stkbassn Posted March 14, 2012 Posted March 14, 2012 I'm going to fish some finesse baits and texas rigs on a spinning rod this year...Will a 2500 size reel and 6'10 m or 7 MH spinning rod work for this application? If so, what rod. I was thinking of the Powell Diesel 6'10 Medium spinning rod...or the Temple Fork 7Mh Spinning rod... Suggestions? Quote
dag623 Posted March 14, 2012 Posted March 14, 2012 Picking one up myself this yr, looking at the pfluger trion combo at bps, in 6'6 medium. Quote
Super User Crestliner2008 Posted March 14, 2012 Super User Posted March 14, 2012 I would definitely lean toward the MH version of whatever you are searching for. You need the power for hook sets. Rod manufacturer is secondary, in my opinion. Quote
Vinny Chase Posted March 14, 2012 Posted March 14, 2012 By far the best spinning rod I have ever owned and would recommend for this application, is a 7'2" MH Cumara CUS72MH. Love the length, sensitivity, and backbone on this rod. I have mine paired with the 2500 series Stradic Ci4 Quote
backcast88 Posted March 14, 2012 Posted March 14, 2012 I picked up a 6'8" medium xfast BPS Carbonlite during the fishing classic and have used it several times and landed a fair amount of bass with it and never felt lacking in power. I would look for an xfast if you are getting a dedicated texas rig rod. If you are going to use heavy plastics then you might want the medium heavy but if you use smaller/lighter plastics I feel a medium is plenty. Quote
Super User J Francho Posted March 14, 2012 Super User Posted March 14, 2012 Here's your rod: http://www.bassresource.com/fishing_lures/pinnacle-DHC5-performa-review.html Quote
Super User Goose52 Posted March 14, 2012 Super User Posted March 14, 2012 Here's your rod: http://www.bassresou...rma-review.html Sounds like a great rod. I like 6'8" mxf spinning rods - very versatile. Great article BTW... Quote
Super User J Francho Posted March 14, 2012 Super User Posted March 14, 2012 Thanks. I really like that rod. Wish it said St. Croix on it, LOL. Here it is getting abused: Quote
Delaware Valley Tackle Posted March 14, 2012 Posted March 14, 2012 The 2500 size class spinning reel will work well especially with braided line or mono/fluoro in 10lb and under. If you'll want heavier line, you might have better luck managing the line on a 4000 size spool. Quote
Sherlock 60 Posted March 14, 2012 Posted March 14, 2012 This is the kind of set up I have been using for soft plastics for 5 years or so. Just upgraded to a 7' MH ABU Veritas spinning rod with a Pflueger Supreme XT reel. I use 20# braid. Quote
Sherlock 60 Posted March 14, 2012 Posted March 14, 2012 Picking one up myself this yr, looking at the pfluger trion combo at bps, in 6'6 medium. As I posted earlier I like a MH rod for this app. And I would suggest a bit longer than 6'6". I used a 6'6" BPS Bionic Blade MH rod for several years and am really happy with the extra casting distance I get with the 7' Veritas. Quote
Super User Darren. Posted March 14, 2012 Super User Posted March 14, 2012 Count me among the few who prefer shorter rods. Perhaps it is the places I fish, my height, the kayak, but I don't really like to go past 6'6". That said, a 6 to 6'6" MXF rod should be able to handle most everything. Something to be said for MH, but some rods (I believe like the Avid series, correct me if I'm wrong) are a tad stiffer than their rating. So one MXF may be stiffer than another, and more on the side of MH. I like the 2011 Compre rods from Shimano, the Avids, Carbonlites are great as well. If you can go to a store, put your reel on the different rods and get a feel for the balance and such, you'll probably be happier with your choice. My .02. And for reel size, look, I'm a small-reel fan. I use a Shimano Stradic 1000FI with 10lb PP braid main, 6-15lb leaders in various material. I have brought in some beasts with the 1000FI. I lost what we deemed a 7-8 lber just out of reach of my net the other day. Hauled it in w/o a hitch before she tail-danced and spit the hook in the net. The 6 pounder was caught shortly after. Again, no problem. A 2500 would probably be the biggest I'd go, but that's me. For the size rods you're looking at, a 2500 should be fine unless you want to go 3000 which is same size, but deeper spool. Quote
0119 Posted March 15, 2012 Posted March 15, 2012 I use a TFO spinning rod for texas rigs and using braid I stick with the Med.. You said you want to use finesse baits too? I'd think a MH would take away alot of casting performance and feel for light or average texas rigs and especially finesse rigs. Quote
buzzfrog Posted March 15, 2012 Posted March 15, 2012 MH vendetta and an okuma trio, s my spinning T-riigged rod at this moment, if i am pitchen T-rig it is a H daiwa balistic with a quatum Tour PT Quote
Stasher1 Posted March 19, 2012 Posted March 19, 2012 This is the kind of set up I have been using for soft plastics for 5 years or so. Just upgraded to a 7' MH ABU Veritas spinning rod with a Pflueger Supreme XT reel. I use 20# braid. x2 I keep a single MH baitcast setup for large spinnerbaits, chatterbaits, and heavy jigs. Everything else is done on spinning gear, with the majority of my soft plastics being thrown on a 6'8" MXF BPS Carbonlite and Pflueger Supreme XT or 7'M Browning HiPower and Ryobi Zauber, both spooled with hi-viz yellow 20# or 30# braid. ChiCityBasser Posted March 19, 2012 Posted March 19, 2012 I have a 7' MH/F Field & Stream Tech Spec RIg & Jig rod from Dicks that I use that is very sensitive for a bargain rod at $60 with the coupon. Don't know if they still make this model rod since they stepped up to micro guides. I also have a 6'9" M/F Cabelas XMLTi that I use for weightless plastics that works very well and you may still be able to find it in a Cabelas store as they were on clearance. Quote
