msolorio Posted March 1, 2012 Posted March 1, 2012 just wondering if this would be good. i know a lot guys like 7:1 ratio reels for flippin/pitchin but just curious about usin it for jigs, anywhere from deep water to pitchin. i ask cus ive heard that you lose winching power with high speed reels. any facts, opinions, or suggestions are welcome. thanks guys. Wild Bill [NY] Posted March 1, 2012 Posted March 1, 2012 I got rid of all my slow, 'purportedly cranking reels' and now use either 6.3/1 or 7/1 for all my bass fishing. If you need more winching power, it's time you get out to the gym. When that big ol Bass grabs your jig and starts swimming right out towards your boat in deeper water, you neeed that speed to catch up to him to get a good hookset on him. Quote
Delaware Valley Tackle Posted March 1, 2012 Posted March 1, 2012 The rod should be the main tool to fight and move the fish. There's really no need to winch fish in. I like fast reels for short line situations where a fish can pick up the bait and swim right at you putting slack in the line. Also for burning baits and getting buzzbaits on plane quickly. You can do the same with a 6.x:1 it's just a little more work. 2 Quote

BradH Posted March 1, 2012 Posted March 1, 2012 I'll use a 7:1 for any fishing where I move the bait with the rod, not the reel. I stuck a Curado E7 on a jerkbait rod this winter and I love it. Quote

The rod is for moving the fish, the reel is just for collecting that line so you can move the fish again! 7.1 for all my jig fishing. Quote
