Backlash On Berkley Vanish Fluorocarbon Line

Today I put on the Vanish Fluorocarbon line and thought i had made a great choice, then i got to the water and made my first cast and kept my thumb on the line, when i look at the line, it's mildly backlashed. So i begin to pull the line out and i notice that as i go deeper, the backlash and loose line gets worse. I had to pull all the line off and reel it back in. Next cast i made sure that my thumb was tight on the line, but it did the same thing, so i cut it all off. Can someone tell me what the problem is? I have a Quantum Smoke baitcasting reel/rod.

Move to the Rods/Reels/Line forum and read the pinned thread on how to properly adjust/setup a baitcaster. Your thumb is the best control for spool rotation but the systems employed in your Smoke can really help if you set it up right. I don't like to bad mouth any product but Vanish and Transition are not a line I will ever purchase or use again. Poor casting characteristics, too stiff and they did not hold up for nothing. The most disappointing lines I have used to date. Remember, the line must come off the spool at the same rate as the spool rotation. If the spool rotates faster than the line come off, it has no where to go but in the housing. Result, back-lash. Try some YoZuri Hybrid or similar line. Great casting line and it holds up exceptionally well. WELCOME to the forum.

IMO, Berkley Vanish is a bad line. I'd suggest switching to another brand. If you're a Berkley line fan, I'd suggest switching to the 100% fluro they offer instead. My personal favorite is Bass Pro's.

I have had bad luck with vanish. Always getting loose on the spool.

Try a different line, it might have been the problem.

Sounds like you need more practice with a baitcaster...or ithe reel is not set up right.

The iine is not the issue in this case, it is a user problem, most likely.

How long have you been baitcasting ?

Also had trouble with vanish... Went to berkley 100%, also invizx, and suffix. Have had great luck with all.

I think it is a characteristic of flourocarbon lines but of course some can be better than others. I use Viscous flourocarbon and it is definitely a different animal than monfilament to cast but the feel it gives me contacting the bottom and detecting a strike make up for it.

Floro gets stiff in colder weather and if it sits on a spool for awhile it can develop a lot memory. If you're just learning how to fish a baitcaster I'd suggest getting a line that is easy to manage and cheap, like orginal Stren or Trilene XL. Learn how to set your reel right and then it's a matter of practicing and learning how to feel the spool on the cast and feel for a backlash starting. Once you get the hang of it your thumb will control the spool without you even noticing it's doing it.

Each baitcasting reel has it's own characteristics.

That particular reel, when in free-spool is a very 'loose' reel , meaning line can really fly off of it quickly, and if not experienced with that specfic reel,, it can mean an absolute birdnest city.

Most likely, the line was not spooled correctly [too loose on the spool initially], and that means disaster[especilally wiith flouro], simple as that, especially if it is set up with little resisitance with the reel adjustments.

My suggestion ; spool again keeping tension on the line as it gets spooled. Then, back off slightly more line than a full cast of line from the reel, then use electrical tape and use a few windings of that around the line, then respool the line that was peeled out.

Now re-set the adjustments on the reel slightly tighter...and give it another go.

With that tape in place, the line issues will not go deep into the spool if you eff up again.

if its your first time using floro,its definately different from regular mono.Also you picked the worse floro i have ever used in my oppinion.I took it off after one day.Went to 100% berkley trilene and never looked back

Vanish is bad, but not that bad in my experience. Get some trilene 100% or any of the seagaur flourocarbon(just some "cheap" flouro's that have positive reviews) and see how they work for you. If the problem presist, change the adjustments on the reel and take time to learn how to cast with the new flouro.

I've been using Vanish for the better part of 8 seasons on several spinning rigs and one bait caster. Never had an issue. I would think that this cold weather is not helping your problem any. Switch to an XT mono until you get the hang of it. I wouldn't condemn the line right off.

Best advice is to never buy any Berkley line unless it has the Trilene name on it also.

Many like to jump on Vanish line and blame it for everything. Your problem sounds like reel set up to me. Anytime you change line type or size you need to readjust your reel....................Al
