pagliaroj Posted March 12, 2012 Posted March 12, 2012 Guys I got a pretty bad backlash with a braided line this weekend. It was my first time using braid, I usually just use Fluoro and have no problems getting them out with the thumb trick. For some odd reason it just isn't working with the braid, any idea's so I don't need to cut the line out? Quote
ChrisAW Posted March 12, 2012 Posted March 12, 2012 Just pull. I've never had a problem with cutting itself or anything. When you're pulling line and it stops, there will be a little loop thats grabbing your main line, right behind the levelwind. Sometimes just giving it a good pull with get it to come loose, but not too hard. If it won't, grab that little loop and try to pull it out, and it should free up your main line to pull the rest of it free. It will happen repeatedly. Quote
Shad_Master Posted March 12, 2012 Posted March 12, 2012 You don't have to worry about braided line getting kinks in it that will break later on - go ahead and pull on it. One trick that I have learned to cutting down on "professional overruns" with braid is to make sure you lay the line on the spool as tight as you can. This keeps it from getting buried. 1 Quote
Super User LgMouthGambler Posted March 13, 2012 Super User Posted March 13, 2012 The thicker the line, the easier it is to manage. I use 65# braid due to its 12# diameter. It also helps to keep the line from digging into itself on the spool with hooksets. Quote

Super User grimlin Posted March 13, 2012 Super User Posted March 13, 2012 what brand of braid are you using that has 12lb diameter? I think he meant .012 diameter.... I use Sufix 832 in 50lbs test and I have no problems digging out minor backlashes. I believe the one I use has a .014 diameter....pretty easy to pick that out to be quite honest. Once you start going .008 or below it becomes much, much harder to pick out backlashes(IMO). Quote

Super User LgMouthGambler Posted March 13, 2012 Super User Posted March 13, 2012 what brand of braid are you using that has 12lb diameter? Spiderwire Stealth Quote
MaineBassFishin Posted March 13, 2012 Posted March 13, 2012 Spiderwire Stealth Oh ok, is it good? Quote
Super User LgMouthGambler Posted March 13, 2012 Super User Posted March 13, 2012 Oh ok, is it good? Yeah, its been good to me. Never broke off, or lost a fish because of it. Most on here are Power Pro advocates, but I always have used Spiderwire for my braid, and its done me good. The price is right too. Quote

Never have been a fan of PP either, Spiderwire has always performed very well on both spinners and baitcasters that I have. Quote
Super User SoFlaBassAddict Posted March 13, 2012 Super User Posted March 13, 2012 What's a backlash? It's this strange phenomenon that happens when all the planets are aligned. It's truly a magical thing. You should try it out once yourself. It's a great way to send a heavy lure into orbit..... Anybody in Kansas find that Hudd I launched a couple of weeks ago? Quote

Super User Nitrofreak Posted March 14, 2012 Super User Posted March 14, 2012 Be very careful answering a question like that. LOL, I told the wife when we met that I was a brutally honest person, I also let her know that if she did not want the honest truth, then don't ask the questions. Even after being forewarned of this...she still asked the question...I felt like a bumble bee in a s**t storm. Quote
bassnmike78 Posted March 14, 2012 Posted March 14, 2012 just picked up some 50 lb power pro today . 9 bucks 150 yards at dicks Quote
Crookedneck Posted March 15, 2012 Posted March 15, 2012 I use Reel Majic on my braid. Makes a big difference, at least in my opinion. Quote
pagliaroj Posted March 15, 2012 Author Posted March 15, 2012 Thanks for the tips guys, after working it for about 30 minutes I was able to get it out. I don't think I had it tight enough to begin with. CrookedNeck do you use the aeresol one or the non aeresol bottle of Reel Magic? Quote
Super User SoFlaBassAddict Posted March 15, 2012 Super User Posted March 15, 2012 Just sayin, KVD's Line & Lure spray > Reel Magic Quote
Crookedneck Posted March 16, 2012 Posted March 16, 2012 I use the aeresol. I have used a few others all seem to work pretty well. I just prefer the reel majic. Quote
heyerfam@bellsouth.net Posted June 3, 2012 Posted June 3, 2012 The larger braided line may help aleviate the "digging in" that causes nasty backlashes but two other things you can try........first loosen your drag, due to braid having no stretch the drag with a braided line needs to be set lighter than with mono or floro...........yes it makes perfect sense and it will keep the braided from burying in your spool with you set the hook hard, the fish will still get hooked. Second one is a Tip I heard which works great........throw a nice long cast and then hand strip out the equivilent of another long cast worth of line and then cut a small piece of electrical tape...it won't go all the way around the spool and then reel the line back in. This gives you plenty of line to fight a fish but will keep the braid from "burying" any deeper into the spool than the tape. Hope this helps Quote
