Super User slonezp Posted March 17, 2012 Super User Posted March 17, 2012 How would I value a used gun to sell or trade in? It's a slightly used Springfiedl XD .40 I'm waiting for the new XDS to be available, and If I like it I will be parting with the XD. I have attempted to trade in guns in the past but was never happy with the offers. How do gun dealers arrive at what they offer for trade ins? IL law states I have to keep records of a private sale for 10 years which seems like another can of worms I don't want to get into , so trading it in or keeping it would probably be the way to go.. Jim_M Posted March 18, 2012 Posted March 18, 2012 This might help. http://www.gunbroker.com/Firearms/BI.aspx?Keywords=XD+40 As far as dealers go you are lucky to get 50% of the guns retail value. Most states make dealers hold trade in's until the public safety (LE) folks check the guns paper trail, etc. That time eats profits so... The ONE consolation of trading it in to a dealer is THEY have to deal with all that legal crap. Valuable? Yes, but is it worth such a big chunk of change? Most likely not. I might post a "For Sale" sign including a picture at your gun club if they allow it. Best to sell it to someone you know or are familiar with. Just keep good transaction records. Quote
Super User clayton86 Posted March 18, 2012 Super User Posted March 18, 2012 When ever iv taken guns in they have a book they refrence kinda like kbb.com for cars iv never taken new guns it's always older guns I regretted selling but was in a pinch I usually see what the dealer offers and then go to gun shows and sell it. The shop I usually deal with is always up front with me they give me a trade price ten what theg ask for it then what they think it would go for on gunbroker/auction. Quote
Super User slonezp Posted March 18, 2012 Author Super User Posted March 18, 2012 50% of value? I'll probably end up keeping it. Can never have too many guns right? Quote
Jim_M Posted March 18, 2012 Posted March 18, 2012 50% of value? I'll probably end up keeping it. Can never have too many guns right? Yep, a gun you can sell for ~$499 will "normally" command 250-300$ as a dealer trade in. Of course there are exceptions. But the polymer handguns like the Glock's, XD's and M&P's are plentiful and in low demand "most places". So yes, keep it shoot it and wear it out! Quote
Super User bigbill Posted April 5, 2012 Super User Posted April 5, 2012 Example; A while back my dealer had a used CZ85DB pistol in 9mm luger for $300 in excellent condition. These were listed new for around $600 at the time. Now it seems the used ones are much higher than 50% the cost of new, there more like 60% to 70% price wise depending on what it is and the condition. Lets say it costs new at $1,000 the used priced was the norm of $500 now there more like $650 to $750. There are no great buys on the used stuff anymore like there once was. Quote
Super User Raider Nation Fisher Posted April 5, 2012 Super User Posted April 5, 2012 Gun show or private sell are your best bet to maximize your resell value. It cuts out the middle man and thusly nets you more cash. The nicer the condition of said gun the higher the resale. Quote
