Super User LgMouthGambler Posted February 27, 2012 Super User Posted February 27, 2012 So going to the Classic sale at BPS this weekend, I was originally looking for the Shimano Caenan. Since posting of the possible purchase, some have made valid points of not purchasing due to the frame. While looking at the other reels that were on sale, came across the new BPS Extreme reel. Seen it, but never really checked it out. My wife has the older model, and what a vast improvement on design and quality in this thing. Sale was from $79.95 to $59.95, also has a reel trade in that saved $10, and a $25 gift card, and about $20 in BPS points. Not a bad deal. So since I had a few extra $$ from making that good deal (the wife was very pleased, since we are cutting budgets a bit), I was able to pick up some Mono to put on my new Spook reel. I decided to go with Spiderwire mono (I just like their braid, so stuck with it). Also, since we are trying to keep expenses down, on my regular user, Revo SX, was going to not use braid anymore (since I use it soo much, I go thru it like crazy). I figured Id go with a Flouro, and picked up the YoZuri Hybrid in 20lb test. This should be strong enough, since this rig is mostly used around town in local canals. Ive heard some good things about this line, has anyone ever used it before? It was a really good price for the amount of line. Tried it out today, and it didnt give me any backlash issues. For being 20b, it was still able to cast a 6" Zoom lizard, on a 3/0 widegap, and a 1/32oz weight very far, and very effortlessly. Quote
Super User BASSclary Posted February 27, 2012 Super User Posted February 27, 2012 Holy Hallibut !!! #20 Yo-Zuri! I love the stuff, but you dont need 20#. The 12# breaks at something like 22 pounds. But anyways, if you like to use low brakes (2 cent. on, 4 off.) Your going to hate the new extreme. It has 4 brakes on all the time (hence hardly any backlashes, very user friendly), and you can't turn them off. And the mags are just regular mags, not like Daiwa where the cup goes in and out. Don't want to poop on your parade, but I dont think those new reel (of that style) are that great. Quote
guitarkid Posted February 27, 2012 Posted February 27, 2012 another way to cut costs on line is to use BPS's excel mono, I think it is $20 for 3300 yards of 14# test. -gk Quote
Ima Bass Ninja Posted February 27, 2012 Posted February 27, 2012 Sounds like you got some good products. But I will agree with BC that 20# yo zuri will be stout. I have some 15 but never used it cause 12 has always been good enough. Also it's not a flurocarbon. It's a copolymer line that is more abrasive resistant and less stretch than Mono but no where near flouro and doesn't have the invisibly either. However it is some great line and will treat you well. Have fun with those new Purchases and don't forget to post some picks when you get to use em!! Quote
drew4779 Posted February 27, 2012 Posted February 27, 2012 The yozuri is tough as nails but I would have to replace it often due to the memory. I meant to try some line conditioner but I become easily distracted upon entering any tackle shop and always forget to pick some up. 1 Quote
Georgia Jeff Posted February 27, 2012 Posted February 27, 2012 The extreme looks like a pretty nice reel, I held it today. I love the handle and the v shaped spool. For $49 it can't be beat. I liked the way it felt better than the new curado. I'm sure it isn't made quite as nice but for the money I would rather have the extreme. Quote

I fish a lot of heavy cover down here, and a lot of snakeheads too. I usually use 65# braid, so I figured the 20 should be OK. I havent casted the Extreme yet, but the Pro Qual has similar braking to it, so we shall see if its decent. Heck, for the money I actually paid for it, cant be that bad, its replacing a ProLite that was garbage. Quote
Super User LgMouthGambler Posted February 27, 2012 Author Super User Posted February 27, 2012 Abu with YoZuri (large bore, haha), Extreme 17lb Mono Quote

You can turn them all the way off if you choose. You cant do that with the Extreme. And I'd expect the extreme to be on par with the prolite, no more, no less. The ProLite seemed to be the test run for the extreme but with a higher bearing count. But you are right, for what you paid it is a good deal Quote

I cut off two, on opposite sides of each other. Now only two pins are always on. Made a big improvement. Do This at your own risk.... Quote
POPRG Posted February 28, 2012 Posted February 28, 2012 Gambler, like others have said, that 20# hybrid is gonna be tough on that reel.!! i went down from 15# to 12# and even 10# on a flippin/jig set-up and have never broken off on mats or timber.iv'e straightened hooks on a steady pull w/ 15#! its not 100% flouro, has some more stretch to it,but is a great line. Super User LgMouthGambler Posted February 29, 2012 Author Super User Posted February 29, 2012 I took the SX for a little study break, head clear 30 minute fishing break in my canal. For 20# its really smooth, an I have no troubles casting it, even with wind. Im an avid braid fisherman, and have always gotten fustrated fishing mono and fluoro. This Yozuri stuff has won me over. to tell you the truth POPRG, I was gonna go 15#, but the diameter difference was so minute, I just took the 5# for the .01# difference. I caught 2 bass, both about the 4# range, and was very satisfied with the way the line handled. Its almost the closest thing I can get to braid like quality in a fluoro style line. Sensitivity is great, and even when the fish tried to take me under some cover and rocks, it held up very well. AND ITS SOO CHEAP! Quote
The Rooster Posted February 29, 2012 Posted February 29, 2012 I looked at those new Extremes, and while I really like the overall feel of the reel the "always on" centrifugal brakes were a deal breaker for me. I need 2 brakes at the least, but I just can't justify doing damage to a reel to make that happen. Hope the Pro Qualifier doesn't go this route, but I'm fairly sure that the model the way it is is nearing the end of it's run. It will probably have a change made for 2013. Notice there are no Pro Qualifier rods this year. Quote

POPRG Posted March 1, 2012 Posted March 1, 2012 I hear ya gambler,i'm an avid braid user too,but that hybrid is good stuff.i can set a hook with confidence unlike most of the flouros iv'e tried in the past.if the 20# is treating you good, then go stick some hogs without worries!! Just dug up a filler spool of 12# smoke that i'm gonna put on a curado for some early season trap/jerk baits and light jigs. Quote
Super User LgMouthGambler Posted March 1, 2012 Author Super User Posted March 1, 2012 Jerk baits are getting some good action down here lately. Quote
