Clinch Knot

[5 Dollar Fishing Game]

Since I started fishing the beginning of this year, I have used a clinch knot (the whole 7 twists and loop through the hole one) on all of my lures. Are there any advantages or disadvantages to staying with this knot? I see all over the web, YouTube, etc. of people using different knots for different lures. Any input is appreciated. - Joe

I use the clinch knot with mono. However, it is not good for fluoro as it kinks and burns the line, and the knot can slip using braid because it is slicker. I use a palomar for fluoro and either a palomar or uni knot for braid,

I'd step up a little to the Improved Clinch Knot for mono and like Jason said, use a Palomar on Fluorocarbon and Braid.

I started tying all different knots depending on line type....until I fell in love with the san diego jam. It is great for flouro, mono, and braid.

The only thing I change is the wraps. For instance for heavy flouro maybe 3, for slick braid maybe 8+ etc.

My "failures" went to 0 last season.

I also acknowledge the fact that it comes down to whatever knot you tie the most proper

I can't remember how many lured I lost in high school when I tried fishing a few years ago. I just did a double knot similar to a shoelace string lol. Obviously since I started fishing for real I learned to get away from that. Thanks for the advice all. ;-) joe

Don't discount a

for your soft plastics hooks! I find I have much better hookups with the line wrapped around the shaft of the hook as opposed to only the hook eye. Super easy to tie (as per the video). I use it on hooks down to size 4, whether wacky/drop shot, any manner of offset worm hooks, etc.

That said, I will use Palomar, then the Improved Clinch for some setups, (weedless, jigs, etc.) but 98% is snell now.

I use the improved clinch with my flouro. I know a lot of people say not to use it but I have never lost a fish due to my knot failing. I use 8-9 wraps and have landed fish from 1 lb to 6 lbs with the improved clinch.

I might try the San Diego jam just to add another knot my arsenal.

Just about any knot tied properly should hold. The majority of my fishing is in saltwater, I do not use flouro at all just braid and mono, my knots are clinch, improved clinch and a loopknot, quite honestly the strength of these knots are not a concern to me. I use the identical knots for my freshwater bass fishing, again with no concern, they work excellent. For the rare occasion when I tie leader to line the alberto is a great choice.

I recommend that you learn the Pitzen or 16/20 knot. It is all that I use. It works on any line. I can even tie it in under 12 seconds in the winter with gloves on. I do 5 wraps. I hold the loop in my left hand and the tag end (6-8") in the my right. I swing the bait around over my right hand 5 times, pass the tag through, pull it down, cut it off. Make a cast.

I use the clinch for mono and polomar for braid. If you have an ipod check out the app called Knot Wars. Really helpful for knowing some good knots to tie.

Thanks for the info and also the video links some posted. I really like the video info especially on YouTube. There, you can see in real time how these are tied and the best ways to do it. A ton of info on the web is available for fishing. :-) - Joe

Palomar is the easiest to tie in the wind, with gloves, etc. and won't slip with braid.

Been using a uni-knot for fluoro.mono and braid for years now and never had it fail me and you can tie this knot in the dark.

I must be old fashioned. I still use clinch and sometimes (rarely) double clinch for mono and copoly.

I use mostly the trilene knot and palomar knot for plastics and jigs. Topwaters, buzzbaits, and spinnerbaits get a trilene knot and crankbaits/jerkbaits a rapala knot.

Trilene for me too. Doesn't matter what type of line I'm using. Quick, easy, and I've never had a problem with it.
