Bass-minded Posted February 25, 2012 Posted February 25, 2012 Is it possible to catch that 30 lb. carp in my friend's pond and safely land it on ultra-light spincasting tackle? If so, how? Quote
Super User Marty Posted February 26, 2012 Super User Posted February 26, 2012 Yes it's possible. You'd need line without nicks, frays or any other weaknesses, a sound knot, a properly set drag and open water in which the fish can make long runs and there are no objects which the line could rub against. And, of course, a certain level of fish-fighting skills. I came very close to catching such a fish on 4# line, but after a series of long runs when it was within six feet of me (I was on shore) the line rubbed against a rock and that was it. Quote
CrankinCarlos Posted February 26, 2012 Posted February 26, 2012 I have caught carp on ultralight setups, shakespeare retractable rod w/ 4lb flouro. They were nowhere near 30lbs though, closer 10lb. Definitely need drag setup right like Marty said. I recommend a long handle net, near shore ( I'm a shore fisher) is where they were at most risk of breaking off for me. Quote
Bass-minded Posted February 26, 2012 Author Posted February 26, 2012 What would y'all recommend as a good drag setup? Quote
telmomarques Posted February 26, 2012 Posted February 26, 2012 i have caught 25 lbs carp on 4 lb line, i used mitchell avocet 500ul with 5 foot light rod, it took me 15-25 mins to land it in Quote
Super User Marty Posted February 27, 2012 Super User Posted February 27, 2012 What would y'all recommend as a good drag setup? I can't quantify it. You'd want something heavier than a drag for bass because too light a drag won't tire out a large carp, but you don't want it so heavy as to risk line breakage. The only way I can do it is by feel. Just pulling the line out and adjusting drag until it feels right. Having said that I use 8# mono when targeting carp. Quote
Global Moderator Bluebasser86 Posted February 28, 2012 Global Moderator Posted February 28, 2012 I fought one in that range for over 20 minutes on 3.5lb test before the line touched a tree limb. I was using an ultralight Avid rated for 1-4lb test, I couldn't hardly lift the fish off the bottom. It can be done but along with a lot of skill it's going to take a lot of luck to land a fish that big on ultralight gear. Quote
bocabasser Posted February 28, 2012 Posted February 28, 2012 i love to catch carp on ultra light set ups. i use tiny hooks and i use ficus berries. i only target carp when the berries are dropping and the carp are waiting to gulp them in. it is super fun to catch a 40 pound carp with 6 pound test on ultralight setup. the only thing that sucks is getting those slimy, nasty things off the hook. Bass-minded Posted March 3, 2012 Author Posted March 3, 2012 So to get a little better picture of fighting a carp, how long are their runs, do they jump? Also, one other thing, how long will it take to wear the fish down? Thanks. Quote
Super User Hi Salenity Posted March 3, 2012 Super User Posted March 3, 2012 http://www.bassresource.com/bass-fishing-forums/topic/92107-some-get-away/page__fromsearch__1 As I picked up this guy with the scales it fell off as I almost had the entire weight of the fish in the air. The next time I went to use my scales they were about 8# less than zero and sprung. I am not sure what this girl weighed but I do remember one of the many times I was able to get my hands on it I also had a hand on the line and it made a run and the line immediately burnt / cut my hand luckily the line did not break! Also, one other thing, how long will it take to wear the fish down? Thanks. They are not like a Bass at all. They are capable of making long runs and don't wear out quickly. I'd say they fight more like a catfish.I'd try using 12# Yo-Zuri line, I think it breaks at around 19#. Quote
Bass-minded Posted March 3, 2012 Author Posted March 3, 2012 Should I use a type of super line? Quote
Super User Hi Salenity Posted March 3, 2012 Super User Posted March 3, 2012 Yea a 50# would be good but that's not ultra lite Quote
Bass-minded Posted March 3, 2012 Author Posted March 3, 2012 I've got 50#. But I was thinking of like a 10#. Quote
Super User Hi Salenity Posted March 3, 2012 Super User Posted March 3, 2012 Do you have any 20? Quote
Bass-minded Posted March 4, 2012 Author Posted March 4, 2012 Roughly, what does 20 equal in mono? Quote
Fish Chris Posted March 9, 2012 Posted March 9, 2012 If the pond has a 30 lb Carp in it, then it's possible But people often "talk" about 30 lb Carp, the way they do about 3lb Sunfish, and 15lb Bass Personally, I've caught about 8 Carp over 23 lbs.... the biggest was 23.8 ! (I call it my 23 lb jinx but pretty much all of my big Carp are caught on micro-light gear. Come to think about, so have all of my latest 100 lb+ Sturgeon I LOVE micro-light fishing Fear no fish, Fish Quote
Bass-minded Posted May 30, 2012 Author Posted May 30, 2012 YAHOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I CAUGHT ONE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!.......25LBS. Quote
Super User tomustang Posted May 30, 2012 Super User Posted May 30, 2012 But people often "talk" about 30 lb Carp, the way they do about 3lb Sunfish, and 15lb Bass Depends on the location, there's plenty of 30lb+ carp by me, perfect conditions with a canal for them to grow, super smart too. Quote
