tbirds00 Posted March 15, 2012 Posted March 15, 2012 For the people that use this rig, do you use it with a baitcaster or a spinning reel? Also how shallow can you go with this rig? Most of time when I see it on tv there fishing it very deep but was wondering if it would be effective in shallower water such as 10-12 feet or below that. Also for those that use this rig, how often do you use it? Is it just a seasonal rig or is it effective throughout the year. Quote

WookieeJedi Posted March 16, 2012 Posted March 16, 2012 I use spinning gear with flouro-coated 8lb (or less) mono. Quote
Dave P Posted March 16, 2012 Posted March 16, 2012 Spinning rod, 8lb line and the deepest I've ever used it was @14 foot. Quote
detroit1 Posted March 18, 2012 Posted March 18, 2012 I use it all year (for me-apr to nov), and almost every outing. I use 12#braid to a swivel, then my leader is 6# ice braid. I use a size 1 or 2 ewg hook with a hitch-hiker attached to the bend. After 5 yrs of fishing the d/s, this is what works the best for me. Quote
bugman Posted March 18, 2012 Posted March 18, 2012 I like to think of the Drop Shot rig as a way to keep your bait off the bottom. It can be fished at any depth and water color. Just adjust the distance between the weight and hook for the depth your fishing and how far off the bottom the fish are. Up here on lake Erie many guys use the drop shot for suspended fish in deep water and the weight never get near the bottom. You can fish verticle or cast it out and drag it back to the boat. I know you can use a bait caster with a XF tip but I always have used a ML spinning rod 7' or over in length. Quote
Crankenstein Crony Posted March 18, 2012 Posted March 18, 2012 I drop shot from when I start fishing in the end of March beginning of April until I put my boat away. I have used it in water as shallow as 1ft and as deep as 30ft. I prefer to use the rig on a 6'9 to 7'2 medium light spinning rod with a extra fast tip. I throw it on 10 pound braid and use a 8 pound fluorocarbon leader. I like to use a 1/0 Gamakatsu drop shot hook and a 1/4 to 1/2 weight. I've never tried to drop shot with casting gear. Can't say whether it is good for it or not. Quote
