Dennis1022 Posted September 22, 2009 Posted September 22, 2009 My question is that I have fished with spinner baits and buzz baits. But I have never caught a fish on them! My best lure that has produced fish for me was the Mepps Minnow! So what am I doing wrong? I cast them out under handed and side hand and even cast it over with little splash! I have cast them into weeds and falling trees and brush. I moved to the south in NC, and still no luck! I had gotten so upset with myself that I tossed all my spinner bait and buzz baits out in the trash. So now I was thinking I'm not retrieving the lure in a correct speed or not letting the lure go up and down. Is there a nice or good video that I could watch and see what I'm doing wrong? Slip Gun Posted September 22, 2009 Posted September 22, 2009 Ask and ye shall receive http://www.bassresource.com/bass-fishing-videos/spinnerbaits-bass-fishing.html Glenn made this video and trust me he gets your rolling em great, one of our best producing baits. Quote
Super User fishfordollars Posted September 22, 2009 Super User Posted September 22, 2009 You have got to be kidding me. Throw them in the trash!!! A buzzbait is a big bite bait. Last fall I had a 8.19 (2:15pm)and a 10.51(3:50pm) in a tournament on Fork. Long Mike netted both of them. Ask him if they catch fish. Quote
Super User roadwarrior Posted September 22, 2009 Super User Posted September 22, 2009 KVD relies on spinnerbaits year around. He might be on to something. 8-) Quote
ab8aac Posted September 22, 2009 Posted September 22, 2009 Just keep at it you will get the hang of it. I too had trouble with spinnerbaits until I watched the video, and then went out and fished spinnerbaits for 2 days about 8 hours each day. I didn't even take another rod just so I wouldn't be tempted to use something else. I have started bringing my first cast back just under the surface making a wake, then on the second cast counting 1000/1 1000/2 and then start my retrieve trying to maintain that depth and you would believe how many strikes I get on that second cast to the same spot. I also got some lumaflex skirts from IDAHO***ER that I think helped a bunch. Quote
Mottfia Posted September 22, 2009 Posted September 22, 2009 Haha thats the first time I've seen that video. Glenn I've got to say you're camera skills are coming along great. Make the next video about jigs! but back to spinnerbaits. What type of places are you fishing them at. If its a pond then I feel you're pain. I fish spinnerbaits everywhere and the only places that i have to get tricky is in ponds. Fish em early and on low light days for your best luck. I'll throw em all day on stained and muddy water. Not so much on clear cause I swim baits more there. Run that dude into cover and in the face of where you think the fish are. For some reason they can't stand a spinnerbait crashing into objects around them. And buzzbaits. throw them on low light days for best luck...and alittle secret that you should know. they catch big fish anything fish are shallow. good luck Mottfia Quote
steezy Posted September 22, 2009 Posted September 22, 2009 Throw'em in the trash! Are you crazy? Next time send them to me. Spinnerbait is one of my favorites. Shallow areas near cover is almost a guaranteed catch. Buzzbait is hot in the early morning and late evening in shallow water, the dinks will nip at it and the bigger bass with attack it like its their last meal. Quote
Super User senile1 Posted September 22, 2009 Super User Posted September 22, 2009 I have a Spinnerbait tied on one of my rods most of the time. Having said that, it isn't a miracle bait. It has been stated many times on this forum that particular baits are tools and you have to use them in the right time and place. This statement holds true for the spinnerbait. The general situations to use them are in stained water, when the wind creates a chop on the water, and when the fish are at least somewhat active or some combination of these three. I've also noticed that in a highly pressured lake where the spinnerbait is used by many anglers, bites can be difficult to come by at times. Some don't believe it, but I think fish can become conditioned to baits they see all the time. Quote
Dennis1022 Posted September 23, 2009 Author Posted September 23, 2009 I really like to thank you all for the information on the spinner baits. I also liked the video on S/B's as well. Yes I tossed out over twenty spinners and around 10 to 15 Buzz baits! I was getting tired of failure every time! But I have been buying new ones and checking flea markets and yard sales. I will do this and I will conquer my failures. But I have to practice and practice. I haven't fished for several weeks now due to buying a home and packing, also looking at different homes everyday all times of the day! Once again I Thank You All Dennis Quote
Super User iceintheveins Posted September 23, 2009 Super User Posted September 23, 2009 Dang I feel bad for you throwing those lures out. Spinnerbaits work best in certain waters, as do buzzbaits. There are waters they don't work as well in, but they are almost always a lure you need to have in your boat. I carry spinnerbaits year round and buzzbaits anytime the water is over 60 degrees. Generally I find a stop and go retrieve, as slow as possible, works best with a spinnerbait. With buzzbaits, working the lure as slowly as possible while still keeping it gurgling on the surface seems to be the key to me. Some of my biggest bass have come off of buzzbaits. Spinnerbaits might be the most versatile lure around. Quote
