhere right after fishing)

Nope.

I don't throw lures except topwater, buzzbaits and spinnerbaits.

I still lose a spinnerbait every now and then. My advice is to fish

stuff you expect to lose: soft plastics and jigs.

How are you "trying" to get the lures back right now? A lot of times if you use the bow and arrow method ( I believe that's what it's called) you can usually pop it loose. To do this just reel in most of the slack...leave just a little...and take the line in your hand where it comes off the spool to the first guide loop and pull it until the line is tight and kinda pop the line. Hope that didn't confuse you too much. I would be able to show you better than type it. Somebody on here can probably word this better than me. I've also had luck holding my rod tip really high with a little bit of slack in the line and violently shaking. Just don't give up and most of the time it comes loose. But as some would say...you aren't fishing the lure right if it doesn't get snagged and if you don't lose some now and then. Good luck man!

I find once the hooks are set into hood, the bowstring method usually fails. Use strong co polymer line, like 10 or 12# CXX opr Yo-Zuri hybrid and 2x treble hooks. You should be able to straighten the hooks on a straight pull without breaking the line. Don't use the rod to pull the bait free, though.  Don't worry about losing fish with the light trebles, unless you fishing for double digit bass. Honestly though, a half dozen lost baits in a year isn't really that bad.

I agree.....I lose that in one outing sometimes. If you are fishing from shore, bait knockers don't really work either.

I fish river systems with heavy current...so going swimming for it is not an option.I can't even swim anyways.

J Francho, what 2X treble hooks do you use?

I lost 6 Fat Free Shads and SK Series 5 and 6 in one outing this spring deep cranking from the shore in the exact same spot.  I kept throwing there and do you know why, when I would hit the stump without hanging every 10 min or so... BAM fish on and some nice ones that day at that.

I made me a "winch handle" out of a piece of 3/4 oak dowel that is 8"long.

When I get caught, I will wrap my line around it 5 or 6 times. Pull like the devil and I can usually get my lure back. This along with 50lb Power Pro, I'll either straighten the hook or something is coming to the bank.

I tie a modified cinch knot also. Instead of going through the eye once, loop it through 4 times. Now, there is 4 times the amount of line holding the knot to the lure. It also keeps the knot from slipping. Since I've been using these, I can't remember loosing anything.

Losing tackle is part of fishing, best thing is to go weedless. Bow and arrow method has about a 10% recovery rate if you are lucky. What works best for me is once I feel that I'm hooked.......STOP !!!, you don't want to wedge the hook in any further, especially if it's rocks or coral reef. I release my bail or free spool in a conventional ( you want no tension on the tip, I have snapped 3 that way) and take the loose line and just jiggle it or a firm tug till it comes loose. My recovery rate is good.

I use a weedless spoon quite a bit and they don't hang up too bad.

Stinger 36 or 41. VMC Inline Round. I guess they are actually 1x hooks, but you get the picture. No need for the 4x, 6x monsters with most bass situations. I mean think about it...I caught my season's best smallmouth, a 5-0, on a #6 Gamakatsu Drop shot/SS hook.

Haha I can't help the short of swimming part cause I will jump in during the summer to get one back at my pond.

My buddy snuck a video of me climbing a tree when i went squirrel fish last year.  The tree broke and it sent me and the limb in to the lake. lol It made for a great video when I got back home but I got that lure back.

I would never fish anythign expensive from shore, and I don't fish anything I'm not willing to lose.  majority of the time that means plastics, and maybe spinnerbaits.  But I don't throw 8 dollar crankbaits  or anything equally or more expensive from shore, because I know in my lake i'm almost guaranteed to get hung up and lose them.  May as well just walk down to the water, dump my wallet, and go home lol.

I have lost at least 3 spinnerbaits, and some plastics from shore. I do have those expensive lures, but I will only put it on when I get to fish from a boat.

I think you stand almost as good a chance as losing a bait from boat as you do from shore, especially if it gets hung deep in wood.  Stronger line, lighter hooks, and a few of the other suggestions will reduce loss.  To tell you the truth, it burns me more when I lose a worm weight, hook, and worm, LOL.  I lose more of those than any crank, and I do a lot of cranking.  I also think if you aren't losing a few cranks, you aren't being aggressive enough with them.  If I had avoided throwing a creank from shore, I'd have never caught the fish below, and many, many others.  And yes, that is a $20 Duo Slaver crankbait from Japan.

They make split rings that are supposed to open up when hung, but not on fish. How that works, I have no idea, but at least you'll only lose the trebles and not the whole bait.

Actually, I dont have any luck with cranks. And I am sure it is because I dont know how to fish them...haha! But I will lost few plastics here and there.

Cabela's has the split rings daviscw referenced above.

Slow steady pressure causes the split ring to open. Hard jerks, like from fish, has no effect. Never used them but the theory looks good. Pricey, especially if you were replacing the rings on all your lures.

My suggestion is braid.  Strong enough to bend a hook or work it free.    I've pulled in some large branches with it too.  I think since I switched to braid I"m in the plus column on lures as I've pulled in some branches with 3 or 4 lures on them.   Obviously not perfect for clear water, but fine in most other situations.
