im 17 and im a junior in high school. i wanna be a diesel technician. im already looking at colleges and have one that im looking hard at. the thing is my mom constantly belittles me because i dont have the most mechanical experience. its high school for petes sake im not on the job. she thinks that i cant do it. im going to boces next year for heavy equipment operation where ill learn to operate and maintain various pieces on machinary. she looked into it said that they focus more on operation than repairing the equipment in the one year program im taking vs the 2 year that i cant take. it angers me. i wish i took the 2 year program instead the of the carpentry program im taking now and will finish this year. im am glad i took it though because i learned some valuble skills from it. im a pretty good framer and roofer. i believe that being a diesel tech is right for me becuase i like to work with my hands and its much more stable than construction.

sorry for the long post i just need to vent

Gotta start somewhere, learning to operate a machine and doing preventative maintenance is the beginning. What's the curriculum entail at boces?

Sounds like you've thought it through fairly well to me and chosen a field where there should be plenty of work and jobs. If it's what you want to do is the most important thing I think. I can understand what you're dealing with. When I turned 21 I started working as a sheriff deputy in the jail in Kansas City, KS (not the safest place to work). So my parents were both not excited about it but I can say pretty confidently that I'll always have a job as long as I do what I'm supposed to do and shouldn't ever get outsourced. Plus there is good benefits and retirement if retirement still exist by the time I'm old enough to retire.

Smart choice! What boces are you attending I'm a diesel/agricultural/ heavy equipment instructor at the Orleans/Niagara boces in medina.

You have so many options taking this route as well I have kids on farms, working in labs for cummins and caterpillar, ford dealerships you name it heck even got one kid who works for carnival cruise ships maintaining the ships engines. He makes great money and sits on a cruise ship and gets paid for it!

Also what schools are u looking at attending I can recomend a few and tell you what I know about each as iv been to most for tours plus iv attended school at baran now Lincoln tech.

Hit me up with any questions or what ever ya want ta know I can even steer ya the right direction to win mom over.

Go to the University of Northwestern Ohio.

Best place there is if you wanna be a diesel tech.

the curriculum is mostly how to operate each machine safely and correctly they have and how to do basic maintenance. also if you wanted they can teach you basic fabrication. they have an 11acre field and they pretty much say dig a hole this big with this machine and grade on that and do snow removal in the winter.

The Military is an option, they have great training, at 17 a four year tour would go by faster than you can imagine.

Kudos to you. At 17 i had no idea what I wanted to do.

Go with your gut. Your folks, God bless um, think they know what's best for you. All parents do. But only you can make that decision.

Good luck to you!

Morrisville is a great school I have a student there now I have buddy's that went there and the teacher I work under went there. Your only other option to stay in ny would be Alfred state. Both schools are a 2 year min and you have to take your normal math, english, and so on so be prepared for that. Cat also hires alot of people right from morrisville along with John deer two great company's to work for. Your possiblitys are endless with the field.

Idk how the program is run at your center but we do engine tear downs both years jrs and srs have to completly tear down to every last nut and bolt do all measurements and put it back together and it has to turn over not run because some engines are just beat but all the parts are there but they must turn over one complete cycle(720*) on top of that we do welding and torching, machinery operation we have a dozzer, backhoe, tractor, brushhog. We also do diagnostic and tune up the senior year. There's alot more but I'd be here all night typin up the ciriculum.

Also spend the 13 bucks or how ever much your center charges and go to skills USA it's worth the little investment iv got kids who got were offered 80% of there tuition knocked off for placing in the competition at the state and national level.

Back on school choices after school don't rule out outa state it's a great experience and ny state sucks lol. Like stated UNOH is pretty much the leader in the industry and it's a heck of alot cheaper then most tech school and ur done in 14 months and in te field or you can add some extra classes and take it to 18mo.

Nice we rent other equipment well it's donated we don't rent but we get anything we need. My program and schools pretty small.

Theres nothing wrong with morrisville or staying close to home. What direction did you want to take in the industry did you want to take the agricultural route, medium trucks, over the road, marine, generator, equipment operator. Do you have any idea what way u wanna take it.

And why doesn't your mom approve of your change in heart what doesn't she approve of.

As someone who operates modern farm equipment, you are making a wise choice. There are going to be a lot of oppetunitys for some one in that field in the near future. The the guys I have worked with from the dealerships on stuff we run were old enough to be my grandfather 20 years ago. Very little young blood in the field, we are going to be hurting for qualified and able techs sooner rather than later. IMHO.

This is great advice - and your fellow service men and women WILL support you - every step of the way.

Good Luck

i wanna work on heavy trucks, agricultural, and contruction equipment. id really want be mobile and work out of a service truck in the field.

my mom doesnt think i have the "mechanical aptitude" whatever that means. she thinks that i should know everything before i go to school. she gets that because i know a ton of carpentry skills because of the class im in and becuase ive been working with wood since i was 7. i wanted to be carpenter for a while but changed my mind and want to be a diesel tech and im serious about it. i admit im not the most mechanicl becuase i havnt been exposed to it much. the most of my experince was when i was volunteering my time a boyscout camp i helped pull the engine from a 1980 jcb backhoe so it could be rebuilt. ive been reading up and on how the engine works and i have a real good idea on how a diesel engine works. she thinks that you need to be borderline professional to go to school and learn a skill or trade

You sound like you got a good head on your shoulders and im sure u will pick up that "mechanical aptitude" it's not rocket science it can get complicated but as long as u can pay attention to detail you will be fine. Heck I'm not the sharpest tool in the shed but when it comes to fixing and wrenching I'm borderline genius lol.

Boces is a great time to figure out what's for you also. It's a free school for 2 years hands on training in a trade you pick. Like you found out already you worked with wood sense 7 now your applying it to jobs if anything like our schools building trades your probably building or remodeling a house. I'm guessing your not seeing yourself doing this as a career and diesel is looking more like you. Switch up take diesel next year if u like it ad see a future great run with it but at the same time if you get there and you say to your self hey this ain't for me either so what u haven't lost anything but the mornings of your senior year in highschool that most likely would be study hall anyways being your in boces anyways. Plus it's free I'd rather make the changes then rather then in trade school 30gs in the hole and realizing u just wasted a year of your life and a ton of money.

It's an industry in highdemand there's tons of job listings for techs on all levels so you won't have a problem finding work. Also cat engines are in everything and you can work your way up and be the tech with there new F450 trucks going out to farms working on combines or running to the construction site getting the equipment or generators back up and running you name it sky's the limit.

If you get into it and hate it, change it. You're young.

Your mom thinks that you don't know enough about it to be good at it?

Does she know what schooling is for?

No one goes to college knowing everything about what they want to do.

i will always work with wood but ive faced the facts, construction sucks these days and probably wont pick up in the 10 to 20 years. diesel is much more stable. i think id be a great diesel mechanic.

thats exactly what she thinks. i keep telling her she was not a chemist when she went to school to be a chemist

Tell your mother prior to coming to college I didn't know the difference between all the financial statements nor how to read one. Now I'm borderline genius at it! :eyebrows: Just because she thinks you are not "mechanical savvy" at it right now, doesn't mean you will be at end of the schooling. Then with experience and people teaching you, you'll become mechancial savvy. Working on big toys like that sounds cool. Best of luck, man.

Diesel techs make excellent money.

Wish we had more technicians around.

Follow your heart and brain.

Do what is right for you.

Don't let any negative people or talk sway you.

Good luck.
