telmomarques Posted March 23, 2012 Posted March 23, 2012 i am looking for a cranking stick, i have narrowed my choices to dobyns but which kind should i get, graphite cranking or glass or randy mcabee 7'6" cranking i plan to use spinnerbait, shallow runner, med runner, Quote
Super User Chris at Tech Posted March 23, 2012 Super User Posted March 23, 2012 I don't throw spinnerbaits and cranks on the same stick so I use a Dobyns graphite 705CB for shallow and med cranks. I hear lots of folks that like the 705 Glass for exactly what you mentioned, but I don't have any experience with the glass model. Quote

Super User smalljaw67 Posted March 23, 2012 Super User Posted March 23, 2012 I know a lot like glass but I just can't get past the weight, especially if you're working a jig or a worm and something happens and the bite turns on and you pull off the bank and pick up that cranking rod. If you don't think it sounds like a big deal fish a good graphite rod for 1 hour and then pick up a good glass rod, the difference on paper doesn't seem like much but when you get use to that light weight rod the glass will feel like 10 pounds. Do the same thing only fish with the glass rod and then pick up the graphite and see how accurrate your cast are. I tell you this as I was looking for a cranking stick and my friend swears by glass so I went out to see how well this glass rod was and it did the job, the fish stayed hooked up and it was pretty good until I picked up my graphite worm rod, my first 3 casts sailed about 20 feet past my target, the worm rod felt like it weighed only an ounce so that was it for me with glass, just too plain heavy. Super User Hooligan Posted March 24, 2012 Super User Posted March 24, 2012 The 705 glass is a great rod, as is the 705. Both rods will do what you're asking with no issue. The 705CB is a super rod for rattle baits and deep jerkbaits, too. The RM rod wouldn't be what you want for anything other than the deep cranks and big squarebills, imo. Quote
flippin and pitchin Posted March 24, 2012 Posted March 24, 2012 The Champion 705CB Glass will easily handle the duties you mentioned. This is a composite rod with graphite butt section and glass integrated in the tip section so it is very powerful but forgiving at the same time. The blank diameter is smaller than an all glass rod and significantly lighter. I highly suggest this model. Quote
