Fish Finder For Kayak

I want a fish finder on my kayak and I was wondering what the best one is for kayak fishing. I would like something in the $100-$150 price range.

I have a Humminbird max 170, it was cheap and gets the job done. It shows me the bottom and underwater structure which is what I wanted it for. I dont always trust it when it shows me fish.....I used a through Hull install using a well that I add water to.

Definitely take a look at the Lowrance Elite 4 series. Persoanlly, I cannot go without GPS. I actually pick that feature over color, which also a big plus.

I have an Hbird 170 that works well. My OC is designed to use the transducer through the right scupper hole and it has a special place up front with a lid as a sun shield. The 170 is black and white so the battery lasts longer than a color FF.

Be aware if you use a vinyl covered dumbbell for an anchor. The FF will false indicate a constant school unless the anchor is on the bottom.

It helps to attach a quick connect (SAE connector) with a foot of wire to the battery so you can leave the blade terminals on the battery undisturbed and just unplug the quick connect for charging. I tie wrapped the wire to the battery so it doesn't come loose.

I would check out the Lowrance Mark-4 its the b&w version of elite-4 and is closer to your price range.

I've got a Garmin Echo 100, did not have the extra $$ to go another step up. If I had $100-150 to spend, I'd look at the Garmin echo 150, or Garmin echo 200, if I could up that price a little more I'd look at the Lowrance Elite 4 series. The Mark 4 are nice as well. I chose Garmin because the trolling motor mount was included, but I'm not using my trolling motor for now. Lowrance, Humminbird are the big boys, Garmin's coming along nicely.

I don't fish big waters so haven't yet found a "need" for GPS. Maybe I would if I had it, don't know. I would love at least one of the new Lowrance DSI units.

Depending on your yak you can build yourself a nice mount + arm for the entire unit for $25-30. Or buy one at several online or local kayak retailers.
