I'm fishing in an 8 acre pond that is only 12 feet deep at the deepest part. My bama rig seems to go to the bottom when reeling it in at a normal speed. I'm looking for ways to reduce the overall weight.

I'm currently using...

Manns Alabama Rig

Yum Umbrella Assesory kit

http://www.basspro.com/YUM®-YUMbrella™-Accessory-Kit/product/12020405010914/386180

How would going weightless on the outside of the rig affect the presentation?

What other ways could I reduce the overall weight? Thanks! :)

Use a spreader with a resin head, like Picasso School-e or Yumbrella. Stick to 1/8 oz. or smaller jig heads - Buckeye makes a good one, but the wire hook is pretty big. Some snaps don't fit them, but the Yum rig does. Also, look at lighter baits, like Keitech Swing Impact.

I fish the 'bama rig in a lot of shallow florida ponds and lakes. Go weightless. Try a 3" or 5" single tail grub on a 2/0 offset roundbend worm hook.

Try trading out the hooks in the kit for unweighted hooks. The wire and everything else is heavy enough to stay down in the water. I might be wrong but that should have nothing to do with the action of the swimbaits.

Leaving the wisdom of using one in said circumstance out of the equation, use plain hooks on the outer baits and a 1/8 on the center bait. If you need it shallower (see opening statement) throw it on 30 lb mono.

The Rig is THE BOMB!

However, you still have to find the fish. When you do, hold on and brace yourself, this is no sissy bite!

I'm still experimenting with a variety of presentations, but the #1 aspect is flash in the middle. Some are

just using a bigger bait, but I like a blade. I'm rigging small LFT Live Magic Shad weightless on the outer

arms, Johnson Silver Minnow in the middle. I would estimate the total weight to be just an ounce or so.

What size Johnson Silver Minnow are you using?

Kent, I apologize if you've answered this question in another thread, but what hooks are you using on the LFT Magic Shad?

Do you use a weighted swimbait hook? How do you keep them from helicoptering? Thanks!

Outside hooks: #4/0 Gamakatsu Offset Worm Hooks (light wire)

The baits do not "helicopter". I guess the lead weight on The Rig

is heavy enough to keep this from happening, but I'm not sure. It

has never been an issue.

hmmmmm. I don't have any lead weights on my rig if I go weightless.

Seems like with normal swimbaits if there is any curve to them at all they will helicopter on me. Maybe the Magic Shad are different.

Thanks for your help!

It's not just the LFT Live Magic Shad, I haven't had any problems using RI Skinny Dippers,

Hollow Belly or Shadalicious. In the middle I have also experimented with a larger Magic

Shad, Keitech Swim Impact Fat and flutter spoon. No issues with any of these.
