Clint C. Posted March 1, 2012 Posted March 1, 2012 Hey guys! Looking for some advice on a crankbait rod. I almost never use crankbaits and want to get better at it this year. I fish from shore and the reel I'm going to be using is a Curado 201e7. I will mostly be using shallow (0-5ft) and mid depth (8-15) crankbaits. Casting distance is more important to me than accuracy for what I'll be using this rod for. So far I'm looking at these 4 rods. Which do you think would be best and which model? If you have any other rods I don't have listed that you think might be good let me know, nothing over $120 though. Also what line do you like to use? Right now I have it spooled with #12 P-Line Florocarbon. Would something else give me better distance? Thanks in advance! BradH Posted March 1, 2012 Posted March 1, 2012 Of the rods you have listed I have only used the BPS Crankin' Stick. I think they are an awesome rod for the money. When I fish from the shore I'm always running into trees when i'm trying to cast so a 6'6" M or MH crankin' stick would be my pick. I'd shoot for a 6:1 reel for shallow/middle depth but that's just me. Quote
Super User ww2farmer Posted March 1, 2012 Super User Posted March 1, 2012 I am a St Croix fan, BUT........I would take the BPS Cranking stick out of that groups hands down, any day. I owned a 7' M Cranking stick a few years ago and it was just perfect for baits like Bandit 200's or 300's, SK series 3's, Wiggle warts, DT 4's and 6's, Lipless cranks that you were not ripping from grass...I wish I still had it. It's an OK rod with things like DT 10's and DD14's too, but completely over matched on DD22's, and the DT 16's I tried with it. I didn't like it for square bills. I like a shorter more powerfull rod, for tight heavy cover work, and a longer faster action rod for, the same kind of rod I use for ripping traps out of grass actually, for walking a square bill trough and over submerged grass. A 7:1 reel will be fine, you can always slow down. the only thing I use a 5:1 reel on is big deep cranks, and thats more for power and not speed. I find it easier to slow down a fast reel, than speed up a slow one. Quote
Clint C. Posted March 1, 2012 Author Posted March 1, 2012 Yeah, I've heard some great things about the BPS Crankin' stick. Do you think the 7'6 model would be too much for the shallower running crankbaits? Thanks for the advice guys =0) Quote
Super User smalljaw67 Posted March 1, 2012 Super User Posted March 1, 2012 I'm not a fan of glass rods, too heavy so I would opt for the crankin stick but why not the Falcon BuKoo? The 4-14 is rated for lures up 1/2oz and is a pretty decent rod for the price and is less the 4oz. Quote
bassh8er Posted March 1, 2012 Posted March 1, 2012 I've got a Crankin' stick and it's great for the money, and all around actually. I picked up another Skeet Reese S-glass cranking rod and it was ok, but I sold it to put money towards a new Shimano Compre crankin' rod, and I don't regret that choice at all. Quote
Clint C. Posted March 1, 2012 Author Posted March 1, 2012 I am definitely not opposed to checking out something I didn't list. The lighter the better for me too. Thanks for the suggestion! Packard Posted March 2, 2012 Posted March 2, 2012 I own the 7'8" MH Mojo Glass and the 6'6"MH KVD Cranker. The KVD rod isn't bad, it is pretty light but is graphite. The Mojo is really heavy but is a deep crank and lipless crank rod. Quote
Clint C. Posted March 2, 2012 Author Posted March 2, 2012 That's the other thing. Am I going to be losing a lot of sensitivity with a graphite rod compared to a mixed like the Crankin' Stick or the S Glass etc? From everything I've read the glass rods are good for feeling the vibration of the bait but not as sensitive as determining what type of cover the lure is hitting. Quote

Crappiebasser Posted March 2, 2012 Posted March 2, 2012 I have 2 St Croix Premier crankbait rods and love them both. i have the 7'M and the 7'H. I think the Curado E7 is too fast though. I use an E5 on the heavy rod and a Curado B (6.2) on the lighter rod. Quote
Super User SoFlaBassAddict Posted March 2, 2012 Super User Posted March 2, 2012 The BPS cranking stick is d**n hard to beat for the price. I've owned several and never had a complaint with them. I've still got one left on my rack that sees pretty regular use. I prefer a shorter rod for shallow cranks. I've used the 7' MH for quite a while with squarebills and traps. It definitely can handle larger and deeper lures as well. Quote
Clint C. Posted March 2, 2012 Author Posted March 2, 2012 Well thanks again for all of the responses. Everyone has been a huge help. I'm heading to BPS tomorrow. I'll let you guys know which I come home with! Quote
Clint C. Posted March 2, 2012 Author Posted March 2, 2012 Well I looked at a lot of rods today and ended up with the crankin' stick. I bought the 7'MF. Thanks for all of the help! Quote
Super User retiredbosn Posted March 3, 2012 Super User Posted March 3, 2012 I think you will be happy with your choice. I've have two Crankin Sticks very satisfied with them. I also I had one St Croix Mojo, the mojo is not a good example of the St. Croix line. Bottom line is that the rod is a dog, a dead dog, I've had broken rods with more sensitivity. On the other end of your crankbait set up, you will have to turn the handle of your E7 really slow, it is way to fast for lipped crankbaits. If you don't you will find that your crankbaits will not run true or they will roll. I hated crankbaiting until someone took the time to show me that the problem was my reels, at the time the slowest reel I had took up 28" of line, to be effective you need to be down to around 21-23 inches of line per turn. For me it is easier to speed up than slow down. Good luck Quote
Clint C. Posted March 3, 2012 Author Posted March 3, 2012 Thanks, maybe that is one of my major problems, reeling too fast. I'll have to test out how slow to turn to get into the 21-23" range. Appreciate it! Quote
