ALbasser Posted September 22, 2009 Posted September 22, 2009 I have seen several lures lately with a coffee scent. I have fished with garlic, salted, wierd fish smells, and even some bait that smell like liqourice but coffee is a first. Have there been any tests to prove coffee as a productive scent, or is it simply another smell used to cover human scent? It is kind of a nice change to smell a latte when rigging up instead of warding off vampires
aarogb Posted September 22, 2009 Posted September 22, 2009 I think Strike King has coffee scent exclusivley. I think most scents are used to mask human scents rather than attract fish. Just my opinion though.
Super User Bassn Blvd Posted September 22, 2009 Super User Posted September 22, 2009 Coffee scent has been around for YEARS. I posted a thread a long time ago about old timers soaking their worms in a pot of coffee.
Super User iceintheveins Posted September 22, 2009 Super User Posted September 22, 2009 I heard before that coffee scents could be a turn off to fish. So you guys who fish the coffee plastics do really well then? Seems like it from the posts.
ab8aac Posted September 22, 2009 Posted September 22, 2009 well lets see, since I have been fishing the ragetail coffee scented baits, I won our local bass club tournament with my first limit on the rage tails and I caught about 15 fish that was in the slot limit that I had to throw back, then I went out on monday and caught 24 fish with only rage tail baits, so I think the coffee scent is NOT a turn off to fish.
Super User Shane J Posted September 22, 2009 Super User Posted September 22, 2009 MMMMMM..... plus when you get in your vehicle, and you have 5 rods rigged with new Rage Tails, it smells like Starbucks!
SoFl-native Posted September 22, 2009 Posted September 22, 2009 Why in the world would a bass be attracted to coffee? I mean use your head, and be smarter than the lure marketers. Strike king is the master of marketing lures that catch fishermen. Hook, line and sinker. They have always had brilliant marketing campaigns. I commend them for that. But if you catch fish on rage tail baits its not because a bass smells a grande latte in the hydrilla. sorry.
CHEVYRIDAZ Posted September 22, 2009 Posted September 22, 2009 I've done well with the rage tails. X2
endless Posted September 22, 2009 Posted September 22, 2009 MMMMMM..... plus when you get in your vehicle, and you have 5 rods rigged with new Rage Tails, it smells like Starbucks! now we're talking. but i to enjoy the rage tails and caught fish on kvd 7" ochoo coffee scent.
Jeff C. Posted September 22, 2009 Posted September 22, 2009 I hand pour & have some guys that ask for coffee scent & they do well with it... it smells great.. the best one for the bait maker to have to smell while making the baits..some scents are hard on the eyes & nose for the maker.
Super User iceintheveins Posted September 23, 2009 Super User Posted September 23, 2009 I need to try the ragetail shads.
looking4structure Posted September 23, 2009 Posted September 23, 2009 Rage Tails have worked really well for me.So have some of the KVD perfect plastics.
tnhiker44 Posted September 23, 2009 Posted September 23, 2009 Why in the world would a bass be attracted to coffee? I mean use your head, and be smarter than the lure marketers. Strike king is the master of marketing lures that catch fishermen. Hook, line and sinker. Well here in central Georgia most of our lakes are lined with coffee bushes. Well, some are lined with licorice trees. Oh, and some are lined with garlic bushes too. I wonder who believes in talking gecko's or that some lady's son, named Rip, is on line toot...... Ain't marketing grand?
Stringjam Posted September 23, 2009 Posted September 23, 2009 There is so little rational objectivity when it comes to bass fishing. I dont' have anything against scents, and I'm not saying they don't possibly work in some regard, but I've done just as well with plain unscented plastic - whether hand-poured or old-school plastic that had nothing in it - - and I went through a phase where I used everything out there religiously. I would catch a fish on something and think "Yeah, it's all about scents....look how well I'm doing!" .....only to catch as many or more when I returned to fishing plastics without it. I've pulled bass all the way to the boat before they'll release an old Bobby Garland hula-grub, which is pure plastic without salt or any form of scent. Does that mean that bass love the taste of plastic, too? ;D
deadeye32. Posted September 23, 2009 Posted September 23, 2009 i read somewhere a while back that some guys from strike king were out fishing and someone who was drinking coffee took a drink that had coffee grounds still in it. He spit it in the water and bluegills and baitfish came up instantly and started hitting the coffee grounds and thats how it originated.

Same here. Some of those scents flat out stink up the place. I like to use Upperhand Scents coffe/shad scent. It is a great scent and I get a ton of requests for it.
fisin green Posted September 23, 2009 Posted September 23, 2009 well what ever they smell like they do have nifty colors
Super User roadwarrior Posted September 23, 2009 Super User Posted September 23, 2009 I'm fishing with several Rage Tail baits with the coffee scent. The jury is still out, but the lures are HOT whether it's coffee, JJ's Magic or MegaStrike! 8-)
Super User Paul Roberts Posted September 23, 2009 Super User Posted September 23, 2009 In re-reading the parts about scents of Keith Jones book, "Knowing Bass", (for a related thread), I found this paragraph: "Other bass offending substances used by anglers include...It is suspected, but not known, that bass also (minnows do) find nicotine offensive. Caffeine is believed to believed to taste bitter to fish in general." But, I've caught bass on Coffee Tubes -I like the size and two-tone 'color' pattern they offer. In this kind of question I pretty much find Stringjam's experiences similar to my own.
Super User roadwarrior Posted September 23, 2009 Super User Posted September 23, 2009 Tennessee bronzebacks have a strong preference for smokes with their beer and whiskey! I can assure you, casual contact with nicotine has no impact on the bite. 8-)
fisin green Posted September 23, 2009 Posted September 23, 2009 I know folks who used to fish the old helicopter bait on the circuit but never admitted it in fact I know one who used to hide them in his pocket lol the rage tail dose the same thing only its marketed better
Uncle Leo Posted September 23, 2009 Posted September 23, 2009 Tennessee bronzebacks have a strong preference for smokes with their beer and whiskey! I can assure you, casual contact with nicotine has no impact on the bite. 8-) That there my friend is over the top. On a serious note I do love the smell of the coffee scented plastics, quite refined.
