pagliaroj Posted March 8, 2012 Posted March 8, 2012 So I picked up a used baitcaster on ebay and it definitely needs some maintenance. The guy at DSG sold me the Berkley Oil and Grease kit and said it should take care of the problem. My only question is, which do I use on it? I have never done this before and I looked up videos online so I know how to take the thing apart. But do I use the grease or the oil on it? Or both? Thank you in advance, because it is 60 degrees and sunny today, very unusual for upstate NY! Quote
TRYTOFISH Posted March 8, 2012 Posted March 8, 2012 grease the gears, oil bearings. completly cean everyting first Quote
Delaware Valley Tackle Posted March 8, 2012 Posted March 8, 2012 First off, make sure you have a schematic in front of you before disassenbling any reel. Keep close track of the order you remove parts as the schematic does not necessarily show the disassembly order. All the parts should be thoroughly cleaned and degreased using hot water and Dawn or Simple Green etc. The bearings should be flushed with acetone or carb/brake cleaner. The teeth of gears and meshing parts should get greased. sliding parts such as the clutch should be oiled or greased very lightly. bearings should get oil. One drop on the race for spool bearings. You can go a little heavier on crank and pinion bearings since they don't spin fast. Lightly oil the levelwind worm gear. Grease will collect dirt and gum up due to the exposed nature of the gear. The AR clutch can be flushed and oiled lightly with a swab. Don't go crazy with the lube. Less is more in most cases. 1 Quote
Super User .RM. Posted March 8, 2012 Super User Posted March 8, 2012 You can read/watch all the video/instruction you want on-line, but if you have never broken a reel down. Your best bet is to send it off to the site sponsor Mike @ DVT. Don't take a chance of losing a small part, or over lubricating, send it in. Good Luck & Tight Lines! Quote
Chris Wilson Posted March 8, 2012 Posted March 8, 2012 I say do it yourself. You'll never learn if you send it in. .RM. has a point though, if you have any doubt in your mechanical ability, send it in. Otherwise dive in. The first baitcaster i worked on had no schematics to be found online and it came to me as is, no box or anything. So i just laid out all the parts in order from outside to inside and left to right as i took them apart so i could visually put together in my head where they would go, including screws. I've done some daiwa, shimano and quantum, all easy. Just don't tear the entire thing down at once. Work on a section or side at a time. As others have said, grease on gears, oil on bearings. I grease my worm gear, others oil. Oil washes away faster so i lightly grease. Also, a drop of oil per handle paddle makes it smoother. Depending on the drag (do some research) it may be a dry system, or it may need some oil or grease depending. Quote
