Scorcher214 Posted March 8, 2012 Posted March 8, 2012 Saw this fella after I got home from picking my brother up. Ran inside quickly and grabbed my moms camera and took a few pictures. I looked it up as well and last year, due to an abundance of lemmings (food source), there were more babies born. And now more are having to fly further south to find food. Quote
Super User Raider Nation Fisher Posted March 9, 2012 Super User Posted March 9, 2012 Cool pic. Nope I haven't seen any snow owls. Haven't seen any snow this year either. Quote
quanjig Posted March 9, 2012 Posted March 9, 2012 Wow, those things are bad arse!. I read an article about the migration. The article said it happens very cyclicly (?sp) and like you said, relating to the lemming population. Because the diet consists of something like 90% lemmings and they were so abundant, the clutch size of adult snowy owls was sometimes 4 or more chicks!! After the lemmings do what they do and the hunting grounds are void of lemmings, a migration occurs that bring them further south than normal. They always remind me of the Rush album cover for "Fly By Night" Jeeeez, I just really dated myself!! Quote
llPa1nll Posted March 13, 2012 Posted March 13, 2012 I have seen one way out on the ocean on Plum Island, in the Parker Nature Preserve, in Massachusetts. Quote
