bassnleo Posted March 11, 2012 Posted March 11, 2012 With temps predicted to be 60 today, I'm preparing to head to Erie for my first 2012 outing. Plan on trying my hand at the largies in water that's probably still in the low 40's, or at least may be by late this afternoon in the shallow marshy areas. May even target some perch or crappies should the opportunity arise. Hope to have a good report later tonight! My jerkbaits are ready and willing!!! Quote
Super User ww2farmer Posted March 11, 2012 Super User Posted March 11, 2012 STFU!!!! LOL... Every bit of my home lake is ice free.......except the launch. It'll be gone soon, maybe even by the end of today. I am shooting for tuesday as my first day out this year. That is if we don't have to work. Rain on monday so probably no work. Fingers crossed. There are plenty of places with totaly open water, but with $4 gas and good fishing 10 mins away, I can wait. Quote
bassnleo Posted March 12, 2012 Author Posted March 12, 2012 It was a good day...... Water temp was 38 when we started, warmed to 41 by days end. 8 largemouth came to the boat for me, 2 for my partner. All but 1 were caught on jerkbaits fished sloooowly. The only non-jerkbait fish came on a sliver buddy. Earliest time in the year I have ever caught open water bass and coldest water I have ever had success in. I can't complain one bit. Quote
Super User tomustang Posted March 12, 2012 Super User Posted March 12, 2012 Good to know the action was there Quote
flyhatch Posted March 12, 2012 Posted March 12, 2012 Sounds like a great outing, thanks for the report. We went to Moraine, I caught one. warmest water we got to was 43. Quote
Zeeebassman 1 Posted March 12, 2012 Posted March 12, 2012 Can't wait to get out there. Boat is almost done. I need fish slime on my hands...lol Quote
flyhatch Posted March 19, 2012 Posted March 19, 2012 We hit the main lake yesterday. 21 smallies in the boat. Missed a bunch too. Started out in 43 fow and moved in as the day went on. I caught a few in 17 to twenty as well. I tried a lc pointer in 12 to 15 and had some staring it down but no takers. Lake was like glass, made the run from shades beach area to east street launch in like 7 minutes Quote
bassnleo Posted March 19, 2012 Author Posted March 19, 2012 That's an awesome day Eric......and it's only March! This has been some early warm up. I boated 36 smallies in 2.5 hours Friday evening on the Allegheny. Lost count on largemouth at Pymatuning yesterday and took home 17 crappies in addition. Caught over 30 gills and crappies this morning from shore at Justus Lake. Just had fish dinner....YUM. My hands look like I ran steel wool on them from catching, holding, and cleaning fish (panfish), and the right side of my ribs are bruised from setting the hook. Crazy good! Quote
Super User Dwight Hottle Posted March 19, 2012 Super User Posted March 19, 2012 Glad you guys are tearing them up. I'll be after them soon. I can't wait. 1 Quote
flyhatch Posted March 20, 2012 Posted March 20, 2012 It was good to get back out there,It was like we just started back where we left off in late November. Sounds like Pymy is on fire. Hell, I didnt even try the river yet. Quote
Bill Street Posted March 21, 2012 Posted March 21, 2012 Headed to Presque Isle the end of the month. Can't wait. Quote
Super User A-Jay Posted March 21, 2012 Super User Posted March 21, 2012 Headed to Presque Isle the end of the month. Can't wait. Welcome to BR Bill Street ! I'll be there as well (mid-April) Good Luck. I'd appreciate it if you'd leave some of the larger fish for me. A-Jay Quote
Bill Street Posted March 21, 2012 Posted March 21, 2012 Welcome to BR Bill Street ! I'll be there as well (mid-April) Good Luck. I'd appreciate it if you'd leave some of the larger fish for me. A-Jay Thanks for the welcome A-Jay My buddy and I normally head up mid-April as well but with the warmer temp's we figured the end of March would be good. This is our third year of heading up and exploring. We normally don't fish the main lake much simply due to a lack of time. Last year we amused ourselves with chunky LM's on a mudline towards the mouth of the Bay. We have brought in some smallies but our timing always seems off to really get into them. Quote
bassnleo Posted March 23, 2012 Author Posted March 23, 2012 Your timing this year should be good for smallies, they are already being caught in the bay. Heck, I know guys who caught some last weekend. Regardless, by mid April they are in the bay every year. Have a good trip! Quote
flyhatch Posted March 24, 2012 Posted March 24, 2012 Im headed up in the am. If the main lake dosent pan out, Im sure we will be headed for the bay. Quote
