Shouldn't matter, that's a saltwater safe finish, according to Quantum. Even if you don't rinse it right away it shouldn't have that sort of damage.

The things that I most often see with Quantum is not just superficial, they've got very weak worm gears, the bearing surfaces are very often not aligned properly and the clutch is somewhat lacking. I've had numerous instances in which a brand new reel's AR has gone out in a matter of days of fishing it. That said, the Tour KVD is likely one of the best mass market reels I've ever owned. I've had few issues with it in comparison to every other Q reel I've owned.

Understood. I just cant think of anything else that would cause that corrosive-like sore. The only other thing that comes to mind is a caustic solvent.

I fish Quantum Bait casters exclusively. I have fished Shimano, Pflueger, Diawa and ABU as well. My personal preferance is the Quantum. Have I ever had a problem with Quantums? Yes. I had/have a Kinetic which is my lowest priced model that I had a drag problem with. Quantums customer service replaced and I was happy with the service. I have Energy Pt's, Tour Editions and my favorite model which was discontinued is the Catlyst. Looking at my reels the Tour's do seem to fade and have boat rash, but they are also my oldest models. I use Pflueger spinning reels, because for the price I don't beleive there is a better reel out there.

That quantum was fished in fresh only and from a kayak - no corrosive chemicals.

I've fished Quantums exclusively for over 20yrs now. I have NEVER had a problem with them. I have about 20 reels right now ranging from Catalyst PT's to Tour Edition PT's and they have all performed flawlessly. No finish blemishes either. I love Quantum reels and will always fish them. I also use Quantum Tour Edition PT rods and they have been great as well.

I was told my Shimano to buy a better reel in their line up...

I believe it, some of their customer support staff are retards. I had one of their guys tell me to buy another brand rod since mine broke, and I did with St Croix, best advice I got

Can everyone on this forum say they have NEVER ever had a problem with a Shimano product? I dont care how good they are, you can get a dud in anything.

I had quite a few problems with the Curados. The first three I got had problems. I have one Curado now and it has worked great for over a year now. However, I have NEVER had a problem with any of my Calcutta reels. Including the DC I bought at the pawn shop. If you can kill a Calcutta i'll be impressed. Never tried any of Shimanos other series though. Im perfectly content with my tried and true Calcuttas.

As for the OP. I have had nothing but good luck with quantum reels. Especially the Smoke reels. They are a bit too light for my tastes, but they are still amazing reels.

Wow! Was that spool fished in saltwater?

I

First of all I'm going to apologize if I offend anyone as I don't mean too. I saw a spool on one of my reels that looked EXACTLY like that, and it wasn't caused by any corrosive. What happed to mine ( Which was a Pflueger Patriarch for those interested) was after I trailered the boat I was putting my tackle away and I dropped my rod and reel and the reel smashed off the side of the trailer and when I say it looked exactly like that I mean if that reel in the pic didn't have the rainbow deposition coating on it you would not be able to tell the difference. I have reels from 3 different brands and they all have some boat rash but that isn't wear or boat rash or even saltwater use, that reel was dropped on something hard like a trailer or perhaps a concrete ramp, it is chipped, wear doesn't make aluminum chip.

Same here, I had an Curado B back in the late 90's, it was the first LP baitcaster I ever had, up to that point I had only used round Abu Garcia reels. It gave me fits, was rough from about the 2nd time I used it, the store took it back, but the new one was just as bad and was sent back to Shimano 2 other times the first season. I gave up on it......and Shimano untill the D series came out. In that time I used just about every thing else, never had problems with anything made by Quantum, Daiwa, Pflueger, or Abu. The only other reels that have been BPS branded reels.............and......another Shimano, my Citica E got a little rough last year, but they fixed it.

I only have one Quantum reel, it is a Kinetic PT. I haven't had it very long but it has been great so far. I bought it because it was on sale at TW, for a good price. It keeps up just fine with my Revos, however I would trade it in a second for another Revo, I just love my Revos!!! The one reel I have that I don't particularly care for is a Curado 51E. It is just too small for me I think, dosen't feel right in my hands. Trade anyone? :eyebrows:

What do you want for it? I have a Revo S-L I would be willing to part with, plus some cash to make up the diff.

