Jake P Posted March 10, 2012 Posted March 10, 2012 Is all i can fit!! Between all of our gear and tackle we get 6 setups between my father in law and myself. It drives me insane because i like to have every option available to me at all times when fishing and when i can only fit 3 i have to combine my presentations and i end up throwing something on a rod and reel im not 100% happy with. But i manage. 7 MH/F bc for t rigged plastics of any kind. 6'6" MH/F bc for spinnerbaits. And my 3rd is where it gets comlicated. I want a rod for weightless plastics/ soft jerkbaits or light hard jerkbaits but i cant seem to find the right rod and reel for that. If i use spinning it doesnt work with the jerkbaits, if i go 7 ft for my weightless plastics it hurts me when throwing jerkbaits cause its not easy with a longer rod. I think im going to try and find a 6'8" or 6'9" M/F baitcast setup and be done with it. Do yall have to combine setups, if so, how does it work out for yall? Quote
Packard Posted March 10, 2012 Posted March 10, 2012 You can almost every do technique with these: 6'6"-7' M/F Spinning 6'6"-7' MH/F Baitcasting 7' MH/M Baitcasting As for your case, I would throw jerkbaits on your spinnerbait rod then use a spinning rod for weightless plastics. Quote
Georgia Jeff Posted March 10, 2012 Posted March 10, 2012 I use all of these setups below with baitcasters 6'6 or 6'8 mh fast for weighted plastics, frogs, spinnerbaits 6'6 m fast for weightless plastics 6'6 ml fast (bends almost as much as a moderate) for everything with a treble hook and crazy light weightless plastics. So far i have not found a situation where these combos wouldnt work. I have to switch out baits every now and then but thats not to bad. A spinning reel would do the job as good or better for the weightless plastics but i dont like fishing them. I also don't mess with longer rods because I fish mostly small river systems and ponds and therfore dont need the extra casting distance and also they don't fit in my truck as easily. Quote
Super User LgMouthGambler Posted March 10, 2012 Super User Posted March 10, 2012 If I could only bring 3 rigs..... One would be my 6'6 MH w 17# Mono Spook rig. Second would be my 6'6 MH w 65# braid my frog rig. Third would depend on how heavy of cover im gonna fish, if it the flats its gonna be 7'0 MH w 65# braid for a plastics swimbait/t rigged. If im going canal style, 7'0 M w 20# hybrid for my plastics. Quote
endless Posted March 10, 2012 Posted March 10, 2012 I would try looking into a spinning setup ranging in the 6'6-7' M-F for wacky , and shaky. Quote
esoxangler Posted March 10, 2012 Posted March 10, 2012 If I may make a suggestion for you to take a look at, St. Croix offers a 6'8" Medium XF in the avid lineup in both bc and spinning. Works real well for weightless plastics as well as jerkbaits, makes a decent topwater rod also, at least in my experience. (They offer it in all their lineups in some form or another, starting at the Mojo line.) They also offer a 6'8" MHF in several, but not all of thier line, starting at the Rage. Quote
Super User ww2farmer Posted March 10, 2012 Super User Posted March 10, 2012 If I could take just 3 or mine they would be: St Croix 6'8" M/XF Mojo spinning rod with Shimano Sedona 2500, 10lb braid/with an 8lb fluoro leader St Croix 7' M/F Legend Tournament with Shimano Curado 51E, 20lb braid St Croix 7' MH/F Legend Tournament with Shimano Curado 51E,30lb braid The spinning rod could handle drop shotting, flick shaking, shaky heads, other misc small stuff, the M power casting rod could do all treble hooked lures, not the best for deep divers but I have used it and works fine, plus light cover work with smaller jigs and t-rigs. The 7' MH could be used for pitching, not an ideal flipping rod but it would do ok, c-rigs, frogs, spinnerbaits, jigs/t-rigs.Yeah I could live with those three. Quote

elkriverangler Posted March 10, 2012 Posted March 10, 2012 My 3 are a lot different than most of you because I am primarily Fishing a Medium RIver for Smallmouth out of a Kayak. 6' Medium Light SC Avid Spinning with Shimano Sahara 1000 Topwater Jerkbaits Plastics other than Senkos 6'3 Medium Light XF SC Avid with Shimano Stradic 1000 Senkos 6'6 Medium Falcon Bucoo BC with Revo SX Spinnerbaits Crankbaits These are all I need for the River Smallmouth Fishing I do. I will occasionally fish a Small Lake nearby for LM and I use the Bucoo/Revo SX and a Abu Garcia Rod with a Revo and I use a 6'3 Medium XF Crucial with a Sahara 2500 for Spinning Needs. Quote
Super User smalljaw67 Posted March 10, 2012 Super User Posted March 10, 2012 Go with a 6'8" to 6'10" Medium powered, fast action rod, this will give you the a little extra length for making longer casts with weightless plastics and still be within a good jerkbait length without getting too long. Super User bigbill Posted March 10, 2012 Super User Posted March 10, 2012 Just three ?? even fishing from shore i carry a minimum of 5 setups. But ok i'll narrow it down. 1. 7' heavy backbone spinning rod w/14lb test (topwater / larger deeper running crankbaits) 2. 6'6'' medium/heavy spinning rod w/10lb test (crankbaits/inline spinners/spinnerbaits) 3. 6' medium spinning rod w/ 17lb test and 20lb test leader (carolina rig worm/ senko /plastics) If i could squeeze in a number 4 it would be a 5'6'' med/light spinning rod w/ 6lb or 8lb test for the smaller/lighter lures. backcast88 Posted March 11, 2012 Posted March 11, 2012 My dad and I have to combine our gear as well. My setups are usually: 1. BPS Carbonlite 6'8" m/xf spinning rod with Daiwa Aird 2500 and 8 lb Seaguar InvizX for texas worms/brush hogs, and flukes. 2. BPS Carbon Black 6'6" m/f spinning rod with Daiwa Aird 2500 and 8 lb XPS flouro for drop shot or small crankbaits or spinner baits. 3. BPS Extreme 6'6" m/f baitcast rod with BPS Extreme 10 HLE and 14 lb Stren braid for big crankbaits and jigs. Quote
SausageFingers Posted March 12, 2012 Posted March 12, 2012 I run with three also, mainly because of limited space. Here's what I have: 6'-6" MH Veritas / 6.4:1 Revo SX - Jigs, flipping (swimming, bladed, etc.) 7'-0" M Veritas Winch / 6.4:1 Revo SX - Cranking (Just got the winch. Love it so far). 6'-6" M Vendetta / 7:1 Revo STX - General use, no specific application. I actually like this setup for jerk baits. I also have a 6'-6" M Vendetta spinning rod that I swap out with the casting version when I think I'll need to go lighter. It also works well for lighter jerk baits. Quote
