ChiCityBasser Posted February 27, 2012 Posted February 27, 2012 Me and my brother made our trip to the BPS classic in Portage, Indiana to check out the the reels we both were interested in purchasing. We traded our reels in and got our trade in vouchers and proceeded to check out the reels. I was interested in the Quantum Smoke 25 and he wanted the new Abu Garcia Orra S and one other reel. The Quantum was my first Choice and the Pflueger was my second choice. I checked with a salesperson and the Quantum Smoke 25 & 30 were both sold out, even the display models were sold. My brother ended up getting the Orra S display model in the 20 size but his other reel was out as well. I checked out the Pflueger and thought it was nice but really wanted the Quantum and after handling it 3-4 times ended up getting the Pflueger in the 9230 size. I read a couple reviews and the Pflueger seems to be a very nice reel and very very light reel with both a braid ready spool and regular spool, I'll put it through its paces once it has some line added as it will be mounted on my plastics rod which is a Cabelas XMLTi 6'9' M/F. I still may get the Quantum but feel good about the Supreme XT Anyone else run in BPS being out of a reel they wanted? Quote
Super User J Francho Posted February 27, 2012 Super User Posted February 27, 2012 Nope. Came home with three new Chronarchs. =) Quote
dag623 Posted February 27, 2012 Posted February 27, 2012 Wanted 7.1:1 Johnny Morris Signature, they didn't have, but they had 6.4:1 so no biggie I guess... They should do trade at time of purchase in case they don't have what u came for. Kinda shady the way they have it set up when u really think about it... Quote
Super User J Francho Posted February 27, 2012 Super User Posted February 27, 2012 Kinda shady the way they have it set up when u really think about it... You could call ahead and check on their inventory. Besides, it's for charity - nothing shady there. Quote
ChiCityBasser Posted February 27, 2012 Author Posted February 27, 2012 You could call ahead and check on their inventory. Besides, it's for charity - nothing shady there. True I should have but you can always get the manager to initial the trade in voucher for out of stock items to get your trade in discount at a later time. My brother did it last year and this year for the reels he wanted. They honored the trade in amount when they did have the reel in stock. Quote
Super User J Francho Posted February 27, 2012 Super User Posted February 27, 2012 What is shady was all the broken reels and garbage people were bringing. What I brought were old, but they were 100%. Quote

Shady that they give u a coupon for the reel when u walk in the door. You think they don't know that you're not gonna go back and ask for your reel back if they dont have what u want? They are a business with a marketing department after all, and know what they are doing... I mean, it is cool that those reels go to the kids and all, but if they were doing it for the charity, they could donate some new ones no??? Also get a nice write off I'm sure as well... Quote
Super User J Francho Posted February 27, 2012 Super User Posted February 27, 2012 No one is forcing you to do it. You can pay more somewhere else. Quote
Super User QUAKEnSHAKE Posted February 27, 2012 Super User Posted February 27, 2012 You dont have to trade-in your reel first. I have the old gold and the new SXT (30 size) they are sweet reels you will like it. A number of times Ive left BPS empty. I did manage to get the JM Carbonlite 7:1 reel thought his time. On the trade-in I was concerned about the same if they didnt have the reel what then. So I went in first checked to see if they had JMC yes, had them hold it for me THEN went to my car and got my trade. Too they have cheap $5 reels on hand to purchase/trade in. Quote

dag623 Posted February 27, 2012 Posted February 27, 2012 No one is forcing you to do it. You can pay more somewhere else. Wanted the BPS Morris Sig so I had one option only, BPS. As for calling ahead, you are absolutely 110% correct. However, I would have then been running the risk of driving two hours to find that a sales guy that I didnt speak to on the phone had sold the reel to a friend, which our sales guy told us had happened to himself when he went to get the reel he set aside for a customer and came back empty handed... Dont get me wrong, I think BPS is great, just question the reel trade in process is all... I own the clunn from a few yrs back, and it still treats me well, so I stand by their product. If they don't have the reel in that you want as I said you can always get a salesperson/manager to initial the trade in voucher and get your discount once the reel arrives. Almost did that actually chi... Just that we live 2 hrs away, and the guy told us they couldnt ship to us and we would have to make the drive back, so we got the 6.4 which I rationalized that I would be getting more power and not really sacrificing too much line recovery (hey I had to tell myself something right? lol)... The Rooster Posted February 28, 2012 Posted February 28, 2012 I went this past weekend. Almost took one of my old Extreme reels to trade on a new Pro Qualifier. Had $100 to spend in the store only, and I wanted a lot of new tackle so I purposely left my reel at home so when I got there no matter how much I liked the PQ I wouldn't have a reel to trade on it and I'd spend my money where I knew it needed to be spent. 1 Quote
MSAJAA Posted February 28, 2012 Posted February 28, 2012 They will let you walk in with your old reels without doing the trade if you are undecided we did it Quote
RyneB Posted February 28, 2012 Posted February 28, 2012 I wanted a Revo SX. They were all sold out, so i settled for a Revo S, which is fine because i already own 6 of them. I was actually glad i didnt get the SX, i ended up getting a Veritas rod and got a $25 rebate for buying a Abu rod and reel. So i saved money for a rod by not getting the more expensive SX. 1 Quote

Super User NorcalBassin Posted February 28, 2012 Super User Posted February 28, 2012 Nope. Came home with three new Chronarchs. =) I only walked away with one... trying to make myself stay within a fixed budget this year after significantly upgrading all my gear last year. Couldn't resist that type of deal on the Chronarch though. Bummer about the low stock. I am fortunate enough to have Fri-Sun off, so I always make a point of going Friday morning when everything is still in stock. I've heard they're pretty bone dry by the last day of the trade in. It will be interesting to see how the rod trade in goes this weekend. Quote
rubba bubba Posted February 28, 2012 Posted February 28, 2012 I went to grab a couple of the new Johnny Morris Carbonlites (lefty) - they were sold out (both righty/lefty) so I got the rain check. They arrived yesterday resulting in a wait of 4 calendar days (I went on Fri morning). The engineering on these is much better than I was expecting; a definite steal. Quote

True and after reading the reviews on T_ it's a better choice than the Stradic CI4 the salesman also had me take a look at and spooling it up this weekend. Quote

Super User Hi Salenity Posted March 1, 2012 Super User Posted March 1, 2012 I went to my BPS on the second day of the reel trade. I KNEW they'd be out of the new Carbonlites so I didn't bring a reel to trade in. Sure enough they were sold out and had no idea when they'd get more in. So on the last day of the trade I called and they had a stack of them back in stock. I had them hold one of them for me, they said they could only hold it for 24hrs but I had it picked up in 1 hr. I was also surprised they had some 51e left. Quote
ChiCityBasser Posted March 1, 2012 Author Posted March 1, 2012 I take their reviews with a huge grain of... It wasn't a review by one of the TW staff but people who had used both reels but of course everyone is subjective in the opinion of a product, I mean I like Fords and Quantums :eyebrows: Quote
