Super User Fishing Rhino Posted May 9, 2012 Super User Posted May 9, 2012 Would you want a date with her???? What the H---- is she going to look like in ten years?? Here we go again, someone is going to push through a law requiring tanning operators to be licensing and have training certificates. IMHO, they should be responsible to show some judgment for cutting a customer off when necessary. Like this. Maybe in less than ten years. Quote
Quillback Posted May 9, 2012 Posted May 9, 2012 BTW, if you're looking for a sunscreen mask for your face, do a search on Buff sunscreen mask. It's a lightweight (feels like silk) mask that you can cover your face and neck with. If you've watched Shaw Grigsby fish, it is the mask that he wears. I wear one sometimes during the summer. I have no ties to Buff or anyone that sells one, just recommending it if you're looking at a sunscreen mask. 1 Quote
WookieeJedi Posted May 9, 2012 Posted May 9, 2012 I finally went ahead and got the buff. It is really light and thin. I thought it would irritate my face, since I have a beard, but it doesn't. I got the Simms gloves at the same time. Those things are great. No more sunburned hands. 1 Quote
Traveler2586 Posted May 9, 2012 Posted May 9, 2012 Like this. Maybe in less than ten years. Grandpa is correct, I shouldn't judge. But look at what these poor woman have done to themselves. Can they ever recover from such extreme tanning? Maybe we should get some sunscreen and walk up & down the beach offering free applications to selected women. I'll volunteer to do whatever I can to help these poor sun drenched girls. Quote

quanjig Posted May 9, 2012 Posted May 9, 2012 Either one of those women can't possibly think that look is appealing to anyone!! If I was walking along that beach and saw that woman, I'd make like a cat and try to cover that terd!! Quote

Fish Chris Posted June 1, 2013 Posted June 1, 2013 >>> Getting new sunscreen every year is critical <<< How could a person go through a whole year, and not have to buy 3 or 4 bottles of sunscreen ??? I go through a medium / large bottle every 3 or 4 weeks. I put it on thick, everywhere sun hits, in the morning, before I leave the house. Then I reapply it at about 1-2pm..... But I do not cover up with anything, other than shorts and a tank top. Might I get skin cancer ? Sure..... if something else doesn't kill me first. Oh hey, for of you guys hiding from the sun, you should probably take some supplemental vit D. I only take it in the Winter, when I have to bury myself in cloths. I'm not saying everybody should be as wreckless as me. I'm just saying... Fish Quote
craww Posted June 1, 2013 Posted June 1, 2013 Ignorant question...does sunscreen hinder your ability to get a tan? Quote
BeckieC Posted June 2, 2013 Posted June 2, 2013 Ignorant question...does sunscreen hinder your ability to get a tan? Yes it does, a tan is actually sun damage too! As someone else said, the damage is cumulative. My grandpa worked outside all his life and he didn't really burn, just tanned, as a side effect from workimg hard. He was diagnosed with advanced melanoma 2 years ago, by the time it was caught it had spread and was literally everywhere in his body, he passed away just over a year ago. Protect yourself! Nutrogena Ultrasheer sunscreens are the least greasy and longest lasting protection available, a little more expensive but absolutely worth it. And, if you use a flex spending account for medical & prescriptions you can put sunscreen on it. I always buy 80+ and apply before I leave the house, it takes 20 mins or so for it to reach full protection. Quote
BeckieC Posted June 2, 2013 Posted June 2, 2013 Btw, not ignorant, good question, many people think a "base tan" is protection from burns. Quote
Traveler2586 Posted June 4, 2013 Posted June 4, 2013 This just in from CNN: "A new study finds that regular sunscreen use protects against photoaging: the wrinkling, spotting and loss of elasticity caused by exposure to the sun's ultraviolet radiation." Read it here: http://www.cnn.com/2013/06/04/health/sunscreen-aging/index.html Quote
Super User J Francho Posted June 4, 2013 Super User Posted June 4, 2013 Cool article! I wear sunblock all the time. I still get VERY tan. I'm also a very young looking 41 with very few wrinkles. I attribute this to my religious use of the stuff. But I still get dark. I'm half native American, though so that might make a difference. My back and chest do not see the light of day (haven't since I was a little kid) and they are milk white. Quote

My back and chest do not see the light of day (haven't since I was a little kid) and they are milk white. Sunscreen is tricky stuff. Most, if not all sunscreens need to be reapplied every half hour to hour, regardless of the spf rating. The spf rating is based on a constant, whereas when you apply it, it's usually before the sun is brightest, so it loses its potency rather quickly as the sun gets more strong, causing the sunscreen to break down. Sunscreens also protect you from UVB rays, the ones that cause burns, not UVA, the ones that cause cancer. The incidents of skin cancer have gone thru the roof since sunscreens were introduced to the market, mostly because people don't understand this and they think because they are lathered up, they are safe from cancer. They might be safe from a burn, but the UVAs still get thru to cause the cancer. Your best protection is cover yourself with lightweight clothing and a hat. Quote

That would make for a whole lot of pale pasty people. I use tanning oil with a SPF of 4 for the whopping one time a year I bronze myself. I lay out once and it last me a year. Go figure. I dont burn either. The rest of the time I'm covered from head to toe. Its so nice to be bronze year round. Ain't genetics great? Quote
grampa1114 Posted June 5, 2013 Author Posted June 5, 2013 First of all...let me say that having this discussion is making many of us more aware of the dangers involved with "Sunshine" and that is more important now than ever before. That said...the information I've been given, leads me to believe that UVB rays are the cancer causing rays and UVA rays cause aging and wrinkles which can multiply the effects of UVB rays. So, make sure that the sunscreen that you get has ample protection from both. It just seems like more protection is better than less. Again, thank you for listening. Grampa Quote
