ROCbass Posted March 7, 2012 Posted March 7, 2012 Colts expected to part ways with Manning after 14 seasons Hopefully Miami picks him up! http://www.nfl.com/n...fter-14-seasons Being on the wrong side of 35 and having all those neck problems, Manning is likely done IMO. That's not to say he won't try to find another team and get signed somewhere, but i have serious doubts he'll ever be anything close to the player he once was. That being said, I hope Miami picks him up too. Of course, being a Bills fan who thinks he is likely to fail, my reasons are probably different than yours. Quote
Super User ww2farmer Posted March 7, 2012 Super User Posted March 7, 2012 What a terrible, classless way for the Colts to handle this. How would you like to be a fan of that team. Going from a team that for the last decade plus was always a super bowl contender, to the number one pick in the draft, to showing the guy that made you that super bowl contender in less than one calander year. I hope Manning goes some where and makes another team a contender for 2-3 more years and finishes his career playing at a high level. I don't know if Luck will be any good as a pro, he probably will be great, but how bad will this be if he is a super bust, this is an all time dumb move by they colts. Quote
Super User NorcalBassin Posted March 7, 2012 Super User Posted March 7, 2012 Major bummer to see him not be able to finish with the same franchise... I hope he wins at least one more SB (hopefully with the Redskins). Quote
scrutch Posted March 7, 2012 Posted March 7, 2012 The shoes to fill just got a little bigger for Luck. I wouldn't want to be him right now. He will be coming into a situation where there will be virtually NO room for error. He better have some Tebow sized shoulders! Can you say "pressure"? Quote
Super User roadwarrior Posted March 7, 2012 Super User Posted March 7, 2012 Seems to me a little more creative negotiations could have come into play. Let's say $5mm bonus today with the balance paid through the season based on Manning's ability to play. $1mm per game and the balance at the end of the season. Quote
scrutch Posted March 7, 2012 Posted March 7, 2012 Right RW. Incentive-laden contract renegotiation. Quote
Super User Marty Posted March 8, 2012 Super User Posted March 8, 2012 We'll never know what happened. Maybe Manning was offered terms as suggested above and rejected them. In the meantime, the stories of what happens with Manning and what happens with the Colts will be fascinating to watch unfold. Quote
JoePhish Posted March 8, 2012 Posted March 8, 2012 I would now say that Miami is the best fit for him and I think he'll sign here if he's healthy. They also have the salary cap room to spare. If he brings Reggie Wayne along, which is a valid possibility, they'll have a sick offense with those 2 plus Marshall and Bush. Plus Jake Long is there at LT to protect his blind side. That defense is underrated too. They also have a new head coach, former Packer OC Joe Philbin, who like to throw the ball all over the field. Throw in the fact that his wife loves South Florida and they already has a condo nearby. He'll be the next in a line of superstars that want a part of South Beach (Lebron, Bosh, Reyes, et al). If he's not healthy he'll probably sign with Washington to milk Danny Snyder out of a paycheck like every other gimpy veteran does. Quote

I got a giggle at the fact that after the press conference today, he jumped on Irsay's plane and landed at the Opa-Locka airport a few hours later. I'd love to see Wayne playing back down here in front of the home team again also. Quote
scrutch Posted March 8, 2012 Posted March 8, 2012 MAYBE...the Colts released him only to re-sign him for a lower salary! I still haven't given up hope. Quote
Super User Marty Posted March 9, 2012 Super User Posted March 9, 2012 MAYBE...the Colts released him only to re-sign him for a lower salary! I still haven't given up hope. I think it would be great if he spent his entire career with the Colts, but I'd wonder if that were a possibility why it wouldn't have already been negotiated. Quote
Super User deaknh03 Posted March 10, 2012 Super User Posted March 10, 2012 Seems to me a little more creative negotiations could have come into play. Let's say $5mm bonus today with the balance paid through the season based on Manning's ability to play. $1mm per game and the balance at the end of the season. I would think Irsay tried to negotiate with Manning, have him be a mentor to Luck for a year or two. I think Manning wanted to be the top guy, with no youngster waiting behind him for his job, plus now he hits the free agent market and can dictate where he goes and some crazy team will over pay to get him. I believe Manning is the guy who left Indy, and Irsay didn't "boot" him out, Manning literally shot himself out of town, just quietly. Quote
Super User deaknh03 Posted March 10, 2012 Super User Posted March 10, 2012 The Colts also cut their best LB, Brackett their starting TE, Clark, and are taking offers on their best DE, Freeny. Now that Mannings gone, they are in complete rebuild mode. s a Pats fan, I will miss the rivalry. If I were an Indy fan, I might think about sleeping pills, so I wouldnt fall asleep crying every night. Quote
Super User deaknh03 Posted March 10, 2012 Super User Posted March 10, 2012 I forgot about the release of their starting RB, Addai, and a starting safety, Bullitt. Quote
Super User ww2farmer Posted March 11, 2012 Super User Posted March 11, 2012 You got to wonder if the colts can hit on two QB's in a row, the odds are against it. In fact very few teams have ever had success replacing there "legend" QB's right away with franchise level QB's. Off the top of my head the only ones I can think of are Rogers replacing Favre in GB, and Young replacing Montana in SF. But those two at least had sometime behind the guy they were replacing to learn from. Luck (or so we assume) is going in to a team in total rebuild mode. Look at some of the long, long struggles teams like Buffalo, Miami, and Denver have had replacing Kelly/Marino/Elway. They all thought they had there "guy" at times too. I am not wishing the Colts to fail (I only wish that on the Pats.) but betting the farm on a rookie and showing your best player the door is pretty risky. Quote
shootermcbob Posted March 11, 2012 Posted March 11, 2012 I think the fact that the colts were so terrible this past season gives an indication of how really, really good Peyton Manning is. The Colts are gonna miss him. He could read defenses extraordinarily well, got rid of the ball quickly to hide a horrible offensive (and I mean OFFENSIVE) line, and got the colts into plays to take advantage of what the defense was doing. Although everyone will have differing opinions, I think he is the best football player of his era...in as much as he has done way more with way less. Quote
