Super User SirSnookalot Posted March 24, 2012 Super User Posted March 24, 2012 My buddy Bassn Blvd knows where I fish, and redfish are rare here. Caught my 2nd one in 7 years fishing this area, boy was I amazed. Tossed a bomber in the ICW near some mangroves, not unusual to catch snook there, got hit on my first cast so it was nothing special I was doing (just luck), as soon as I got the strike I knew exactly what it was, the fight is different. Get it to the surface and saw that big ole head and spot on the tail and I was a happy camper. Quote
Super User Goose52 Posted March 24, 2012 Super User Posted March 24, 2012 Variety is the spice of life! You get to catch a lot of great fish down there! Quote
Super User SirSnookalot Posted March 25, 2012 Author Super User Posted March 25, 2012 If it weren't for my daughter and gr kids I wouldn't live here. My area by far is not the best of fishing locations here in Florida, both for fresh and saltwater. Better areas are not too far away, when I can get my wife up early and drive to the keys, she reads on the beach and I do some bonefishing, have a nice late lunch someplace and drive home, makes for a great day. WHYoWHY Posted March 25, 2012 Posted March 25, 2012 Yeah, Redfish are very rare in our area, I assume you are in S.Palm Beach County. I get them on the Juno Pier in August and Sept. like 1 or 2 of them a year. Usually right at or barely above kepper size 18". Neat to see them here. Quote
Super User Bassn Blvd Posted March 25, 2012 Super User Posted March 25, 2012 Nice catch, Stu. Iv'e only caught one red in Palm Beach and that was in the ICW about a mile north of the Okeechobee bridge. Believe it or not, but speckled sea trout used to be caught here in PB too. Most of our ICW has lost it's grass and mangroves. Hopefully, with the restoration projects going on, we'll see a return of reds and perhaps trout. Quote
Super User SirSnookalot Posted March 26, 2012 Author Super User Posted March 26, 2012 Doug, as I understand it Beer Can Island ( Bird Island ) by the inlet has reds, snook, tarpon and bonefish. No way to fish it from shore unless you wade to the island on low tide, but you might get thrown in the clink for that. I never fished it by boat but would like to, we always just head out the inlet and fish offshore. I also hear Snook Island has redfish, never caught one there but many many snook and some big jacks. The new fishing deck is going to be great when the bait starts rolling in, you can cast out to the catwalks, a bait fishermen"s dream for huge snook, bring a pier net. All that said I'll give ya my private spot when I see you in person, I don't need every yahoo throwing a cast net, I'll wind up getting thrown out. Quote
Super User Bassn Blvd Posted March 26, 2012 Super User Posted March 26, 2012 Yea, Beer Can Island has always been good for the species you mentioned, so I hear anyway. My brother fishes the island from a jon boat every now and again for bone fish but ends up catching an assortment of tarpon, snapper and shark. I think I may have mentioned this to you a while ago, but my brother was catching bone fish near the Lake Worth inlet too. I forget exactly where but can find out if you want to know. I haven't been out to the new docks yet but hear they're nice. I'm sure you and I will meet out there soon. I look forward to catching some snook on light tackle this year. Quote
Super User SirSnookalot Posted March 26, 2012 Author Super User Posted March 26, 2012 Lake Worth inlet? If you mean the Palm Beach inlet, I've fished the north side, it can be a good fishing beach, that's Singer Island. South of the inlet is only fishable by boat and it's a great snookery right off the rocks, Rush Limbaugh lives a few houses south of the inlet, it has no public access that I'm aware of. Quote
Super User Bassn Blvd Posted March 27, 2012 Super User Posted March 27, 2012 Yes, Palm Beach inlet. But its real name is Lake Worth inlet.I can show you where some BIG tarpon hang out on the south side but you need a boat. Quote
piscicidal Posted March 28, 2012 Posted March 28, 2012 Nice...I caught a keeper redfish on a trip to Fort Pierce inlet Saturday with my brother (down visiting from Minnesota). We came really close to getting the Florida "Super Slam"...we caught redfish/trout. I broke off about a 32" snook, which I had on for a good 2-3 minutes before he finally got into the mangroves and cut my line. And my brother jumped about a 150lb tarpon...he was about six wraps from being completely spooled before the hook finally gave out. Quote
