Bigbarge50 Posted March 16, 2012 Posted March 16, 2012 This might seem a little silly, especially for a guy who used to flip a lot......... So I have been trying to pitch and flip more than I have in the last few years and not doing as well as I should and am curious if you guys set you cast/spool control very differently then you do when normally cast? What about your magnetic brakes? I just seem to be either way too tight and the lure seems to "hang up" on the flip or it backlashes a little...... I also am trying to use some lighter tackle (like a 3/8 jig at the heaviest) the last month because of colder water and trying to present a smaller profile for the fish. So anyone want to share what they do and thoughts? I have watched the flipping video on here a few times..... and will be the first to admit I need to make some time to practice getting back into flipping in the backyard or basement..... that no good work always getting in the way. Flipping simply has not been like riding a bike to me. Quote
Super User ww2farmer Posted March 16, 2012 Super User Posted March 16, 2012 Flipping.............I don't care, the line is in between my fingers, I only engage the reel to pull out more line. Pitching and or skipping, 2 brakes on, spool loose. Quote
Super User K_Mac Posted March 16, 2012 Super User Posted March 16, 2012 As ww2farmer said, if you're flipping it really doesn't matter much. I pitch with BPS PQ reels with dual braking, and usually use no centrifugal brakes and have the spool fairly loose. I may add a little mag braking, but have found that I have better accuracy with less brakes; it will cause you to pay attention though... Stick with the 3/8 oz jig until you get comfortable, then you can start to lighten up. Pitching, esp when using a lighter baits, is a presentation that requires practice and attention to detail. I fish with a guy that makes it look easy. Watching him has made me much better. Try some different lines and diameters also. 12# CXX is what I prefer if I can get away with it. Really nasty stuff may require a little heavier. Good luck. Quote
Bigbarge50 Posted March 17, 2012 Author Posted March 17, 2012 Thanks guys. I fish alone, have for the least few years (trying to get some partners now) so hence I need the feedback, because like you pointed out, having someone else on the other end of the boat sure helps. I also have thought because I was a decent enough pitching years ago I would be right back and my patience is not there right now. You know how it is, you really want to be good and think you are where you were, and that is simply not the case. I have a new BPS PQ now myself, was using an older shimano as my pitching/flipping reel, but maybe I will switchthe PQ over to that set up. Have a bunch of different diameters of spiderwire, BPS Floro, and some Yozuri Hybrid...... so will test those out. Good suggestions. Quote
