Dr Pigg Posted September 29, 2009 Posted September 29, 2009 Got to be some novel idea to save hung up cranks! DD22's through tree tops and stumps? I've read about "popping the line like a bow & arrow? don't get it! Sliding a spark plug with chain attached down the line to hang the trebles--anybody tried this? :'( Quote
angler1 Posted September 29, 2009 Posted September 29, 2009 Try cutting off the hook/bend on the hook that faces forward on both sets of trebles. Doing this will lead to less hang up. I can tell you from experience. After cutting off the hooks simulate how they will swim throught the water, they will tuck toward the belly of the bait. No, you won't lose any fish either without the extra hooks. Quote
Infidel. Posted September 29, 2009 Posted September 29, 2009 http://www.***.com/descpage-JBHDLR.html This has saved me hundreds of dollars. Quote
Super User flechero Posted September 29, 2009 Super User Posted September 29, 2009 http://www.***.com/descpage-JBHDLR.html This has saved me hundreds of dollars. I have less luck with the knockers but do carry them in the boat. I mostly use a telescopic rod like this: http://www.basspro.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/Product_10151_-1_10001_37104____?ordProd=Y&CMID=TOP_selectitems#itemDetail it's 18' long when opened all the way out and lives in my rod box. (collapsed it's only 6' or so.) Quote
Super User roadwarrior Posted September 29, 2009 Super User Posted September 29, 2009 Well, a "pocket rocket" works about 95% of the time and it's almost free! Attach a large paper clip to a 3 oz sinker. 8-) Quote
Stringjam Posted September 29, 2009 Posted September 29, 2009 Get a telescoping pole. If you throw in a lot of woody areas, the sliding knockers are not always going to work well. I've literally ripped hooks off of baits before with the pole - but I get my bait back. There's no substitute for being able to physically manipulate the hung crank or even the object it's hung in. Super User Grey Wolf Posted September 29, 2009 Super User Posted September 29, 2009 Telescoping rod. Quote
Shad_Master Posted September 29, 2009 Posted September 29, 2009 As for the telescoping rod - try looking in the golf department of Wal-Mart - you can pick up a golf ball retriever for about $10 that will telescope out to about 20' - just slice the round plastic head and slide your line through it - works great and fits right in the rod locker. For what it's worth, the golf ball retrievers I have seen are pretty flimsy. The lure poles are very rigid. Quote
Mottfia Posted September 30, 2009 Posted September 30, 2009 i use the exact same slip knocker that infidel does with tons of success. It sometimes takes a few drops before I can get it loose but it work more than 90 % of the time. The first thing I always do it give it the bow and arrow. You'd have to watch someone to get it right or have it make sense. Then I get to the other side of the log or whatever you are hung on and pull from that side. The change in direction can pull it free. after that the knocker comes out. If I still can't get it free, then it was a crappy crank anyways and I don't want it. :'( You're gonna loss a few here and there but those techniques really help Mottfia Quote
LooksLikeSinbad Posted September 30, 2009 Posted September 30, 2009 I bought a lure retriever last year and haven't hung up a crankbait since! Murphy's law at work. Quote

I do the same thing but I use a snap swivel instead. I also use a round cannonball type sinker. They work awesome for this and for stuck jigs. Small enough to keep in your pocket when you're out fishing for quick access. Quote
Super User iceintheveins Posted October 1, 2009 Super User Posted October 1, 2009 I use the telescopic lure retriever from bass pro shops that's 18' long. If you can reach the bait with it you WILL get it back. The hounddog type retriever with the heavy weight doesn't work as well but it can go deeper than the 18' pole and can get some baits back. kikstand454 Posted October 1, 2009 Posted October 1, 2009 ive been thinking about the telescoping rod but i will say that the ol houndog probably works 80% of the time. Quote
bassfanatick Posted October 22, 2009 Posted October 22, 2009 Hi guys, I just placed an order with this company : http://www.mygogetit.com/ . I ordered the 15ft version that folds down to about 3ft. They have it on sale for like 13 bucks. I fish from the bank most of the time and am tired of loosing quite a few lucky craft lures. I hope it will work and will update once I get it. Quote
urp Posted October 23, 2009 Posted October 23, 2009 In addition to the retrieval methods mentioned you might try this to avoid hanging in first place: the first second you feel your lure make contact stop you retrieve for two seconds. This will not only reduce your chances of a hang-up but can often trigger a strike. Quote
SPAZ Posted October 23, 2009 Posted October 23, 2009 http://www.***.com/descpage-JBHDLR.html This has saved me hundreds of dollars. I tried this but I don't believe it works from shore since I wasn't able to get my crankbaits back. It probably works from a boat. Quote

Al Wolbach Posted October 23, 2009 Posted October 23, 2009 Those pole type are great until the wind blows. Trying to hold a fishing rod, extend/operate a 20ft pole, while positioning the boat in a 20mph wind. Well give me the paper clip and 3oz sinker..............Al Quote
