NCbassmaster4Life Posted March 10, 2012 Posted March 10, 2012 So finally after six and a half years working for the Navy, soon I will be departing...how is the bass fishing been the past six and a half years at this lake? Quote
Rangerphil Posted March 10, 2012 Posted March 10, 2012 Well I don't know alot but back in 07 I fished a rangers owners tournament there and was pitching a spinnerbaits back into the trees and was slaying them! One of the best days I have had fishing! Quote
jeremyt Posted March 11, 2012 Posted March 11, 2012 Bass fishing has been declining a lot there from my accounts and word of mouth. From what I hear the fish have a disease, and the numbers are declining. A big fish there is in the 3-4 pound class. Tourney bags are in the 12-14 range where a few years ago they were in the upper teens to lower 20s. I will be fishing there a few times this year myself. Quote
NCbassmaster4Life Posted March 11, 2012 Author Posted March 11, 2012 Man that's not cool...plus the lake is dern near impossible to fish in the summer all the dern jet skis and people that just dont care about fishermen. Quote
jeremyt Posted March 11, 2012 Posted March 11, 2012 It can get hairy in the summer, my family and I have been camping there every summer for the past 12 years. We stay on the NC side a few miles from the border. I have never had too much luck, but it's usually 95 degrees plus. My club also has a fall tournament there every year. I like Gaston much more for bass, but it's generally a relaxing week with the family. Quote
heyitskirby Posted March 12, 2012 Posted March 12, 2012 Staying on this lake while working down here. Planning on moving my boat down here in the next couple of weeks. Mostly been after catfish from the bank but in an hour of fishing over the last 3 days I've caught 1.5 lb white bass and a 1 lb largemouth. Not sure yet what species I plan on focusing on (crappie, cats, bass) but as always I want to be mostly bass fishing. Will post anything I catch, but would appreciate some tips as well. Curious about the disease issue...only affecting bass? Anything to worry about food-wise? My roommates want some catfish and crappie for the table.... And speaking of cats....NC...in case you did not know...world record Blue Catfish was caught near Clarksville late last summer. Quote
BILLYsobx Posted March 13, 2012 Posted March 13, 2012 I fish there at least twice a year. We fish the Greenville Marine Tournament Trail. It's true about the smaller bags. Still see 6-7 lbers weighed in. The virus only affected lg mouth bass. Last I heard the virus is under control. It got to the point that we were told to clean our livewells after we put fish in there. So that it doesn't get transmitted to another body of water. As far as the fishing, the flooded gum-trees, willows, and nut-bush are awesome during the spawn. Lost a big one 2 yrs ago on a chart 1/2 oz buzzbait. probably 6+ Quote
NCbassmaster4Life Posted March 13, 2012 Author Posted March 13, 2012 Well I will see about the disease issue and see what i can do to help out. Quote
Super User Sam Posted March 13, 2012 Super User Posted March 13, 2012 Check out the water level on Buggs. 303 and higher means the water is in the bushes and the fishing is great! http://www.saw.usace.army.mil/jhkerr/pwrhouse.htm Also check out this site: http://www.kerrlake.info/fishing/index.htm GET A GEMCO MAP OF THE LAKE. The lake is very big and you can get lost easily so have a map and electronics that will track where you go. Many places to launch your boat and depending on where you launch there are many places to fish on Kerr. Tournaments from this weekend until November can back up a ramp but since blastoffs are at 6AM and weigh-ins around 3 or 4 you can plan accordingly. If you can get a cabin at the state park by Clarksville you will have a great place to stay and a good ramp to launch your boat. http://www.dcr.virginia.gov/state_parks/occ.shtml Be sure to have your Virginia fishing license with you; your fire extinguisher on the boat; PFDs for everyone; and have a fun time!!! BILLYsobx Posted March 14, 2012 Posted March 14, 2012 SI thought any lake bordering state lines as long as you had a valid license for ur state which was one of the bordering states u could fish entire lake Quote
heyitskirby Posted March 14, 2012 Posted March 14, 2012 SI thought any lake bordering state lines as long as you had a valid license for ur state which was one of the bordering states u could fish entire lake This isn't true for all of them, but Gaston and Buggs Island you can fish any part of the lake with either an NC or VA license. South Holston is the exception. It requires a completely separate license. Quote
