Rangerphil Posted March 7, 2012 Posted March 7, 2012 I am always looking for a better way of organizing my soft plastics. I have tried ziplock bags and a few other things but nothing seems to work! By the middle of the season I have a mess and usually do not even know what I have after awhile. I would like something that I can open and know what I have and see it all. I would like to organize by type like worms, craws, finesse, etc... Thanks in advance for all the help! Quote
backcast88 Posted March 7, 2012 Posted March 7, 2012 I was in the same boat as you and finally had enough and went to BPS and bought a Plano ProLatch Deep 3630 and divided it right down the middle. I put them together by importance and color front to back. Now every time I go to the lake I just pull the box out and get my plastic and put the bow away. Works like a charm. Quote
Aluma-Bass Posted March 7, 2012 Posted March 7, 2012 if you look how most pros do it..they just have a large plastic container with all bags of plastics mixed with in seems like 1 Quote
Super User ww2farmer Posted March 7, 2012 Super User Posted March 7, 2012 For as many years as I have fished it seems like each year I tweak my soft plastic storage system. As of right now I have had the same, or close to it, way of doing things for 2-3 years now. I have several of the big deep 1 compartment Plano 3700 boxes. Each box has a few types of baits in it. For example, 1 box has, beavers, craws, and jig trailers, all in there factory packaging. Within that box the packs of beavers are all in zip lock bag, the craws in another, and the jig trailers in one as well. Same thing goes for other types of baits. I keep enough in these boxes for a "while", and they are stored within easy reach while fishing. When something is getting low I restock the boxes from bigger water proof plastic ammo type boxes that are stored in an out of the way place on the boat, or back home. Quote
SAC2 Posted March 7, 2012 Posted March 7, 2012 i like stowaway spinnerbait boxes. you can put 3 different types of baits in them and keep them somehwat organized Quote
Phranchise1213 Posted March 7, 2012 Posted March 7, 2012 I see you tried Ziplock Bags already but what didn't you like about it? When you buy your plastics, keep them in their original bags and then organize them into categories. Then put each category into a jumbo 2 gallon ziplock bags. You will be amazed at how many bags you can get into one of those. You can fit probably 2-3 times as many baits in a 2 gallon bag then you could fit in 1 plano 3600. Quote

A 2 Gallon bag is also a LOT bigger than a plano 3600. The advantages of using plano boxes is that it is very easy and fast to find the bait you are looking for. I don't feel like searching through 50 bags of beavers to find the bait I am looking for. It get's even harder when you have a color of a bait you are looking for but you have multiple colors for that bait. Every time you look inside your ziplock bag the arrangement of baits has changed. I can't waste time during a tourney. With my plano boxes I have them pretty much memorized and everything is easy to find. Works for me. Quote
Super User Fishes in trees Posted March 7, 2012 Super User Posted March 7, 2012 Be sure to use the zip lock freezer bags (or the wal-mart equivalent) They are a lot stronger plastic than the regular zip lock bags. Quote
Super User grimlin Posted March 7, 2012 Super User Posted March 7, 2012 How much of that plastic you actually use? i say invest in 2-3 binders for plastics.... http://www.basspro.com/Bass-Pro-Shops-Extreme-Single-Worm-Binder-Bag-or-Replacement-Pages/product/13318/197941 Something like this? Quote

Im glad it works for you, as a co-angler, and fishing from my kayak, my system works for me. I can probably find a green pumpkin beaver in my ziplock as fast you can find one in your plano. Rangerphil Posted March 7, 2012 Author Posted March 7, 2012 I have tried worm binders and did not care for them because one the sleeves were kind of cheap and hard to close and two they would not hold certain size bags. Ziplock bags started ok but I could not tell what I had all the time and then I found myself just throwing the packs on top of the bags and it would become a mess. I know some of you are going to say slow down when i am changing baits and what not but I am some what of a organizational freak and bags just do not fit me. I would like to grab a box or something like that and see what I have and be able to get it and put it back with minimal effort. Thanks for all the suggestions so far and keep them coming! Quote
Flukeman Posted March 7, 2012 Posted March 7, 2012 I use the Plano 3700 waterproof boxes. I label the outside of the boxes tubes, creatures, worms, finesse, etc. you just grab the box you need and you can see all of them. By the time I get to a tournament I already know what my main baits are going to be from my practice time. I will then take some extra bags of those and keep bags and all in a deep Plano box to refill from. I will also have some extra bags in my truck in a Rubbermaid tub for multiple day tournaments or week long trips. Quote
Super User grimlin Posted March 7, 2012 Super User Posted March 7, 2012 Get yourself some tubs from walmart for $1.97.They are the perfect fit to hold bait packages...That's what i use in my fishing room to store my plastics.Since I'm a shore fisherman, binders work well. I've learned to just take what I need and really cut back on trying to carry 20+ pounds of plastic every time I go out. The only thing is if you are a rage tail fan, you'll have to find the right size tub,or put them in sideways . The rage tail packages are much bigger than your normal packages from other lure companies. Quote
Ima Bass Ninja Posted March 7, 2012 Posted March 7, 2012 I keep them in original packages and then sort them by style (senko, finesse worms, flukes, etc..) in these containers and just mark them with a sharpie. Has made a world of difference storage wise in my boat. Also there's the added benefit that i have to empty the containers before i use them. Quote

Super User J Francho Posted March 7, 2012 Super User Posted March 7, 2012 FTO Speed bags for things that I use a lot. For storage, I get the tall 3700 size Plano boxes, and store the plastics in there, in their original bags. Quote
Super User .ghoti. Posted March 7, 2012 Super User Posted March 7, 2012 I use these. The double sided version. 10 bags per side. http://www.basspro.com/Bass-Pro-Shops-Finesse-Binder-Bags-or-Replacement-Pages/product/37109/45288 I have one that has senkos on one side and Ikas on the other. another with flukes on one side and tubes on the other another with straight tail worms on one side and curl tail worm in the other another with creature type baits in both sides another with big worms in both sides and one more I use as a day bag, with a little bit of everything 1 Quote
Phranchise1213 Posted March 7, 2012 Posted March 7, 2012 As a co-angler and a kayak fisherman, putting them in planos is a lot more organized when in your kayak or somebodies boat. Funny. I'm not going to defend why I like the system that I have. Like I said, through trial in error (which includes putting my plastics in boxes doesn't work well for me) I am already very organized and content with my current system. Thanks for your opinion though. Being organized with tackle is no different than being organized with anything else. You work through different systems until you find one you like and is a matter of personal preference. There is no right or wrong answer here. What might work good for you, doesn't for me and vice versa. Quote
SausageFingers Posted March 7, 2012 Posted March 7, 2012 Here's how I organize my plastics. I have multiple trays for creatures, craws, etc. I keep them all in my Spiderwire Wolf tackle bag. Quote
