Super User clayton86 Posted March 6, 2012 Super User Posted March 6, 2012 Iv never encountered some one like this it blew my mind kinda like people never seeing snow before. My platoons FO(forward observer) is from the Bronx and yesterday in the field a grass hopper landed on him and he freaked out. Not that girls scream freak out it was just he didn't know what it was he had never seen a grass hopper befor! I was astonished like we got talkin and there were a ton of animals he had never seen befor being from the city his whole life of 21 years. He had never seen a bass or pike befor or a real deer. So we were all trying to catch critters and bugs to expose him to them. Iv never met some one that didn't know what animals were besides like sounds in the woods but once told they knew what it was this guy didnt know what a coyote was beside the Wiley one from loony toons. This is why I'm never moving to a city I want my kids to know what grass is and what howls at the moon not gun shots and screams in the night. Quote
Super User Bassn Blvd Posted March 6, 2012 Super User Posted March 6, 2012 Introduce him to a snake in his mess kit, LMAO. Quote
Super User Gatorbassman Posted March 6, 2012 Super User Posted March 6, 2012 I remember that when I joined to. My best friend in the Army was from DC and he was always asking me about animals. I would buy hunting and fishing magazines just so I could show him. Then I took him hunting. LOL. It was funny. I got three does to walk within 20 yards of us. I thought the little black kid was going to crawl out of his skin. Boy do I miss him. We had so much fun. Quote
Super User clayton86 Posted March 6, 2012 Author Super User Posted March 6, 2012 Yeah this kid cool he just got attached to us we like razzing him like all the new guys he takes it pretty good and dishes it right back. We were joking the only animals he sees in his hood are rats lol. That's one thing I do like bout the service is meeting people from all over the place. Quote
tipptruck1 Posted March 6, 2012 Posted March 6, 2012 MY dad told me about some inner city Chicago kids once. I am guessing he heard this from a friend. But these kids game to a meat packing plant to learn about what ever. I think some one asked the kids if they knew were there meat comes from. None of the kids could say were it came from. To me that is worst then a 21 year old not seeing a cricket or a coyote. Quote

That is pretty bad I think on of the guys here was like that he knew beef was an animal but didn't know it was a cow he though the animal was called beef...... Quote
tholmes Posted March 6, 2012 Posted March 6, 2012 I knew a guy that grew up in NYC and ended up doing his music therapy internship at a state-run psychiatric hospital where I worked at the time. He was kinda like the guys you all are describing. He had never seen a live chicken, cow, or pig. Once, when a couple of friends and I were talking about "roasting ears", he thought we were talking about real animal ears. He was also fascinated that he could drive 10 minutes from town and see the horizon in all directions. He had never seen the night sky the way it is out here in the middle of Kansas and was blown away by the number of stars that were visible, and he saw the Milky Way for the first time in his life. The flip side of these situations is, I'm sure I would be just as lost and bewildered in his home environment. Tom Quote
Super User Fishing Rhino Posted March 6, 2012 Super User Posted March 6, 2012 I think we'd all be surprised at what little we all see/experience of the wonders of nature. How many have seen the glow of a boats slipstream on inky black nights when salt water is full of phosphorus, or critters containing phosphorus that glow a brilliant green when disturbed. Or been on the bow of a boat and seen the comet like trails of schools of fish scattering from the boat's approach. One of the most splendid sights is seeing the sun rise out of the ocean in the morning and sinking back into it in the evening. The world is a marvelous place, full of breathtaking sights. Another interesting phenomena, visible on a color sounder on the ocean is the rise of photoplankton at first light. The bottom line remains, but a second begins to slowly rise from the bottom as the sky begins to glow in the east. It is photoplankton which is active only in the daytime. At the end of the day, they settle back to the bottom. The second line rises, then thins out as the photoplankton disperse themselves throughout the water column. Quote

I imagine these have been some of those "this is what it's all about" moments. Makes me wonder what it will be like when "all things will be made new". AWESOME! Quote
