SGT Rico Posted March 20, 2012 Posted March 20, 2012 I am a little confused, I have been testing 17lb Vicious Fluorocarbon tied to my braid leader, and it keeps breaking at the knot. The line is breaking consistently at 10-13lb mark. My method is crude, but fairly accurate when I've tested other lines. Knots I've tied include: uni-knot, palomar, trilene knot, and the double uni knot. I tested my go to line, Yozuri Hybrid in 15lb which I throw jigs, big worms, and carolina rigs on this line, and it broke at way above the rated weight. So I guess my question is, if the line states 17lbs, shouldn't break around that number? I've read reviews on Vicious Fluorocarbon and its like everything else, some people love the stuff, and other hate it. What's ya'll opinion? What you guys think of Vicious Fluorocarbon? I am only going to throw jigs, and big worms on this set up. I've had great success with Yozuri line, I just want to see whats all the fuss about fluorocarbon. If you guys have better knots in mind, let me know what they are. Thanks Quote
Zoff Posted March 20, 2012 Posted March 20, 2012 The is always a degradation of strength at the knot for some reason. http://www.tackletour.com/reviewfluorocarbontestpg6.html 1 Quote
Packard Posted March 20, 2012 Posted March 20, 2012 I tend to look at the line diameter instead of the break strength. Your 17lb vicious has a thinner diameter than your 15lb yo-zuri. 10-13lb breakage really isn't that bad for a leader. If you don't already do this, wet your line before clinching your knot. Check out this knot from Aaron Martens, . It is great for tying leaders. Quote

WookieeJedi Posted March 20, 2012 Posted March 20, 2012 The tackletour link was really helpful, I was going to get some vanish line with my next Cabela's order. Looks like I will be going with seaguar instead. Previously, the only fc line I had bought was p-line. I always loosen the drag a little with fc, but some of those knot strengths were terrible, and my p-line didn't fare so well in their tests. I have some of their fc coated mono that is really strong line, and almost as invisible as straight fc, you just give up on the sensitivity. Y'all just saved me a little $, thanks! Quote
Jim_M Posted March 20, 2012 Posted March 20, 2012 Honestly the more I fish with fluoro the more I dislike it. From the low end to high end stuff, whatever it takes to roll with this stuff, I ain't got it. Really good for leaders though. Quote
BradH Posted March 20, 2012 Posted March 20, 2012 I'm doing the same thing with 15lb Vicious fluoro and I have not had any knot issues with a back to back uni tied to braid. I had really bad issues with the Berkley stuff with knots breaking. I got to where I could make it work going super slow and using lots of spit but once I tried the Vicious I tossed the Berkley. I've got some Cabela's house brand 17 pound fluoro (seaguar?) and I have had zero issues with it also. I bought a big roll of the Cabela's stuff about 5 years ago. In the Berkley's defence I never did loose a fish to it due to bite offs or knot failures, I just find it easier to get a good leader to braid union with other brands. I still use spit and cinch the knot down really slow. Quote
Super User roadwarrior Posted March 20, 2012 Super User Posted March 20, 2012 Try fluorocarbon from our new sponsor, Seaguar. For spinning tackle, InvizX #8 For baitcasting, AbrazX Quote
