tylerdanielmoser Posted March 11, 2012 Posted March 11, 2012 Ok I've never used them before but I was wondering if bass attractants and scents work?? I hear a lot of talk online about them and on youtube but would like to hear from you all. So let me know please. And if you do like to use them which ones do you think are the best ones? Quote
ripinthem Posted March 11, 2012 Posted March 11, 2012 My unscientific eyeballs say they don't matter much to bass. That being said, I've had luck with JJ's magic when the water is cold. I've tried most brands , and comparing the bite in real time with/without, I'd focus more on action/texture/weight of the baits, than their smell, but whatever gives you confidence. Quote

I agree here,I don't believe the bass hone in on the smell as much as we like to think. I'd like to think that once they bite a bait with scent, there's a higher possibility of them holding on just a second or two longer.Allowing you to set the hook on them. Again it could be just confidence as well. Berkley has some of the nastiest smelling baits on the market, yet they work pretty well. So what do I know?! I made a jar of crayfish scent, that actually smells like crayfish....and I mean STRONG SMELL! I've used it a few times and one day I ran into a school of hungry Smallmouths that really favored that crayfish scent(tried a bait without it and they stopped biting). There was about 40-60 people lined up around that river bank and I was the only one catching them. Confidence? Scent? or pure luck on my part? I'd like to think it was a combination of all three...LOL.....at one point I was asked if I was a professional fisherman. I laughed and said "no". Quote
Super User NorcalBassin Posted March 11, 2012 Super User Posted March 11, 2012 For me it is more getting my scent off the bait than actually trying to attract fish with a certain scent. I use Pro Cure and Bang (able to just spray) but plan to pick up some JJ's with my next TW order. Quote
Super User smalljaw67 Posted March 11, 2012 Super User Posted March 11, 2012 I have found the use of scent does help, not in attraction but it does keep them holding on to the bait longer. I had a day were scent saved it for me, I was getting bites but as quick as the fish would pick it up they would spit it out. I was fishing a jig with a zoom super chunk and it was getting bit, but either the fish were really spooky or something they didn't like was on the jig because they didn't even let me attempt a hook set but that all changed with a little scent, I put some on and the first bite I got the fish was hooked pretty deep, if I would have waited a second I believe he weould have tried to swallow it. Super User eyedabassman Posted March 11, 2012 Super User Posted March 11, 2012 The ONLY two that I use are JJ's Magic and Mega-Strike. The Mega-Strike is a cream base so I sue that whem I am punching in heavy weeds. The JJ's I use when,T-rig,C-rig,ect. Quote
Super User ww2farmer Posted March 11, 2012 Super User Posted March 11, 2012 Since I often go straight from work to fishing, even tho I wash my hands, I am working with oil/grease/diesel fuel/etc....I use scent to cover that up just in case. Does it work? IDK. I catch fish, so it don't hurt. I use Megastrike. If a bait has scent, like SK coffee scent,Gulp/powerbait, or Netbaits scent, I don't bother. I mainly use it on unscented plastics like Zoom, Yamamoto, Z-man, etc... Quote
Red Posted March 11, 2012 Posted March 11, 2012 I use Megastrike. I don't know if it makes a difference but it makes me feel better. Quote
SAC2 Posted March 11, 2012 Posted March 11, 2012 love to use gulp products! ive used the straight berkley product (exact same lure without the scent) and couldnt catch them. put on a gulp and couldnt keep em off my line. thats trout fishing though. Quote
WCCT Posted March 11, 2012 Posted March 11, 2012 I use Upperhand Scents. The Hawg Sauce is great. They also have coffee/shad, hawg/anise, and hawg/garlic that all work great. These are some of the most potent scents on the market. I cook these into plastic when I pour my own and also marinate other plastics by just putting a few drops in the original bag. I don't hit the water with out it, that's for sure. Quote
msolorio Posted March 11, 2012 Posted March 11, 2012 i use megastrike and pro cure a lot. i believe the right scent actually does work. theres been a few articles written about scents and how bass perceieve those scents that makes a lot of sense. fish in general dont smell like we smell, they pick up the amino acids and they pass through a series of sensory organs that determine what theyre smelling. its been documented that oil based scents dont really work because the molecules are much to large for the fish' sensory organs. this is all things ive read in a nutshell lol i think they work, ive tested it and though i didnt completely annihalate em with a scent i did however catch more and they held on longer and took the bait deeper thus resulting in better hooksets. Super User Crestliner2008 Posted March 12, 2012 Super User Posted March 12, 2012 MegaStrike here too. Maybe scents don't make a difference, but with all the money I invest in rods, reels & tackle, I'm not taking any chances! Quote
WookieeJedi Posted March 12, 2012 Posted March 12, 2012 I put a little something into all my bags of soft plastics, that way the scent gets soaked in. I think it makes a difference. Quote
cajun_flipper Posted March 12, 2012 Posted March 12, 2012 I tip all of my soft plastics with chartruse JJ's. To me, it's not really about the scent as much as it is the color. I figure the garlic can't hurt though. I'm going to go out on a limb and say that having a proven scent of whatever type on a lure has to help...seeing as how cheap soft plastics that smell like a tupperware container have never caught a fish for me...anywhere. Maybe its confidence, maybe its science...either way it works. I've used the sprays and never had any luck with them. Megastrike is good stuff, but I rarely carry it anymore...mainly because I don't order online often. Quote
tylerdanielmoser Posted March 12, 2012 Author Posted March 12, 2012 Yeah I'm just going to get a good sealed bag and put some of the scent into the bag and then place my plastics in the bag and let them get it on. Quote

In case you dont know Megastrike is sold at Dicks Sporting Goods, I just bought some, will be trying this stuff out havent use scent in the past. Quote
cajun_flipper Posted March 13, 2012 Posted March 13, 2012 Thanks! I think there is a Dick's on the other side of Baton Rouge. I'll have to check it out when I'm brave enough to take my chances on the 18 wheelers flipping over left and right here. Traffic is terrible between that side and mine. I'm unfortunately in need of a trip to the mall out of all god forsaken places, so I'll pick up a tube of megastrike as salvation from shopping with the sheeple Quote
Daniel My Brother Posted March 13, 2012 Posted March 13, 2012 I like Bang Garlic. Don't know if it helps me catch more fish, but it reminds me of the Italian restaurant back home. Quote

Super User J Francho Posted March 13, 2012 Super User Posted March 13, 2012 I use JJ's and Megastrike as "add on" scents. I also have good results with Gulp! and Gulp! Alive as well as Powerbait and Keitech scented baits. I do not believe that they "attract" bites, but I do believe that bass take longer to reject a scented bait. Quote
Super User iceintheveins Posted March 14, 2012 Super User Posted March 14, 2012 I think they make a small difference most of the time, turning a few sniffers into biters. Megastrike is the one I use most, and smelly jelly second. I think the best thing about them is they mask scents like sunscreen, gasoline, and bug spray. Quote
flipin4bass Posted March 17, 2012 Posted March 17, 2012 I smother my baits with the Hawg Sauce gel and its made me a believer. Quote
