Super User Matt Fly Posted October 10, 2009 Super User Posted October 10, 2009 I was reading a thread, Catching your own bait. Someone mentioned paying 24.00 bucks for a dozen in Maryland I believe. When I was stationed in So Cal in the mid 80's, a dozen of crappie minnows was 6.99 and Bass shinners were 12.99 for large and 8.99 for mediums. I have noticed for the most part, that minnows, shinners are now sold by the pound for the most part. Just curious, what do ya'll pay for a dozen of crappie, and bass minnows? Lg, med, smalls? In San Diego, instead of buying the crappie minnows, which a Navy guy couldn't afford most likely at any time in his career, cause a dozen isnt gonna catch many, and cost of daily use permits, its too expensive, so I started using feeder goldfish from the pet stores at a Nickle a piece. Goldfish worked great as a substitute, caught as many as minners would. Lets here your bait prices and alternatives if legal in your state. I say legal, cause in some bodies of water, goldfish may be illegal to use. Quote
jamarkwe Posted October 10, 2009 Posted October 10, 2009 I think using Goldfish is Illegal anywhere in the states. Quote
BrianSnat Posted October 10, 2009 Posted October 10, 2009 I only use live bait in the winter for ice fishing. Last winter shiners ran $6.99 a dozen for the large and herring were $7.99 a dozen. Quote
mr.mallard Posted October 10, 2009 Posted October 10, 2009 wow crappie minnow run like 2.50 a dozen here and i still think its over priced..........about 15 years ago they were 0.25 a dozen Quote
Super User Matt Fly Posted October 10, 2009 Author Super User Posted October 10, 2009 LOL, illegal in all states, nope, goldfish are sold in Texas at baitshops, very common trotline bait. Quote
JigMe Posted October 10, 2009 Posted October 10, 2009 Matt, 20 bucks+ per trip for live baits. $4.99/dozen for minnows...not 24 dude! But still over priced, I remember when I was a kid and living at Tyler, Tx it was like 50 cents a dozen. Quote
shootermcbob Posted October 10, 2009 Posted October 10, 2009 Not sure what actual price for minnows is, but when I take my daughter or nephew(only time I use live bait) in local bait shop, the owner puts more minnows in the bucket than we can use for 2.00. He is a good dude. Quote
CHEVYRIDAZ Posted October 10, 2009 Posted October 10, 2009 Local shop here has large shiners(8-10") for $10 a dozen! Quote
Daniel My Brother Posted October 10, 2009 Posted October 10, 2009 Minnows are around $2.50/dozen for large. You normally get more than you pay for, but even the large are seldom longer than 2". Goldfish are legal in Missouri and very popular for flatheads. We use throw nets for live shad when catfishing. When we get more than we can use, we freeze the excess, still a great bait even months later. Reminder: when you're done fishing, don't throw leftover live bait in the lake. Quote
Super User Crestliner2008 Posted October 10, 2009 Super User Posted October 10, 2009 Live bait.....? What's that? Quote
infamous512 Posted October 10, 2009 Posted October 10, 2009 It's about $3/dozen of minnows here. Quote
Super User Bassn Blvd Posted October 10, 2009 Super User Posted October 10, 2009 Minnows are $1.25 a dozen here in Palm Beach, Florida. But Shiners are a different story. Hawk and I paid $25 a dozen for big wild ones. Quote
Super User roadwarrior Posted October 10, 2009 Super User Posted October 10, 2009 Big bass minnows: $13/ lb (4-5 dozen) Medium (for sauger): $7.75/ lb (about 6 dozen) Small (crappie): $7.75/ lb (8-9 dozen) We figure we need about a dozen per man/per hour on the Tennessee River. 8-) Quote

Super User MALTESE FALCON Posted October 11, 2009 Super User Posted October 11, 2009 Recently, the only time I get live bait is when I take my grandkids out. Golden shiners are $5.00 a dozen (about 24) they are about 2 1/2"-3 1/2" long. Falcon Quote
