Deep Crank Bait Questions

When fishing one of these large crank baits what size line do you use?

6XD.

Best all-around deep crank.

I use 10lb copoly or fluoro.

Got to have both. These are #1 and #2 on my list when I need to really get down, but it switches which one is 1 and which one is 2 depending on what the fish want.

I'll take any education you care to throw down. I have never thrown these big deep divers before but have gone in all the way to learn deep cranking this year and plan on putting in some serious time learning what works.

I'm armed with a pair of hummingbird sonars, 898 SI/DI on the back and 798DI up front networked to share waypoints. Picked up B&R graphite crankin sticks in 7'6" and 8' and a mess of Norman and SK divers. I haven't made it out on the water yet to really check out either yet and would gladly take any advice. Picked up a navionics chip at bps last night, ready to start planning some waypoints on breaks and get out there to find some deep cover.

I find the DD-22 displaces more water, has a more "erratic" wobble frequency and pattern, and doesn't dive hardly as deep as the 6XD. All these factors, along with the large profile, tell me to throw the bait in the summer looking for a big bite. Or in dirty water. Basically, I throw the DD-22 if my target structure is huge (like a football field) and the fish are spread out. The fish feel and "hear" it coming and they will seek it out. The XD really takes the more finicky fish, so If I KNOW where my spot is, and I want to catch numbers off that spot, I will throw the XD. MHO.

I prefer the Fat Free Shads, luhr jensen hot lips, and Fat Free Shad juniors for really deep running cranks. I use 10 pound mono because I also use my crank rod for lighter topwaters. Fluoro would get a little extra depth though. In that case, I would go with P - Line 100% fluoro.

6xd for me. Why? IDK...................probably because I caught fish on them, and they are available. If I carried all the baits under the sun and tried to figure out why and or how a DD22, or a Dt 16, or a FFS....or insert deep diving bait here ____________ would catch an extra fish or two, when the others didn't, I would be broke, and more importantly be mentaly paralized by trying to figure it out. When they are not biting a big bodied deep crank like the 6xd, I have found that switching to another bait of the same type is pointless, but if it makes you feel better, and smarter than the rest of us, than go for it. . Your better off changing presentations (if you know there are fish in that location) than changing to differant brand of the same style bait.

While I own both, the finish, hooks, and out of the box consistency of the DD22 have made them my first choice. If you are seriously looking into deep divers there are other baits that work well also.

You may want to look at the SPRO Little John DD, and one that is becoming my favorite, the Poes Cedar 1200 series.

If the 6XD and DD22 are designed for entirely different situations, I would like to be educated as well.