I prefer a reel with a selective anti-reverse because I like to back-reel or thumb the spool when playing a fish. I had a Quantam Pro Lite with a defective anti-reverse that I sent to the factory for repair. Parts were not available so the kept my old reel and sent a replacement--not selective ant-reverse--at the going rate. I was not upset about the new reel but was because they kept the old. I own at least a bakers dozen Shimano Bantam 150 and 250 reels with selective anti-reverse and fish more with them than my new reels. They aren't quite and smooth and don't cast quite as far as the newer reels, but hey, I'm an old dog.

I've been a loyal Shimano user for years and I'll be the first to tell you that I've fished with junk that had their name on it. Over time life got better and I could afford to pull the trigger on a Calcutta and it was then I discovered that the more you spend on a Shimano, the more you get. That reel works like a fine Swiss-made watch. I eventually purchased another and along the way I picked up 3 Calais reels. I can't speak for other brands, but when you are willing and able to fork over the bucks for Shimano's higher end reels you do get what you pay for.

I have never had any problems with my Quantum. It casts wonderfully with a wide range of baits. With that said I love my Calcutta's even more. They are so SMOOTH. I thought it was frowned upon to use round reels (ha ha).

I also own over 20 Quantum reels, combination of spinning and casting, various models. Some, but not all, have some sort of finish blemishes, boat rash etc...and frankly I don't care. I'm incredibly tough on my equipment and despite that, they continue to work. The fish can't see my reels......until they hit the boat that is.

I strayed last year and bought an Abu casting reel that was on sale at Tackle Warehouse, didn't like it one bit and had fits with it working properly.

I'll stay with Quantum!

I have 7 Quantum bait casters and 2 spinning reels and absolutely love them! Never had any issues with a single one! The plan is to buy more before bass season opens up here in Michigan. A Smoke or Exo is next on the list!

My only experience was with the KVD BPS version around 3 years ago. The reel is in a class of its own compared to the other 8 BC's I've picked up since then (Shimanos, Lews, and BPS PQ's), and I don't mean that in a good way. There is so much play in the spool that 12# mono gets caught/kinked and needs to be replaced far too frequently... that's just one of the recurring problems. I am sure that their higher end reels are much better, but one reel was enough for me.

Those I lump in the Abu silver max, Diawa strike force and laguna, Shiman Caius, Corvalus, and th Pflueger Criterion, these are all reels that will put a bad taste in the mouth of anyone unfortunate to use one after owning a good reel.

I bought the Tour edition PT VI when it went on sale for 150 during TW 12 days of christmas sale. Just tried it out in my canal and it seems really nice. Didn't catch anything haha, but casted very well with a 1/2oz spinnerbait. and 3/8oz bullet sinker. It will get put through it's paces come Guntersville.

There are also anglers that love their BPS KVD and Strike force and Caius, the point I was making is that those reels are in the same catagory, they are value priced reels, and while most perform well enough to fish the internal parts aren't the best which leads to a higher amount of failure compared to higher priced reels. While it is true that you can get a bad expensive reel or a great value reel, the odds of that happening are rare, and I don't mean that the value reel is doomed to failure, it is just they are designed to get 1 or 2 seasons due to the use of cheaper bearings and gears. Do you think an 8 ball bearing $200+ reel has the same bearings as a 10 ball bearing $79.99 reel? If they did the manufacturers would never be able to sell an expensive reel.

I saw the smoke spinning reel in the display case and had to give it a few turns. I thought the look was awesome, love the blacked out paint, but when i started reeling it i realized how cheap it felt. My $80 sahara is a smoother reel, my Ci4 is in a whole other world...

For baitcasters, i was shopping between quantum pt's, curado's, and revos. I thought the finish and smoothness totally went to the curado, ended up getting the 201e7, absolutely love it. Ive tried to like quantums but if im putting the money out its going to be a shimano with pflueger and abu at a close second...

I bought a KVD model and got 3 casts out of it before it locked up. Took it back for a refund and never looked back since. There are too many proven reels out there for me to experiment for myself. I now listen to the guys that have been doing this for longer than I've been alive. They have never been wrong yet!
