Jaheff Posted March 15, 2012 Posted March 15, 2012 I got my 50e a few weeks ago. (yes, late to the party cause I wasn't convinced on the IPT.) I also ordered the tune up kit from BGF and put it in before the second time I used it.I'm just wondering how many brakes you guy's are having to put on. I seem to have to switch between 3 and 4. My E7 i can leave 2 pins on, and use any lure weight i want. The 50 seems finicky, or is it just me? Quote
baluga Posted March 15, 2012 Posted March 15, 2012 The stock 50e works great as is. I set my breaks to 2 and cast 1/4 oz lure quite a good distance. A lot better than the 200e. Quote
Super User LgMouthGambler Posted March 16, 2012 Super User Posted March 16, 2012 Just 2 for me as well. Quote
Super User BASSclary Posted March 16, 2012 Super User Posted March 16, 2012 After a nice clean and flush/relube of the bearings I find that 2 is still the perfect amount. I usually throw a rage craw with a 1/8 ounce tungsten weight though with 8# Yo-Zuri. Line plays a big factor in castability as well. Quote
Super User new2BC4bass Posted March 16, 2012 Super User Posted March 16, 2012 I only use 2 on mine x2. Was throwing a 3/16 oz. spinnerbait the only 2 times I've had it out. No problems whatsoever. DVT did clean it before I used it. I was surprised at how far it will launch that 3/16 oz. spinnerbait. Of course some of it is putting it on the right rod. What is the tune up kit from BGF? Never heard of it. I'll try searching for it, but..... EDIT: I'm using 8 lb. mono. Quote

Super User Hi Salenity Posted March 16, 2012 Super User Posted March 16, 2012 I upgraded the bearings to Boca's over the winter on 4 reels = Core50, 50e, 2005e & TP. Out of the 4 I've only used 1 of the tuned reels the 2005e. I think the bearings freed it up enough I'm using more breaks (3) hopefully once I get used to it I can back it down to 1-2 and actually take more advantage of the upgrades. Btw I normally only had 1 break set on my 50es but set 3-4 on my Core50. I also have the spool set loose enough it has a bit of play side to side. Quote
dcorp Posted March 16, 2012 Posted March 16, 2012 Ok I don't want to hijack your thread but maybe we have similar problems. I have four 51's. Two curado and two chronarch. I have 2 pins pulled out on all of them except one of my curados that seems to be really fussy casting anything under 1/2 oz or so. At times I have all pins pulled, that's the only way I can get it from not birds nesting. It's only about 6 months old and acted that way out of the box. What do you guys think is going on? What can I try to do to fix it? Quote

dcorp Posted March 16, 2012 Posted March 16, 2012 Hmmm, I can't believe I didn't think about that. I'm more of a braid guy and have braid on my other reels. The one giving me problems has sufix seige on it. That must be what it is, I guess I am just used to casting braid??? Quote

It would make everything seem like they are set the same? Different line (braid to mono) would be the most simple. And simple is usually the best solution. Quote

I haven't had any feedback about being unmanageable. You can always use lube viscosity and amount to fine tune spool performance in addition to the braking. It may take some trial and error to get it exactly right. Check with me in the future, I could have saved you a few bucks on the upgrade parts. Quote

Michael DiNardo Posted March 18, 2012 Posted March 18, 2012 I don't know to be truthful. I guess I am thinking it to be the same as when toleramces between two moving parts are to0 large. There would be excess movement causing the spool to wear incorrectly or something along those lines. I don't know that is why I was asking. Mike Quote
Delaware Valley Tackle Posted March 19, 2012 Posted March 19, 2012 Too much play will make the reel noisy and probably not cast its best, but I don't see it doing any harm. On the other side, just barely adjusting the side play out probably does'nt restrict free-spool enough to restrict casting. Which ever way your own experience suggests will be fine. Quote
