EasternPAfisherman Posted September 14, 2009 Posted September 14, 2009 Quantum tenacity baitcast rod/ reel combo. can I use it without snapping the rod? I have 12# spiderwire mono. but anyway, do you guys think it will work? or my dad has 17# mono, should I put a leader with 17 # test? Quote
Super User Dan: Posted September 14, 2009 Super User Posted September 14, 2009 what is the lure weight rating that is written on the rod? How much does the bait weigh? There is your answer. I would guess that the bait would exceed the rod's rating by too much. I believe it weighs 2.6oz without any of the weights in it. I would throw it on at least 17lb mono. Spool the whole reel with it, not just a leader. Quote
Super User KYntucky Warmouth Posted September 15, 2009 Super User Posted September 15, 2009 Probably not gonna last long, I had trouble throwing mine on a 7'H Kistler Magnesium, I then threw it on a 7'6''H Castaway flipping stick but was still very weary. After about three casts you'll understand why swimbaiters use the gear they do. Quote
Mattlures Posted September 15, 2009 Posted September 15, 2009 Its not that the rod will break. Its that the rod will handle the bait poorly. It will be dificult to make good cats, even more difficult to set the hook and it I doubt it has the bckbone to winch a good fish in. If you give a bass too much time with a big heavy bait, it will find a way to throw it. Under powerd rods can "do" the job, they just dont do a good job. Quote
Captian Planet Posted September 29, 2009 Posted September 29, 2009 Also try 15-25 lb florocarbon its less visible and with swimbaits your going for the natural look. Quote
angler1 Posted September 29, 2009 Posted September 29, 2009 check the weight of the lure, then look on the rod to see the max. lure weight. Quote

Would also like to add that if in the event you you get any type of lockup or backlash while trying to "lob" that thing your light line will instantaneously snap and you'll watch your bait sail into the horizon.
