Dr Pigg Posted October 10, 2009 Posted October 10, 2009 fished today with very little luck--only caught babies. Talked to some good fishermen at the put-in and both said the bass had moved out of the creeks into the grass flats off the creeks and both had good luck with rat-l-traps. I don't own a rat-l-trap!! Tell me what to go get, color, size, and how to fish them. I think the flats are in about 8-12 foot of water. When I fish DD22's in the 12-16 foot deep creeks and miss the creek I get into grass. Help for a newbie ;D Quote
Super User Catt Posted October 10, 2009 Super User Posted October 10, 2009 Bill Lewis ½ oz Rat-L-Trap color optional depending on lake but I throw Gold/Black Back/Orange Belly, RT25SP - LAKE FORK SPECIAL, RT820 - RED CHROME/SOLID Quote
CHEVYRIDAZ Posted October 11, 2009 Posted October 11, 2009 Try the Excalibur XR50 lures. They are waaaay better than a Rattle Trap! They weigh just a bit more so they can get down to where you need them. I like the chrome/blue back with orange belly! http://www.xcaliburtackle.com/rattle.asp Quote
Joe. S Posted October 11, 2009 Posted October 11, 2009 1/2 oz is a good size, one of the most popular colors is chrome/ blue back. I haven't bought a Bill Lewis Rattle trap in a long time, but when I did the hooks were crap, not sure if they changed them, but if not make sure you do. From the sounds of it, it is a normal trap pattern, let it sink down until you hit the grass, then rip it free then try and keep a steady pace right above it, letting it get caught up a little, something about the ripping it out part that triggers the strike, can also do a yo-yo type retrieve, ripping, letting it futter and ripping. I should take my own advice and try this today as that pattern should be getting ready to happen here pretty soon. Quote

Other colors and brands may work just fine, but this one is the BOMB! Chuck and wind, usually as fast as you can. The lure creates all the action, you don't "work" a trap. 8-) Quote
