Help, Rod And Reel For Cranks/lipless

looking for a new cranking rig but just can't decide.. what reel in 5:4.1 under $170 and what rod under $150 would you guys recommend?

Help us, help you. What length rod do you want? Is this more of an all purpose cranking set up, or do you want to do specific things with it? I don't rip lipless baits out of grass with the same set up I deep crank with.

Yea I guess you could say an all purpose.. 15-20 feet is the deepest it will probably ever see and that would probably be seldom.. Id say a 7' medium/mod is in the range I'm looking.. I've been seeing a lot about the lamiglas rods but I'm open to any suggestions you more seasoned fisherman would have to offer.

Well if you want to fish baits that hit 15'-20' deep with a 7' M power rod..........I won't talk you out of it, best I can say is have fun, you will soon realize your mistake. Not that it can't be done, but you can also pound a nail in with a pipe wrench, it's just not the tool for the job.

as you can see I obviously don't know much about the right equipment which is why I'm askin for other peoples opinions and open to any suggestions. I was expecting help not some smart remarks. None the less thanks for the help bass resources..

I am not giving you a smart remark. I gave you my opinion, which you asked for. I can only comment on the equipment I own and what I use it for, I don't have what I would call a "general purpose" cranking set up. If you truly want that, some one else will have to help you. Now if your talking tossing deep divers.............I can tell you what I use and why, if you don't like what I say, there is a search function here, type "crankbait rod " in and then read all you ever wanted to know and more.

O.o hmm. Ok nothing too specific then. Just a general all purpose rod. I intend to buy an SX as an all purpose cranker now I just need an all purpose stick..

ww2farmer isn't trying to be a smart a**, just not giving you an opinion on something he can't vouch for. A lot of members have more than one rod for cranking. I have a 6'6" M/M for shallow to mid depth cranks and a 7'8" MH/M for deep and big lipless cranks. For ripping lipless cranks I will go to a 6'6" or 7"0' MH rod. The rod I have in my hand in the most is the 7'8" MH/M St Croix Mojo Bass Big Cranker. It is a great glass rod although it is heavy. I can throw any crank on it but other rods will do the job better for specific cranks.

Now for your decision. I like a 6.2:1 for my cranks because it allows me to reel fast or slow easily. IF your price range is around $320 for both as it seems in your first post, then I would spend a little more on the rod than the reel. I would get a Lamiglas XCF705 as your rod. That can throw almost all the cranks you need well and spinnerbaits! For the reel I would look at the Shimano Citica 200G in 5.5:1 or 6.5:1 as well as the Lew's reels. Those reels are all nice, I own a Tournament Pro but have fished others. Just pick the one that fits your budget. Good luck fishing and welcome to Bassresource!

Any time I throw cranks whether lipless or lipped I like to use a 7' medium power rod with a moderate action. This can be achieved a couple different ways. You can get a rod that is graphite with a moderate action, you can get one of the newer graphite-blends that is going to be a moderate action or you can go with a glass rod that is going to give a moderate to slow action. I talk about the action of the rods because any time I use treble hooks I like the moderate/slower action to prevent the likely hood of pulling the hooks out on a premature hook set. Faster action rods when used with crank baits tend to lead to poor hook ups if not used properly.

The comments above aren't off base nor do I feel they are rude. I believe your mis-understanding of the replies is based on the fact that you asked a very general and non-specific question.

Such a question such as I want to throw 1/2 ounce lipless crank baits into heavy cover using braid is going to get a totally different answer than I am planning on throwing 1/8 once lipless cranks into river current. Maybe a little more info or specifics on your part may help with the answers. Good luck in your search.

I've used an SX for cranking and lipless and it worked great. Make sure you mail in your $30 rebate form. The rod I am using now for lipless crankbaits is a 6'9" MH Kistler Micro Magnesium. It has the back bone to get the baits through the weeds and the tip is soft enough to not rip the bait from the fishes mouth. You could also use the rod for deep diving crankbaits if you needed too or jerkbaits. It's a good all purpose rod if you dont want to buy 6 different rods for specific applications. Tackle warehouse has some kistlers on sale right now.

I have multiple rods/reels/line combos for different kind of cranks. If I had to pick one size to accommodate most cranks, I would probably go for a 7'4" med/mod rod.

I throw my lipless cranks with a 7'4" St. croix mojo bass glass rod. I however do not have rip the lure from any grass. I use this rod as my "all-around" cranking rod. I rarely throw any lure over 5/8 ounce and mostly crank in the 6-10 feet depths.

I use a shimano curado 200E5 reel mostly on this rod.

Just a tip for you as far as the forums here go... A great group of guys are here, and all are willing to help you. Some folks have a very direct approach. Do not take offense, rather spend some time here and learn from all. When you ask a question, you will likely get many different opinions. It is then your job to take what folks have kindly suggested and use that information to fit your fishing style and location.

I use a 7ft Powell Endurance MH and a 7ft MH Ethos for my deep divers. Both have Calcutta reels loaded with 20lb spiderwire flourobraid.

Medium depth cranks I use a 7ft M Ethos, a 7ft Powell Endurance MH/F, and a 6ft 6in M Ethos. Two have Calcutta reels loaded with 12lb suffix deep cranking line. The 6ft6in has a bps pq loaded with 20lb spiderwire stealth line.

For Shallow cranking I use 2 7ft ethos rods. Both with Calcutta reels loaded with 20lb spiderwire Flourobraid.

For lipless cranks in grass I use a 7ft MH TDZ. With a TDZ BBS loaded with 20lb Flourobraid.

For everything else lipless related I use one of my medium depth rods and one of my shallow depth rods.
