grampa1114 Posted March 14, 2012 Posted March 14, 2012 Spring is coming early and we're back out there chasing the little green fish again. Protect yourself from the sun. I know, I know... sunshine is wonderful and keeps you warm and browns your skin and you look good because of it....nice....but the reality is that the stuff can give you a really ugly form of cancer that will scar you badly and maybe even kill you....so smarten up,,,, cover up and save your own skin....literally. Wear a hat, sunscreen(fresh every year), and if you can, protective clothing. I know that some of you have heard me on my soap box before, well I'm there again. Please listen to an old man who didn't do these things. Grampa 11 1 Quote

Super User Fishing Rhino Posted March 14, 2012 Super User Posted March 14, 2012 It will take more than a tan to make you look good. There's a reason our eyes start to fail us about the same time that we start to fall apart. Heck, I like what I see in the mirror, ...........until I put on my spectacles. Seriously, take heed to what Grampa says. He speaks from experience. Quote
Traveler2586 Posted March 15, 2012 Posted March 15, 2012 Yes, protect yourself the best way possible. You spend a lot of money on fishing equipment, winter gear, and so on, spend some on warm weather protective clothing too. I have tested positive several times, and undergone several surgeries, for skin cancer. I'm lucky in the fact that my wife works in the medical field and will push me to the doctor if she sees something wrong. I now undergo routine checkups with the skin doctor. Tip: "A BASEBALL CAP IS NO PROTECTION FOR YOU HEAD" (I get this from the Doc almost every visit). Cheers, Eric Quote
BassResource.com Administrator Glenn Posted March 15, 2012 BassResource.com Administrator Posted March 15, 2012 Yep, absolutely agree with Grampa. Getting new sunscreen every year is critical - the stuff goes bad and looses its effectiveness after a year. It does have a shelf life! Also, my neighbor has been battling skin cancer, and now cannot go outside except for very short bouts, and only if he's completely covered. Obviously that would be the end of fishing for any of us. So a very slight inconvenience of putting on sunscreen and wearing protective clothing is a very small price to pay, considering the alternative. 1 Quote

Super User Bankbeater Posted May 3, 2012 Super User Posted May 3, 2012 My Dad had skin cancer on his lips and around his mouth a couple of years ago. He had to go to a place that specialized in skin cancer surgery. Luckily it wasn't to deep. Quote

Traveler2586 Posted May 3, 2012 Posted May 3, 2012 I have started using a product called Sun-X, Professional Skin Protection and like it very much. I was introduced to it by another angler while on the water. It's a towelette in a sealed foil pouch with a oil-free and non-greasy sunscreen lotion. They're made for trades people that work outside all day. The pro's are: -it's in a foil pouch so it stays fresh, you can carry several in your back pocket. - it's a towelette, so you can wipe on the sunscreen like your washing your face with a cloth. - It's easy to get full ear coverage, even under the ear folds and so on. - it dose not sweat into your eyes nearly as much as greasy lotions or sprays. - When your done with it, jam the towelette back in the pouch and put in your pocket. - No need to wash off your hands after use. The Con's are: - It's only SPF-30 - The cost - about $11.75 for a box of 25 towelette I get them from Amazon, com at http://www.amazon.com/Sunscreen-Towelettes-SunX-Protection-Version/dp/B000BJUPHI/ref=wl_it_dp_o_pC_nS?ie=UTF8&coliid=I18YXS4YRFC4AE&colid=27J7CKNCLX2TS 1 Quote

grampa1114 Posted May 4, 2012 Author Posted May 4, 2012 Don't bother using the old stuff that you have, dig down into those pockets and spend $10 to 'save your own skin' literally. Grampa 1 Quote
Super User Sam Posted May 4, 2012 Super User Posted May 4, 2012 My dermo told me to use the highest SPF I could find that protects against both UVA and UVB rays. I looked at the bottle of Neutrogena ultar Sheer 85 and noticed it had expired in 2009. Will be replacing that tube with another one very soon. Thanks for reminding us about keeping safe from the sun's rays. Appreciate your soap box and lecture! Quote
Super User clayton86 Posted May 4, 2012 Super User Posted May 4, 2012 I usually don't wear sunscreen or anything iv never burned but now that im here in Kuwait im convinced its the surface of the sun and its not even the summer yet today there's not a cloud in the sky and its about 110* some one said. I walked out side to use the latrine its the hottest sunniest day I have ever experienced im gonna have to star wearing some sun screen or something if I get into the habit here maybe I will when im home. Funny thing is I always make sure the wife and kids have it and wear it when we go out but I wont touch it to my own skin. Quote
quanjig Posted May 5, 2012 Posted May 5, 2012 I have read that anything over SPF 45 is really not that much better than 45! just remember to apply liberally and often!! Quote

There's a reason the natives manner of dress covers them from head to toe, and it isn't just the mustaches on women. Keep your sleeves down, and wear a shemagh if you can. That SWA sun is no joke. flippin and pitchin Posted May 5, 2012 Posted May 5, 2012 My wife's dad died of an exposure enduced melenoma on his neck. She has a scar from her tear duct to her top lip from the same. SPF 100, boonie hat, long pants and shirt and sun gloves all. UV will kill you. Quote
Traveler2586 Posted May 6, 2012 Posted May 6, 2012 Play in the Sun, not with it. Skin cancer is no joke and sun damage is cumulative like other radiation exposures. You younger guy's,, pay attention to us old farts,, we're trying to save your hides - literally. Quote

Here we go again, someone is going to push through a law requiring tanning operators to be licensing and have training certificates. IMHO, they should be responsible to show some judgment for cutting a customer off when necessary. Quote
