I really want to see Abu Garcia come out with a Revo Premier in 5.4:1. I know they have the Winch, but I want a Lightweight option. Any others feel the same?

I may be wrong, but those slower gears are bigger and therefore heavier. It would be lighter than the winch, but not by much.

I had an old pflueger and tore it apart just to experiment on. I started boring out equally placed holes in the gear washer (not the teeth of course). I also tried this in the handle shaft, and got happy and started in on the frame lol. I now have the lightest pflueger purist ever! lol it looks like crap. And with all the holes in the frame it would probably have to be re-oiled every trip. I imagine some structural issues would arise due to all that, but the reel does work and I really can't see that too much can be damaged by holes in the gear. (several reels do this anyway)

They are smaller, but made of brass and much heavier than the aircraft aluminum stock gears. It would be easier to just get a winch.

Actually, the main gear in a 5:1 is smaller. It acts as the front sprocket would on a bike. The pinion gear is a 1:1 with the spool. I believe the winch gears are brass though making them heavier than the alloy I think is in the Premier. At the end of the day I think the result would be less than envisioned.

actually the crankshaft is where most of the weight is. the brass gears only pick up about 1/3 of an ounce. you could probably do a crankshaft swap on a winch and get it down to the low 7oz range.

i know at one time, the winch gearset wouldnt work in a premier. i'm pretty sure the pinion gear was the problem, but abu may have changed the winch over to the shorter spool shaft like the premier now.

If you need a heavy duty, light weight reel in a 5 something to one ratio, you've got several options.

Shimano makes a Calais in a 5-1 version. I've got a couple - they work great. You can get a Curado in 5 - 1 ration. I've got a few, they work great. If you can deal with one that weighs a little bit more, you can get a Calcutta or a Calcutta TEGT i a 5-1 gear ratio. They work great and they will last forever.

Just sayin, you don't have to stick with the Revo label.

I'd take jason's advice and look into the new carbonlite. I couldnt throw anything much lighter than 3/8 on the winch. Throwing a bandit 100 was pitiful. Hooligan claims he can throw 1/4oz cranks into orbit on the new CL.

The reason the pinion doesn't work from the winch to the premier is the premier has infini spool II. There is a gearset for the rh STX that should fit the premier. If you need the part number? Let me know, I'll dig it up and post it.

You'll have to be more creative if its a lefty! I think you'll need to use the gears from a lh toro in that case. But not confirmed.
