WHats the main difference between these two baits as far as use is concerned?  When would you use one as opposed to the other, and what type of fishing were each of the types originally designed for?

I use them both regularly on a shaky head and tx rigged. I like the Trick worm better for its longer length but if they are not biting it well will switch to the smaller finesse worm. I see alot of guys using the trick worm weightless and wacky rigged.

What I would look at is the fall rate and what style of fishing you do. For example if I was fishing pockets of grass I would fish a floating worm more so than a trick worm because it floats and I can manipulate the fall better. With a trick worm because it is filled with salt I would have a hard time making it float. The same floating worm on a shakeyhead rig will float tail up which can be good in different situations. A trick worm because of the salt has a senko fall that in different situations can be good. Both catch fish but it can help you refine what you are doing to get a few more bites.

trick worms arent meant to float. There are high floater worms available.....trick worms arent one of them.

Trick vs finesse: The finesse is just a smaller version. Generally, you would go smaller when the water is clearer, colder, or the fish just arent very aggresive.

That being said the trick worm is one of the most simplistic, fish catching baits out there.

I was planning on using both for a shaky head jig setup.  Has anybody had any luck doing so?

My go to bait when fishing is tough, 1/8 oz to 1/4 oz shaky head with trick worm in green pumpkin. This combo has won me alot of money in the last 4 or 5 years.

The trick worm are supposed to be floaters...I use both of them. I like the trick used weightless and snaked alone the top, Texas rigged. The finesse I use Texas rigged, weighted and bounce a long bottom. I don't use shaky head that much, the river current wedges them between the rocks and I lose too many.  They catch fish that for sure.

i typically use them both on a shaky head jig..  i think the only major difference is their size...   but they both catch fish!  I use watermelon magic on a shaky head and slowly drag it over rocks..  its deadly on the smallies
