PondBassin Posted March 11, 2012 Posted March 11, 2012 Hey guys, While fishing today, I caught multiple bass, and noticed how they all had different eye colors. I've noticed it the whole time I've fished, but have never really been that interested until I actually payed attention to it. So, my question is, what does different eye color mean? Its probably hereditary, but I'm just curious if any of you knew of it be to off any importance. Thanks, PB Quote
Phranchise1213 Posted March 11, 2012 Posted March 11, 2012 I have heard that the smallmouth up here in Ontario have red eyes sometimes from cross breeding with Rock Bass!!!!!! I think its just a bunch of malarky tho...who knows!?? Quote
Bass-minded Posted March 11, 2012 Posted March 11, 2012 I caught a largemouth bass a couple days ago and it had yellow eyes. I don't know why though. It was kinda cool looking. I kinda wish I had yellow eyes. 1 Quote
Super User ww2farmer Posted March 11, 2012 Super User Posted March 11, 2012 The rock bass/smallmouth cross breeding is non-sense. Some times they just have red eyes..........why................only god knows. I do seem to see more with red eyes in the spring, maybe a spawning thing, but IDK . Quote

PondBassin Posted March 11, 2012 Author Posted March 11, 2012 I'm just curious because you see largemouths down here what have amber, red, yellow, and more colors and it doesn't seem to have a pattern or significance to anything else. Not sure if the same applies for smallies. Quote
Outdoor Posted March 11, 2012 Posted March 11, 2012 Eye color is directly related to how they dress that day 2 2 Quote
Super User NorcalBassin Posted March 11, 2012 Super User Posted March 11, 2012 I kinda wish I had yellow eyes. If you drink enough, they will come. Funny thing about red eyes... my little girls refuse to touch any bass they catch with me if they have red eyes because they're really mad fish that might try to bite them. Gotta love kids. 1 3 Quote
Tim Gamble Posted January 24, 2018 Posted January 24, 2018 My understanding is that when largemouth have bright brown or red eyes they are in a spawn phase Quote
Scarborough817 Posted January 24, 2018 Posted January 24, 2018 people have different coloured eyes and so do bass its all genetic Quote

Super User WRB Posted January 24, 2018 Super User Posted January 24, 2018 Georgia Red Eye bass are a seperate black bass species. Smallmouth often have red eyes, not common with LMB and nothing to do with the spawn. Next topic red lips. Tom 1 Quote
